Instagram is testing ‘unskippable’ ads that you can’t scroll past https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/3/24170682/instagram-unskippable-ads-test

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@verge If the Ad makers hadn’t made their ads so obnoxious and annoying over the years, perhaps people wouldn’t have chosen to block them as much. I started blocking ads in web pages when the ads made the pages unusable / unreadable. Further enshittification of these services with ads will not make people any happier and they may just simply choose not to use the platforms at all! 🤷‍♂️

iOS and iPadOS 17.5.1 fix a nasty bug that resurfaced old photos

Bug was discovered by Redditors and forum users a few days ago.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/ios-and-ipados-17-5-1-fix-a-nasty-bug-that-resurfaced-old-photos/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica Apple should be fully transparent about the cause and resolution of this bug. If the photos were actually deleted they wouldn’t be able to suddenly come back into existence, so this suggests that the “deleted” photos were not actually deleted, just flagged as deleted… if that’s the case this could be a massive privacy issue!

How long before we start trying to cram an LLM into a space probe to act as a potential interactive digital ambassador containing the wealth of human knowledge? A time capsule that could encapsulate and preserve our culture, languages, history for thousands of years, fired into the cosmos. It is almost certainly going to happen

If Apple's afraid of eating into Mac sales by putting macOS on iPad, just put the Hypervisor and Virtualization frameworks on iPadOS so third parties like Parallels can virtualize Windows 11 or Linux instead. Windows, at least, is much better suited for a touchscreen than macOS is. Let the developer/userbase validate the concept if you won’t — is a virtual desktop good or bad for the iPad platform?

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Government legislation may need to force Apple’s hand on making iPad Pro support VMs if Apple is unwilling to allow it. This would bring more competition to the platform. I suspect a major reason Apple still hasn’t allowed VMs is that doing so could threaten to reduce Apple’s services profits.

I know people like to think iPadOS 'forked' from iOS when it was renamed a few years back, but it really didn’t. If you install Xcode, both iPhone and iPad simulators run out of the exact same OS root. It's the same set of apps, the same SpringBoard — it just decides which features you get at runtime based on screen size and a feature map. That's not a fork; the name essentially means nothing. A brand new $4,000 iPad runs the same OS as your six year old phone

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith As I suspected… and why iPadOS still sux!

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Assuming this is made possible by running macOS apps in virtualisation. Would you rather macOS ran in full screen on iPad and the Mac apps can only be used while the full macOS desktop is displayed, or the macOS apps run in their own windows alongside other iPadOS apps (like parallels coherence mode)?

The only reason the #Audible app has a high rating in the #AppStore is because of people who review the audio books instead of the actual app. 🙄🤷‍♂️ If people actually reviewed the app as they should be, the rating would be far lower as the app has a lot of performance problems and is prone to crashing! It’s annoying how little effort and resources #Amazon is putting into this app on iOS, does it run any better on #Android?

Shame #Apple doesn’t currently have an #audiobooks subscription service.

Almost got scammed selling some stuff online. 🤙

Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.

I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lol

If you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.

I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.

I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...", and even I set myself up for it.

So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution. Also, it's usually pretty shady if a stranger you're already chatting with wants to move to a new platform. Not always, but if someone emails or messages you on Facebook to ask you to text them, that's a little weird. I'd had legitimate buyers/sellers do that, so it's not unheard of, but it should put you on guard.

If you buy/sell/trade online frequently, it's a good idea to use a dedicated MySudo number, VOIP number, and/or a burner phone for that.

Stay safe out there, kids.

@JustinDerrick @ADHDefy Now there are deep fake AI scammers who record people’s voices when they answer scam calls so that they can then synthesise your voice and call other people you know using your voice to try and scam them. So it’s not recommended to engage with scammers at all anymore, don’t answer calls from contacts you don’t know or hang up immediately as soon as it starts to feel like a scam call. My voicemail message is spoken by Siri 😎
