Two pieces of personal news: first, after 14 years, I've effectively quite my job as a translator. The industry is in the process of collapsing - you know why - and I've been feeling the squeeze for a while now, and I like going out on my own terms. I've known this day would come, and I'm not sad about it. My motto: it is what it is.

Second: I have decided to focus all my work attention on @osnews from here on out. This is risky, scary, and I'm absolutely terrified of what this will mean. Right now, my OSNews income does not even come close to what I earned as a translator, so I've got work ahead of me to increase readership, give y'all more reasons to sign up for our Patreon, and hopefully find sponsors for the site to generate more income. End goal: rely entirely on reader and sponsor support, to remove ads altogether.

If all this fails, I'll have to find another line of work, which would mean the end of OSNews. Not trying to scare you - just being honest.

Anyway, this is a big deal for me - I've only ever been a translator (aside for the one 8-year teenage job I had), and I do not like taking risks.

Anyway, want to become a Patreon? Or a sponsor? Pretty please? 😰

Why hasn't Microsoft unified font rendering on Windows 11 yet? There's tiny weird Win32 fonts, and modern, new fonts, and it clashes all over the place.

Streaming has really made video capture cards expensive, huh.

I just want to record a video of the excellent Dell thin client BIOS.

Greece in a nutshell: 3€ to send a letter, but the postal service doesn't actually deliver mail, not even registered mail. You can pay extra for a PO Box, but it's illegal to use it for official business. They don't do email, of course. Oh, and there's no auto-pay of anything, so you need to go in person to the various offices to ask whether you have a bill due, since they don't deliver mail.

@jbqueru Meanwhile, Sweden: everything is so digital, automated, and modern I have not even seen Swedish paper/coin money since moving here five years ago.

It's wild.

Oh lord the BBC website automatically redirects non-UK visitors to bbc.com now instead of allowing you to go to .co.uk. I see a quick glimpse of the milksake before the redirect happens.

The BBC is so embarrassed of the state of the UK they're like "let's not show them the real BBC news".

Stay classy, OpenAI bots.

This is an absolutely insane request, and I can't believe how many people on Fedi of all places are boosting this.

If you're a journalist or a blogger or whatever and you want to write about this stuff, you don't need fucking permission from anyone to do so. I understand that it might be inconvenient for the project involved, but that's just the reality of developing out in the open.

I am obviously not going to write about this because I don't give a shit, but if you do give a shit... Write about it six ways 'till Sunday and assuming you're not making shit up or lying, don't let anyone attack you for it.

Ukraine apparently on the offensive around Charkiv, gaining ground, with the so-called Russian offensive stalled entirely.

There are no words to describe the heroes that make up the Ukrainian military. They deserve a monument in every capital in the free world.

I'm lying down in front of a tower fan, on the lowest setting, pretending I'm lying next to a private pool in Italy, enjoying a gentle breeze with my eyes closed, holding a fake wodka-martini (I don't drink anymore).

Remarkable how capable the human mind is at convincing myself this is real.

Some Dutch idiot used a waterproof market and scribbled a relatively large "autograph" on a wall in Herculaneum, one of the ancient Roman cities destroyed by the Vesuvian eruption that also destroyed Pompeii.

Thank god the Italian police arrested this waste of genes, and I'm sad to hear fines only go as high as €60k. This should either be a financially ruining fine, or several years of jailtime in Italy, or both. Zero tolerance for fucking idiots destroying irreplicable artefacts.

So it seems Batocera Linux is the best retrogaming Linux distribution? I think turning the thin client into a retrogaming console makes the most sense.

Don't tell journalists or bloggers they can't write about the feature your Linux distribution is working on. Fuck right off with that shit.

I wish I had organisational skills and no crippling anxiety disorder so I could get some people together and organise a retrocomputing event - a sort of VCF Nordic, if you will - perhaps in Stockholm, Gothenburg, or Oslo.

Is tonic - the extremely repulsively bitter, quinine-based soft drink - readily available in your country?

I absolutely adore tonic, and it's my favourite soft drink, but only in summertime. I've often had troubles finding it in other countries - especially during my trips to the US, where it seems impossible to get in restaurants and such.

Can any of you nerds help me get a ThinOS Activation License? ThinOS is Dell's weird version of #FreeBSD.

https://www.osnews.com/story/139840/first-and-possibly-only-look-at-dells-weird-version-of-freebsd-thinos/

thomholwerda, to random

This is what Dell's FreeBSD first-run experience is like. Dell has a product called ThinOS that's FreeBSD with a proprietary GUI on top, used exclusively for some of its thin clients.

I decided to buy one. The installation looks like an automated FreeBSD install, and upon reboot it loads this OOBE.

This is wild.
