Very annoyed by the fact that modern UI/HMI designs have a tendency to disregard well-researched and established solutions and replace them with shitty ones either because it's cheaper or because it's trendy. Flat UI is objectively harder to use. Replacing physical controls with a huge touchscreen in cars is dangerous. Replacing buttons and forms with a chat bot is fucking annoying. There is no need to make your checkboxes round like a special little snowflake. Fuck your dark patterns and especially "maybe later".

senil888,

@volpeon Lack of physical controls for everything is the WORST. If I ever replace my car's stereo unit with something Android Auto friendly, it has to have at least a volume knob or buttons for volume.

I'm very confident exactly three well known companies make those. and they're both the floating screen style so they'd never in a good position in my car without blocking SOMETHING.

Pioneer maybe succeeds with one that has a little motorized screen that folds down and slides away when not in use, but even then I don't think it has a volume knob or buttons. plus same issue it'd block my hazard button Dx

Tesla cars use TOUCH BUTTONS instead of a lever for the left/right turn signal???

senil888,

@volpeon They use touch everything. Don't even have a physical gear shifter, no buttons or lever or even a dial.

A thought stirred by a jaded commenter:

One of the many half-truths that gets perpetuated is that new cars have many more issues than old cars and that they're only designed to make it past the warranty period before they crumble apart.

The average age of cars on the road keeps going up. That could not be possible if recently-made cars were in fact less reliable or repairable.

I would submit that the actual problem here? It's mechanics who don't keep up with the times.

senil888,

@TechConnectify @wolf480pl "unplugging until it starts working" (or "gets worse") is a good, if crude, troubleshooting method. It's like commenting out blocks of code or removing a full program from something to see if that's part of the problem.

It's trial and error. Tedious, but it's worthwhile.

(and I personally hate every car that says "you can go so long without maintenance!" because that's a great way to not notice there's a problem that could become serious because you don't check in often. The main reason my '06 Jeep Liberty has survived to almost 150k is because I get it checked constantly. I know there's a specific issue this car can develop, and I want to make sure it never does. And the only way to do that is to take it to people who can check for that specific problem)

Why does Volpeon have wings? There are many reasons:

  • blanket when you're cold
  • fan when you're hot
  • hugs
  • zero-emission air travel
senil888,

I always thing suggested-algorithm free reverse chronological timelines are funny because I saw a tumblr post a while back that loved it for the reason of whenever you see a beloved mutual post something like "I'm normal now" you're about to witness the wildest moments of their life for who knows how long, followed by what set them off.

In the opposite order of when they experienced it. And I think that's beautiful.

senil888,

@gabboman There's an option for it, and there's still a bit of one in the normal reverse-chrono timeline, but it at least is NOT noticeable when scrolling. If someone reblogs one post ten times in a row, I just get to see the same post ten times in a row.

senil888,

@gabboman oh I think that's still a thing you can toggle, but I turn it off. There's some filtering stuff there but it's still pretty close to reverse-chrono. And tumblr users FIGHT to keep it that way.
