technocrit,

The dark side of piracy is capitalism violently enforced by the state.

Top EU Court Says There’s No Right To Online Anonymity, Because Copyright Is More Important (www.techdirt.com)

This is a good example of how copyright’s continuing obsession with ownership and control of digital material is warping the entire legal system in the EU. What was supposed to be simply a fair way of rewarding creators has resulted in a monstrous system of routine government surveillance carried out on hundreds of millions of...

technocrit,

The purpose of the state is serving capital, not people.

technocrit, (edited )

100%. I came here to say the same thing. The vibe at ycomb is like condescending fascism. I’ve been banned many times. Lemmy is a vast improvement for tech news/info.

Not to mention cultish stuff like “slate star codex”, etc.

For just a little balance that the BBC does not and will not provide:

Why would anybody trust propaganda against software that exposes genocide, when the propagandist is a direct mouthpiece of a state supporting that genocide?

technocrit, (edited )

This is a bizarrely careless realistic attitude for a politics student to have towards elections in their own country.

Why hold software to a higher standard than the people who violently control us? It’s because politicians inherently support hegemony while software is infuriatingly beyond their control.

technocrit,

It’s an exciting change from legacy media sharing old fashioned, entirely false news.

NewsBreak: Most downloaded US news app has Chinese roots and 'writes fiction' using AI (www.reuters.com)

Last Christmas Eve, NewsBreak, a free app with roots in China that is the most downloaded news app in the United States, published an alarming piece about a small town shooting. It was headlined “Christmas Day Tragedy Strikes Bridgeton, New Jersey Amid Rising Gun Violence in Small Towns.”...

technocrit,

Wew at least the app wasn’t corrupting the youth by revealing an ongoing genocide.

Solar project to destroy thousands of Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert… So Rich People Can Continue Privileged, Unsustainable Lifestyle

technocrit, (edited )

Maybe people are just less interested in accusations against a state on the other side of the planet and much more interested in the open, horrifying and costly crimes committed by their “own”.

edit: Also nobody in the USA is advocating for the oppression of the uyghurs so there’s not much to protest here. The situation is almost completely reversed with respect to palestine.

technocrit, (edited )

This happens all the time on social media. I start following some “leftist” account. It seems ok. Eventually they start with the stalin, vanguard, promotion of fascist invasions, etc.

Once I was told I have “oppositional defiant disorder” for being anti-authoritarian. It’s wild how red fash share the same techniques as classic fascism.

technocrit,

Wow EU and USA getting the same treatment that they’ve been dishing out for centuries?!? So sad.

So make the internet into a state service for ISPs? It might not be worse but it could be much better.

Imagine if they did this for water pipes.

The U.S. needs to move fast

Ha. Who would have thought that an industry promotion magazine would promote more industry?

They been moving fast for decades. That’s how this problem was created. Space capitalism. They’ve trashed both earth and space. They’ve got billions for spacemen while the planet burns.

Instagram's unskippable ads test causes outrage among users (www.techspot.com)

Instagram has long been accused of stealing features from platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter/X. It appears that the company has looked to YouTube for its latest idea: unskippable ads that you have to watch for a period of time before being able to scroll further....

technocrit,

People need to stop banning alternatives.

Talking Tiananmen with a Chinese chatbot: Chinese developers hope to build the AI of the future. What, if anything, will it have to say about the past? (chinamediaproject.org)

As China strives to surpass the United States with cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence, the leadership is keen to ensure technologies reach the public with the right political blind spots pre-engineered. Can Chinese AI hold its tongue on the issues most sensitive to the Chinese Communist Party?...

technocrit, (edited )

The crazy thing about USA is that nobody knows any counter-narratives to ask about. Sinophobes are always droning about Tianamen decades ago like this is unique to China. But they never ask about white supremacist equivalents. For example, what does chatGPT think about the genocidal massacre known as the “gulf war”? Chelsea Manning? Assange? This is just one invasion as an example. Most likely ChatGPT will just average the perspective from capitalist media. Maybe talk about some mainstream, pointless protests. People are so inured to the hegemonic narrative that they don’t understand the alternatives.

technocrit,

The existing capitalist control of tech is bad.

technocrit,

The point is to save car dependency, not the planet.

technocrit, (edited )

State monitors and censors don’t make anybody safe. It’s just about maintaining their violent control. #freepalestine

Garageband. Sadly it’s my favorite DAW. I’ve tried many alternatives.

technocrit,

I use Kdenlive for video editing. It’s been awesome for my purposes.
