spacewizard, to archlinux
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

I've been using #archlinux as a laptop OS lately, because just about any odd little tool or utility I want to try out, a recent version is usually packaged for arch.

Also I am using linux lately not just as a means but as an end - I'd rather it be fiddly than boring. (If I was using it only as a means to get other more important stuff done, boring/stable/just-works would be the priority, and arch wouldn't be optimal.)

Then we need a tiddler which shows you a list of tiddlers which have a "todo" but not "done" tag, maybe organized by project.

Maybe another one for the "dones"

Then we'd like some affordance that adds/removes "dones."

Wait, I'm describing my bookmarker, more or less

(that's all if we forget about dates for the moment, date fields would add an extra layer of complexity)

spacewizard,

(learning how to code TiddlyWiki stuff is... kind of a pain. You know how in Perl there's a lot of weirdness because it's a very old language with 100% backward compatibility, so all the old awkward weird ways of doing things are still supported, used in some parts of existing code, and present in tutorial material you find about it on the net? It's JUST LIKE THAT)

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

Tiddlywikis are mostly coded in Tiddlywiki itself... which is effectively a functional language which exists as special widgets which look like HTML tags.... with a layer of somewhat more accessible WikiText and/or macros over top of some of that.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

oh and "filters" are their own micro-language

oh god why am I recommending this

@mph figured it out!

@mph backticks are the trick

That backtick shit is new as of last year; it's nice

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph dang! You should be able to upgrade it in place though I think?

#Selfhosting just kind of fell apart for me :(

To make https work I was accessing my home server, from home, using its external ip address. I had Caddy taking care of TLS.

As of this morning that doesn't work anymore. I can't reach my home server FROM HOME via its own external IP address anymore.

I was really really counting on doing that to make a lot of things work.

I can confirm it's still reachable from outside (e.g. via vpn) just not from inside my house. Where I always am.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

It is still so weird to me that all of a sudden, bam, xfinity will not let me reach my external ip from inside my lan anymore.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph tailscale is for when you're away from home, no?

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph I don't know what that means, that it works great internally... what does it accomplish to have a VPN that is inside your LAN? You're already on an actual private network, why do you need a virtual private network?

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph interesting! But you've always got to be on the vpn then eh? Seems odd but ok. What if you want to give one machine several names, one for each service, so caddy can reverse proxy based on what name it's reached by?

(I imagine it wouldn't change anything about local ssl certs being a minor pain....)

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph Can you tell Tailscale that a given machine should be accessible by more than one name?

@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

So @mph I promised you a rabbithole.

I was looking at tai chi places in GR. There aren't that many, it turns out. One of them seems nice, chill, it's run by a woman who's been doing tai chi a long time. There are some oddities on her site like she calls it "Tai Chi Gung" which sounds like a mashup of "Tai Chi" (taiji) and "Chi Kung" (qigong)? But the "chi" in "tai chi" is a completely different word than the "chi" in "chi kung", it's actually "ch'i". So that's a little odd, but not that odd...

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph I'm looking for places along with a friend who's also thinking of joining, and she's like "if the place is good a little eye rolling about the person's beliefs isn't that big a deal" and I was like "that's right, I'll look into it a little more, might be worth checking out."

I follow some links on the web site, read about the teachers this woman has had, and hear that her current teacher, to whom she links on her website, is called "Master Lama Rasaji" and heads the "Circle of Chi"

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph "Huh," I think. "Lama Rasaji doesn't sound Chinese, it sounds vaguely Indian." She links to his web site. He appears to be a bald white guy with a long beard and a beatific smile, wearing a thin white kung fu/tai chi type uniform.

Here we learn that the "lama" part really means "Lama".

We learn that he is one of only twelve "Master Lamas" on the planet, taught at the Lamasery founded by Lau Tzu (didn't you know he founded a Lamasery in Tibet)?

I don't know who the other 11 are.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph He is supposed to have learned the 3000 year old art of Tai Chi passed down from Lao Tzu. (Tai Chi is not from Tibet and is, at most, several hundred years old.)

The GR woo lady linked to the page where he gives daily talks on different subjects. That day's talk is about the Secret Teachings of Enoch. In a jarringly strong Southern accent.

I'm like, this is, best case, a spiritual grifter and bullshit artist, worst case, this is a straight up cult.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph But I was still not prepared for...

The Patriot and the Lama Show

@mph

Master Lama Rasaji (The Lama)

Master Lama Rasaji (co-founder of Circle of Life) is one of only 12 Master Lamas in the entire World. He lived and trained at the original Tai Chi Gung lamasery in Tibet.

This is the school that Lao Tzu opened when he left China more than 3000 years ago.

Master Lama Rasaji has been training in Lao Tzu’s regenerative health system for more than 50 years.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph

(continued)

He has been sharing the system for more than 40 years. The teachings of Lao Tzu are based on the Siddhi Yoga Master lineage, going back more than 10,000 years.

The power and purity of this extraordinary unbroken lineage are spoken best by those who have practiced it and studied directly with this profound Master of the art.

Now They Have Joined Forces To Create "The Patriot & Lama Show"!

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph The web site it's on looks exactly like you'd expect

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph I haven't actually dug into the videos but it mixes a lot of new age spiritual stuff with vaguely Christian stuff about prophecy and prayer and "the armor or God" and kinda prosperity gospel-ish stuff, it looks like a lot of pretty standard "conspirituality grifter" stuff.

Anyway that was where I ended up, and that was a hell of a ride from where I started on my survey of tai chi studios.

spacewizard,
@spacewizard@mas.to avatar

@mph (Why am I looking at other studios when I learned for a long time at a really great and grounded studio? Long story, it's complicated, it's not them it's me)
