Good morning. I have my semi annual cancer surgery today. It’s so much fun. Everyone should experience this kind of joy. Well, I mean, every Republican, anyway.

Made it 4 years without catching COVID. It was a good run.

@Riedl Congratulations, I guess. My record fell 2.5 months ago. All good things must pass, as George said.

BTW, I took my bike to a new shop. Great place here in Fort Lauderdale. Trek Bikes. While they sell the high end stuff, their service and turnaround was scary fast. Almost while I waited. My problem wasn’t the derailleur, but the shifters. Both needed flushing and reindexing. $65. Fair.

I spot design challenges everywhere I. It’s depressing how little has really changed in American life since the wave of consolidations in the ‘70s-00s. wiped out the little guy in almost everything but sex and drug dealing. Almost everything that isn’t tech is ripe for reinvention, but we lack the requisite small maker/inventor ecosystem that mushroomed after WWII. We could get that back with clever tax incentives for “going small.”

The correct solution is a foot or knee operated device. But like so many products that built America, these are the kinds of innovations that only get built when the dominant vendors in any sector decide to make something new. Small indy manufacturing in America is largely extinct. And it shows.

I wonder how the Pali movement will feel when Hamas rejects this new deal with everything they asked for weeks ago. I’d like to be wrong but I bet I’m not. At what point do folks realize that Hamas uses war as a pretext for them to hold power. Which is a big reason why this intractable mess remains one.

Social celebritydom creates this network effect where someone gets a following based on their occasional pseudo-prescient pithiness, or a blog they stopped writing a decade ago, the algos blow them up, and then they think not much really has been said until THEY say it. And we’re suppose to LIKE and REPOST it like it was some original thought. It’s just systemic now. And really tiresome. The Fediverse, while not immune, has been a welcome respite from the worst of it.

Tired of reading what “hypocrites” Republicans are, or how they “project” onto Democrats almost every morally bankrupt thing they do. It’s like repeating that water is moist, or bird shit on your wipers makes a bigger mess. It just doesn’t need 500,000 social media posts each day.

Today, Gov. Sununu reversed himself, and he too will vote for Trump. You’d think the nepo-baby of one of the most craven Republicans who ever lived would have a little more backbone, right?

Why isn’t the NRA defending Hunter against this selective prosecution of a gun offense? Aren’t they all about the freedom do anything with a gun, including throwing it in a dumpster? And if the Biden DoJ were corrupt, wouldn’t charges be erased by now? Is FoxNews lying to me?

Remember when a fascist takedown of America was something only Antifa crackpots down at the end of the bar were worried about? Those were good times.

I have this emerging theory that too many Americans (and others) are stuck in romantic and teen-comedy world and speak. To prove my point, I want to crowd-watch all 100-200 classics and make an index of all the idioms, tropes, metaphors, cliches, motifs and archetypical personas that too many seem to have consciously or subliminally molded their perceptions of themselves, society, and life itself around. Does this sound insane? If not, wanna help?

A lot of sense. But I’d argue it’s not “the university,” but rather, all universities (schools, libraries, hospitals, and all other institutions, public and private).

And not “Mastodon,” but Open social servers (of any flavor). Anything but Big social.

@tuckerm @shoq Hmm frankly my first thought as an alternative to the long threads (due to message length limits) would be "something that lets you post lengthy articles".

But then one could argue that already exists, and it's called "a website".

Now, the main issue - as usual with massive amounts of information - is finding that information. And at the moment I'm unaware of any universal search tech in the fediverse. You know, something cross-use-case. Searching all activitypub services.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@1nd33d I agree with you about search, but it has to be limited to crawling only sites and services that opt-in. I’m still amazed that Google or DuckDuckGo doesn’t see that opportunity. (I have a bad feeling Zuckerberg does.)
But I also agree with
@tuckerm that content publishing for scholars and any professional has to be about so much more than “long posts.” It has to combine several authoring and publishing tools in a single solution and be very easy to …

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

configure, administer and moderate. It will happen. The only question is, will the killer app come from the ecosystems of ActivityPub, ATProto, or a wildcard. Right now, I think it’s far too early to say.

Anyone know a better bike derailleur tune up tutorial than this one? he’s good, but the videos just don’t get detailed enough to make it clear exactly what lines up with what.

The central feeling of democracy is hope.

The central feature of autocracies is fear.

Low-information voters have only hazy and cliched takes on what tyranny really is, and how making other people terrified to challenge the ruling authority can quickly become a career for millions of citizens.

The “Mastodon is too complicated” narrative obscured a larger understanding that the fediverse was a work in progress; one that can liberate us from the tyranny of a mass media controlled by fascists.

I’ve always been math-challenged. What are the odds of a Trump rally being struck by a meteoroid?

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Someway, somehow, as a collective, we must figure out how to explain to MAGAs that being able to shout “everything sucks!” does not qualify someone to run a government bureaucracy. It doesn’t build any roads, schools, bridges, or hospitals. At some point, someone has to actually do something.

Trump’s followers are so many, and so deranged, it’s frightening to consider, but we are totally unprepared for this deadly madness to scale-up to a Hitler Youth levels, very fast. History doesn’t have to repeat exactly for us to fall into the abyss and never return to what we once had. Gen Z and Alpha have only known dysfunctional society.

When Sam Altman was ousted as CEO, Kara Swisher pushed a story that framed him as the victim of a board captured by AI doomers.

But as more detail has emerged about Altman’s lies and “toxic” conduct, it’s become clear she was a conduit for his narrative.
