I honestly cannot believe that we’ve been around for seven years! Incredibly grateful that I get to do this for a living.

We’re going to make it a very special 7th birthday.

Next week, Halide turns seven (7!) years old!

That's a lot in app years. We've got something very special planned to celebrate... ✨

And we thought dealing with a bug that lost photos on iOS was bad, turns out the opposite might be worse:

We just found out we were actually featured in Apple’s iPad event. Can you find us?

Here’s a quick guide on shooting a great Aurora shot with your iPhone:

Spectacular aurora happening across a lot of the northern hemisphere right now β€” easily photographed by iPhone with night mode or tripod. Are you seeing it?

According to Stu Maschwitz at @prolost the "Let Loose" Apple iPad event was shot entirely on iPhone β€” but with external lenses. Pretty interesting setup! https://prolost.com/blog/panavision-iphone

If the new iPad Pro would be just as thick as the last generation, it'd basically lose its camera bump entirely.

Is it too extra to make an entire custom VHS display style font for a one-off free iPad app?

Of course not. Radiant, a Lux font we made with
Jelmar Geertsma for Orion.

Shooting the total solar eclipse? Here's a thread with some tips on how to get a great shot β€” even with your iPhone.

halide,
@halide@mastodon.social avatar

TIP 1: The key to getting a shot right is often mastering exposure. Eclipses are darker than bright sunlight, but still bright!

Step 1 is to reduce the light your iPhone takes in. Don't have eclipse goggles or welding glass? Use sunglasses, or even tinted car windows.

The second step is to reduce your exposure to get a high contrast shot. You'll want to get the sky as dark as you can.

On Apple Camera, that means tapping and swiping (this might change focus, so beware). In Halide, swipe down to adjust your exposure easily.

Only shooting the eclipse itself? If you have an iPhone Pro, that telephoto lens (2Γ—, 3Γ—, maybe even 5Γ—!) is your best friend β€” crop tighter later for best results.

Extra tip: Find an interesting shot with other lenses, tooβ€”the light of an eclipse creates wonderful scenes.

Lastlyβ€”and stop us if you've heard this from us beforeβ€”shoot RAW!

RAW isn't just about a higher quality shot with less processing. It will let you push exposure lower and correct more color later. Shoot RAW now, edit the shot later.

Don't forget to show us your shots later!

Almost total solar eclipse time! We'll be sharing some shooting tips for those lucky enough to be able to witness it in North America this weekend.
