Having read and watched through all the iPad coverage, it really seems like a lot of people are aligned on the top items where iPad falls down

• The Files app infrastructure
• The too-restrictive audio system
• Background processing
• Multiple user support

"Just put macOS on it” is the fallback for most criticism, because it's hard to articulate just why iPadOS doesn’t cut it. And the "Where's the Calculator?” discourse isn't about a calculator app, it's about the missing apps of the core OS

The latest Freakonomics claims the ADA does more harm than good in terms of people with disabilities being hired.
This is the first time I have heard this. Is there truth here or is this just some capitalist lobbying?

With a bit over a month away, it's a good time to start a document with questions about existing frameworks for the one-on-one labs, and create a list of things/radars to test when the first betas drop. It's easy to otherwise forget about those issues and workarounds that have accumulated over the past year in the excitement of the new announcements.

    Here’s the thing, when the DoJ goes after companies for things other than monopolies, it can often win. Apple did break the law when it tried to do price fixing for ebooks. It straight up did that. It also colluded with other big tech companies to depress salaries. Those settlements made sense b/c like, yeah, those laws were clearly broken. But without seeing the full docs, being mad that Apple has private APIs it hoarded for itself is such a weird thing to spend 5 years investigating.

    I went back and forth on whether to show the real storage situation or the one that's presented by Apple.

    We show actual bytes used on the media, Apple only shows stuff that can't be jettisoned. And everyone asks about the discrepancy because they have no idea why it would be different. Neither did I at first!

    But knowing the true status can be important because reclaiming space can be a bottleneck for all kinds of things.

    @nighthawk If you have a 15 Pro Max, you can turn on 4k 30 ProRes and use the “free resources” button but not sure how much it frees. I guess the % freed up would depend on total storage space.

    One of my dreams is to eventually do an updated version of our About screen in realtime 3D that can also be viewed in AR. That dream is slowly getting closer.

    This is the first time since probably 2008 (for iPod touch 2nd gen, the good one) that I haven’t been a day one new Apple device person but you know what, I’m fine waiting. It isn’t even the money. I could buy it with cash no problem. But it’s the principle of not having a way to test it in advance and no clear use case that has me concerned. A friend did get one and I’ll try hers out on the 2nd and I might have FOMO, but like, I gotta be honest, I haven’t been sold on it yet.

    Dumb question: how does iMessage choose what number/email to message? Sometimes on my dad's phone when he taps "Message" on my contact it chooses my work email address, and then tries to MMS that. Or can I add that to my Apple ID somehow?

    @christianselig This is so annoying. When someone with multiple numbers in my contacts sends a text with a phome number and I tap it to get the menu so I can call or text, the menu pops up with the various context methods (call, message, etc), and tapping one opens a new menu with the list of all their numbers instead of the one I tapped. I don’t understand how that is okay.

    2023 was a big year for me. Very big. Coming out as transgender. Beginning HRT. Having my orchiectomy.

    2024 will be big, too. My divorce is final on day one, January 1st. After the remaining financial ties are untangled and separated, I can legally change my name.

    And by the end of the new year, hopefully the U.S. government won't fall to the Nazis who want to murder me and my people.

    Should be interesting times.
