It is weird to think of Sam Rockwell winning an Oscar before Robert Downey, Jr. At least that field is about to be leveled.

These nominee honors feel far less personal than the supporting actress honors, except for Rockwell and RDJ. #oscars2024

@amaditalks Ali did a good job in a challenging sitch there, I though.

@amaditalks I just meant I didn’t think he had a lot to work with there. Does he know Ruffalo? Has he ever worked with him?

OK, my next #MasterRecycling colleague … is a white guy … who decided … not to make a presentation but to tell us things about Gone with the Wind and upcycling. At least he practiced and timed himself so he knew his 2-3 minute presentation was actually 19 minutes. (He just said he cut a few things out.)

Useful thread on the fediverse spam wave.

I’ve been getting gobs, more every time I open the app, but apparently most people aren’t getting any, so it’s another unevenly distributed thing. Also it’s allegedly not expected to stop, so I guess I can ignore it or leave. 🤷🏻

Finished The Liberators today, a fast but deep read. The poetry, the intensity, the history, the dreaming of a different ending for divided Korea, and just - the beauty, the beauty of the language. Gorgeous. If you need a literary read, may I suggest The Liberators by E.J. Koh. @bookstodon

Just finished Nick Fuller Googins's The Great Transition, in my quest to read @tithenai and @charliejane's top 10 books of 2023.

I don't think I've ever cried so much in anger, grief, and hope while reading a book of science fiction. My goodness. His debut!! Incredible. https://chireviewofbooks.com/2023/08/22/a-hopeful-climate-change-novel-an-interview-with-nick-fuller-googins/

I think that NPR thinks this headline is clever, but what it says to me is, "We have LITERALLY NO IDEA what life is like if it's not on a coast." Yes, I live on one of the coasts, but I'm from the Midwest, and just fuck this headline and this entire way of thinking. "of all places" are you kidding me?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Sigh. https://www.npr.org/2024/01/21/1225888886/one-of-the-worlds-greatest-instrument-collections-is-in-south-dakota-of-all-plac

Newest news site game addiction is New Yorker's "Name Drop," where you're supposed to guess a person through six clues - the sooner you guess, the more "points" (for??) you get. I dead-ass knew two: "In 2021, I became co-owner of the North Carolina Courage of the National Women's Soccer League," and "adrienne maree brown and Toshi Reagon host a podcast about me, and Reagon and her mother, Sweet Honey in the Rock's Berenice Johnson Reagon, composed an opera using two of my books."

Several years ago, a certain writer would have made the Hugo ballot save for a tabulating error which failed to combine a nominated work submitted in two different ways. I felt so bad I gave away one of my four Hugo pins to cheer them. This latest mess has me feeling I should dig out the other three and do it again.

So, Eugene. #AmericanFiction doesn't open here until next Thursday and I'm debating just getting a ticket now. Hmmmm. (Also, if you watched Rustin and saw Jeffrey Wright as Adam Clayton Powell, as I did, it's going to be so interesting to see him in AF.) (I hope!) I have loved Cord Jefferson's work on just about everything for YEARS, so I'm excited to see his first big movie. (I hope first of many!)

suzisteffen,
@suzisteffen@wandering.shop avatar

@LinuxAndYarn Thanks! I feel sure I've seen him in many other things! I am iffy on Wes A but will watch French Dispatch. Angels in America ... I had to leave a theatre once because I was crying so hard I thought I might throw up. Thus I haven't watched it on screen yet. I did see Boycott. I was just thinking about the variety of actors who've played Dr. MLK Jr. in the past decade (uh, that is ... two decades) while watching #Rustin. I thought Wright was superb as power broker Powell.

suzisteffen,
@suzisteffen@wandering.shop avatar

@LinuxAndYarn YES, was just thinking about Glynn Turman as Randolph. Superb. Also thought Audra McDonald and CCH Pounder did their best with the little there was to work with. CAN WE PLEASE GET AN ELLA BAKER SERIES (& if it stars McDonald, that's all right with me!). Even a series focused on Civil Rights women or something. (That's not a doco.) SOMETHING.

There's only one overlap! My Libby is FULL of books from these lists. Well, my holds list is full, anyway. (One of my libraries in the Midwest is the most likely to have genre books - Eugene is ... ahem ... snottier.) (& Queens lines are LONG) #AmReading
