ai has entered its roast era. large scale mockery signals the beginning of the end. good. 🙂

@ElleGray Yup. Even Barron’s is questioning the hype at this point: “Nvidia Was the Stock Market’s Biggest Strength. Now It Could Be Its Biggest Weakness.” https://www.barrons.com/articles/nvidia-stock-biggest-strength-weakness-fc35c9f5

And the last line in the article: “It might not be the robot’s choice, but if the AI trade has run its course, you could do worse than the Dow.”

So I’m trying to write some little static designs with py5 in Thonny, and when I run the program, the sketch window opens but closes immediately, so I can’t really see what I’ve drawn. It only seems to happen when there is no “def draw():” component in the program (so, non-animated programs which only have the “def setup():” part). Is there a setting somewhere to tell Thonny to keep the sketch result open after running?

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

Here’s a screen recording of what I’m seeing

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

@InstantArcade Yeah, I can “fix” it by making it throw an error (I added “time()”, for example, which it didn’t like). But I swear it just used to work - the window would stay open, even without the animation function (empty or otherwise).

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

@InstantArcade Yeah, I’ll probably do that - and thanks for jumping in with the suggestions. It’s just so frustrating when something that was working stops working for reasons you can’t figure out.

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

@InstantArcade Just following up: I did a really thorough uninstall - Thonny and everything - and reinstalled from scratch, and it is indeed working as usual again. Phew.

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

@py5coding Yeah, I did a whole Thonny (and py5 and plugin) uninstall and reinstall - that fixed the issue.

@MLE_online My favorites are the ones who duck but walk through anyway, which is worse (from a filmmaking standpoint) because you could potentially use a shot with a rando walking normally through it, but not when they’re ducking to “miss” the camera.

Fed up with #macOS' #Spotlight. No fuzzyfinder, in 2024; no real drilldown; the way it organizes/sorts results are unintuitive. I shouldn't have to remember what /format/ a document is to go "oh right I oughtta scroll down a bunch to see PDFs” 😩

What's good for alternative launcher/finder tools these days? AFAIK, it's still down to the same candidates from ~10ya, ie #Alfred, #Quicksilver, #Launchbar? (EDIT: Raycast enters the chat! Tho its AI focus is worrying.)

See poll!

mitten,

@bitprophet Definitely Raycast! @robb wrote a few blog posts about switching from Alfred to Raycast; they might give you some ideas. https://rknight.me/blog/trying-raycast-part-one/ and https://rknight.me/blog/trying-raycast-part-two/ and https://rknight.me/blog/raycast-follow-up/

mitten,

@ViennaMike Yes, it was in a Lightning talk. But yeah, honestly I was expecting to see a bit more here, too. MicroPython and CircuitPython were (are?) my entry points for Python. But whatevs - it’s all good and I’ve learned some cool Python image making stuff so far, so I’m happy. #PyConUS #PyCon

#PyConUS tip: apparently to register and get your badge, you CANNOT go straight from the Westin skybridge to the CC third floor (security will stop you at the third floor elevator if you're not badged).

Gotta enter from street level and make your way up to the second floor via escalator.

@bitprophet I tried going back to the hotel that way - it was weird and involved a ride in a parking garage elevator.

I'm pleased to report that my #py5 #pycon proposal has moved from "standby" to "scheduled" for Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at 4:15 p.m. The opportunity to present py5 at PyCon is a dream come true!

https://us.pycon.org/2024/schedule/presentation/167/

This, in addition to @villares 's py5 tutorial on Thursday the 16th:

https://us.pycon.org/2024/schedule/presentation/116/

If you will be at PyCon in Pittsburgh later this month, please come see both of us talk about the amazing things you can do with py5!

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

@py5coding @villares I’m excited about your talk, though kinda bummed that it’s at the same time as the Weaving Algorithms talk - would love to hear both! Not sure why they scheduled two “creative” talks in the same time slot. #PyCon2024

I guess Tuesday afternoon is a good a time as any to announce that I’ve built a blog: https://mitten.lol I used @eleventy, and it’s mostly gone okay. There’s some learning curve there. And I still have no clue how to automate a regular posting workflow. Right now, I write a post, I build locally, I use ftp to upload it to my webhost. That seems automate-able, but all I can find is posts/tutorials that say “use Netlify!” (1/2)

mitten,
@mitten@social.lol avatar

@MoritzGiessmann When I was asking for help, @bobmonsour linked to this page https://11tybundle.dev/categories/deployment/ , which links to your post. Like I said earlier, I needed a few pointers from my host for particulars, but I essentially set it up like you have it. Thanks!
