It's our 10th birthday today!

To celebrate, throughout the day we'll be picking one of our favourite projects from every year. Lovely looking back and seeing how hard it is to pick, because somehow we enjoyed almost all of them.

A big hat tip due to @FoAM - up to 2021 we were called FoAM Kernow, and it was the fabulous and eclectic FoAM gang that helped us get on our feet and made space for our hopes.

We've been awarded some funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry for Organised Atoms 💎

We'll be giving kids rock hammers and taking them out to smash stuff up at an ex-mining site, with a series of workshops over the summer.

Lots of minerals in Cornwall can be used as semiconductors, so after the smashing-up-phase we'll be putting them into synthesiser circuits to bend sounds.

We're doing this with the fab Rosi Jolly who works with young people and their families in Cornwall.

So if you needed to personalise your Nergal, what would you want to be able to add to it? Ears? Antlers? Some sort of fancy hat? Something else?

thentrythis,

@PaulGrahamRaven what's the best hat tho? we're thinking a little acorn hat maybe

thentrythis,

@PaulGrahamRaven we might be using mushrooms as a disease they catch, not sure yet. Forest floor accessories ftw.

Well this is a thing. Somehow we are turning 10 years old in June?!

Getting ready for a talk and demo for the robotics course at Falmouth Uni tomorrow. We'll be discussing why we build robots and how we do it, including unlikely subjects like virus mutation and weaving.

We've set a creative brief building robots for assisting climate protest: design for inconvenience!

Complicated question.

(in the citizen science epidemiology game we're making this could be used to see if people trust characters more if they look like them...)

thentrythis, to random

More work in progress for our citizen science game 'Nergal', which creates a safe way to do research about human behaviour when confronted with infectious disease.

We've added speech bubbles, and it's suddenly getting loud in here!

The characters have a memory, and share information when they speak - but that isn't obvious yet!

#CitizenScience #Epidemiology

Player character moving around groups of other characters all saying "Hello" and "Nergal!!!" to each other.

Today we are using the https://dynamicland.org "communal computer" to understand Fibonacci patterns underlying wire weaving with Charlotte Megroureche and https://www.geraldinejones.co.uk #alpaca

Learning the mathematics of wire weaving with https://www.geraldinejones.co.uk/ in the studio with @yaxu today

Hello! We've just done our annual review for 2023, including meadows, heritage creative technologies, gut microbes, neolithic weaving, farmyard manure, insect behaviour, noisy mine waste, and some other bits and bobs 💚

It's available as a (slightly chunky) download here: https://thentrythis.org/documents/72/Annual_Review_2023.pdf

If you fancy some complicated patterns and craft/making, talks are now online from the Algorithmic Pattern residents Geraldine Jones and @anu1905

There will be an AccessLab workshop on 8 Dec, online, on a theme of violence and aggression, run by folks at St. Andrews University.

🌟 spaces available 🌟

Learn how scientific research is funded/published, how to access it from outside universities, how to fact-check media stories, and then get half a day one-to-one with an academic to work on whatever question/topic you'd like, with the support of that academic. People usually leave these feeling really empowered!

Almost exclusively now use fonts for projects from this nice compilation of libre-fonts-by-womxn, in case it's useful for anyone else https://www.design-research.be/by-womxn/

Enjoying exploring this Animal Social Network Repository, full of open datasets on different animals' social connections, like this one on how desert tortoises asynchronously share each other's burrows.

Nice article on the festival we're part of this weekend

“I don’t want to talk St Ives down, it’s beautiful and inspires artists but Redruth has a very different feel. I’m not saying it’s New York...”

Dismantling old dead iPhone we bought second hand for app development, and turning it into Petri dishes for people to look at under microscopes. There will be mine waste samples too, containing many of the same minerals.

A field trip, workshop and exhibition by Then Try This, run with Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change, where we play with simple electronics to listen to the crystal structures of Cornish minerals.

Our smartphones and computers work because of semiconducting minerals, we will dismantle the myths of AI and cyberspace and show how our digital world is fully grounded in materials such as galena, quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, cassiterite and gold.

🌟 Algorithmic Pattern resident announcement 🌟

We had a whopping 167 applications for this residency, which was a bit of a shock! In the end we were lucky to be able to pick two fab residents.

First up is Anuradha Reddy @anu1905

During this residency, Anuradha will continue her exploration into Kambi Kolam patterns (Kambi - continuous line shapes) through drawing, computation, and embroidery. She will also hold a public workshop to demystify Kolams through code.

thentrythis,

Our second Algorithmic Pattern resident is Geraldine Jones.

Geraldine trained as a basket maker and will be developing ideas connecting cellular growth with spiral formations, studying algorithmic patterning in relation to the natural formation, by a mollusc, of its shell. On the practical side, Geraldine will be weaving algorithmic patterns in stainless steel wire rope combining a basketry technique known as Cycloid Weaving with systems that she has developed.

Listening to electrons spilling through semiconducting junctions in this galena from at Wheal Lovelace, .

The crystal is being used by one oscillator to modulate the frequency of another. With this simple setup you can experience the highly complex interactions between electrons and crystals grown hundreds of millions of years ago.

Part of Organised Atoms, a project funded by Flamm Cornwall and being run with Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change

Frequency plot of strange audio signals coming from galena used as a transistor to modulate the frequency of one oscillator with the output of another.

Prototype synth for experimenting with different semiconducting crystals in our upcoming workshop for Flamm Cornwall in Redruth.

Just a nudge for applications for our funded Algorithmic Pattern residencies - deadline 31 August.

Sheffield/Cornwall/remote, £250/day fee for 5-10 working days, travel (over land only, no flights, there's a bit of a climate crisis you might have heard) and accommodation covered too.
