Pitch: Google Reader over ActivityPub

tylrfishr,
@tylrfishr@social.tylerjfisher.com avatar

@ben Oh really? I know they're federating the work people publish, but are they building a feed reader? I had interpreted their announcement as them taking the same approach as WordPress.

@ben Ohhhhh, cool!

I’m wondering if the Automattic AI training deal also applies to WordPress VIP?

tylrfishr,
@tylrfishr@social.tylerjfisher.com avatar

@ben i am, uh, concerned!

Microsoft is sponsoring a bunch of AI initiatives for newsrooms. What do we think?

tylrfishr,
@tylrfishr@social.tylerjfisher.com avatar

@ben It's not quite a trap but the incentives don't align!

A fun exercise for newsrooms would be to go look up what the people exhorting them to embrace LLMs had to say about Facebook’s Instant Articles and pivot to video debacles at the time. And calibrate accordingly.

@tylrfishr@social.tylerjfisher.com avatar

@kissane It's actually very easy.

@tylrfishr@social.tylerjfisher.com avatar

@kissane There was a section I cut for length from the thing I wrote today that brought the receipts, almost entirely from Nieman Lab predictions. Maybe it should be its own thing.

@kissane I'd definitely rather be nice but Jimmy fucking Finkelstein is still out here.

A journalism industry that moves away from people and connection, towards automation and anonymity, is one that can't bridge the trust gap.

I've been mad about the journalism industry's response to AI for a while, so I wrote about it. We need to recenter the practice of technology in journalism on helping people find information and solve problems. https://www.tylerjfisher.com/blog/post/2024/02/01/anti-scale-a-response-to-ai-in-journalism

I tried Arc Search and hated it. A world where everyone uses apps like this is a death spiral to an information desert. https://werd.io/2024/stripping-the-web-of-its-humanity

@ben I did the same search for myself and it autocorrected to Tyler Fischer (who is an awful right-wing comedian). No way, as far as I can tell, to say "no, I meant Fisher". Love the future where I'm invisible!

@ben Put it in quotes and it conflates at least 4 different people.

@ben That guy is on the Ben Shapiro track and if he gets any bigger I might seriously have to consider a name change, especially in this reality where I can't trust that anyone can disambiguate me from a transphobe with a similar name.

I posted this at work and a bunch of staffers changed their email habits because of it. So, my three golden rules of email (with much due credit to Merlin Mann):

  1. At some point you have to declare bankruptcy. Just archive everything to start. Anything important will come back to you in the form of a follow-up.
  2. If it's archived, you can search for it whenever you want. I archive everything indiscriminately. Don't think, just archive.
  3. Unsubscribe religiously. I don't need the ad.

I don't always go for Doctorow but when he's right he's right. https://locusmag.com/2023/12/commentary-cory-doctorow-what-kind-of-bubble-is-ai/
