Finished "Outland", Dennis E. Taylor's first novel and the first of the two books that make up the Quantum Earth series.

A light and fun read. Don't take it too seriously and enjoy the ride. 4/5 stars.

@WTL @mlawton @DennisETaylor This was one of my first audiobooks this year. Such a great story. I‘d recommend ROADKILL as your next Dennis E. Taylor novel. Afterwards: THE BOBIVERSE.

@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@mlawton @WTL @DennisETaylor Hah! Another great author is Daniel Suarez. His writing is very close to what Dennis E. Taylor does. His DAEMON series (only two novels) is gorgeous!

Wet, wet, wet. At one point during the run I wanted to jump over a branch lying across the path in the woods. Unfortunately, the ground was so soggy, my left foot which was pushing me off the ground just slipped back. My right foot got tangled up in the branch. A second later I found myself lying flat on the floor. Yuck! Apart from that it was a good run. After Trump‘s conviction in NY yesterday, I skipped my audiobook and took a dive into my MSNBC podcasts.

@mlawton Soft: yes. Muddy and dirty: Also yes. There‘s still torrents of rain outside – and it won‘t stop. Tomorrow will be a rather ugly running experience… 🧐

sebastianhahn,
@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@WTL Great idea, I‘ll have to hire one now. Maybe he can do the running while I spend my time reading Sci-Fi novels at home… 😎

Another terrible run, hot and with my heart rate out of control. I cut it off early in frustrated disgust. I am not myself & I can’t explain it.

My stress and sleep issues have mostly resolved and that two weeks without running shouldn’t have affected my fitness as much as it has.

And while I may not understand it, it’s clear to see. I went through the stages of grief on the walk back & am mostly landed on acceptance. Will now run slower & target zone 2, rebuilding my vanished base.

@mlawton @recollir Do you know WHAT I TALK ABOUT WHEN I TALK ABOUT RUNNING by Haruki Murakami? It‘s an excellent book about running, the best about it is that it is completely devoid of any kind of pseudo-motivational YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IT talk, just a very personal story about an aging runner drawing comfort in just running. It is my most favorite book about running – maybe you‘ll enjoy it as well.

@Johan_Barelds @mlawton @recollir It‘s such a great book, I also love the audiobook version. Perfect for running! 👍🏻

The topic of first concerts we saw came up today and I was floored to realize that today is the thirtieth anniversary of my seeing Pink Floyd in concert at the Big O (Olympic stadium) in Montreal.

What a band to see live. And really set expectations way too high for other concerts.

What was your first concert?

sebastianhahn,
@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@WTL I cannot recall with absolute certainty, but I saw RUSH, VAN HALEN, LIVIN COLOR, BRYAN ADAMS and JOE SATRIANI in the early 1990s. When I was way younger I saw THE MAGIC FLUTE live, must have been my first opera.

Well, well, well, this was quite a fast one. And I didn’t even push, I just ran on. At one point I noticed that I felt slightly out of breath, then I looked at my watch and was going 4:35/km, so it was alright. Today‘s audiobook was DARK MATTER by Blake Crouch, which I‘ve read some weeks ago. The book was brilliant, the audiobook is as well. I‘m looking forward to the AppleTV+ series of it. Have a great Thursday, y‘all! #Running #applewatchultra2 #audiobooks #sciencefiction

Spent the afternoon setting up my new MacBook Air, installing loads of software. I like to do this manually, leaving behind all the unnecessary stuff from my former MacBook I don’t intend to use on the new machine…

@bomkatt @mlawton They always are. Fortunately, you won’t have to decide EVERY day, just every OTHER day… ;-)

Sleep, sweet sleep. So refreshing! And it also serves as a powerful running speed enhancer. As I was starting my run, I expected my pace to be in the usual 5:20-5:35 range on the outset and faster after some kilometers. But today was different, as I started with 5:17 and then went below 5:00/km and kept that pace for some time. Sweet. So my main takeaway is: More sleep. (I knew this well in advance, but I have to state the obvious…) Have a great Sunday, y‘all!

One of the largest HM in the world happened today in Göteborg. My new employer sponsors runners 👊 (signup fee, tent in the starting area with drinks, bbq, etc). Though I have my main ultra race next week I participated and took it as a training run (easy tempo pace without pushing it, definitely not race pace ). My start was at 1345 with over 30C in the sun (26C regular). 🥵😎. It was a fun event. More than 200000 spectators along the course. (Haven’t run it since 2004 (1:19 - 20 years later 20 minutes slower 🤣)). Legs felt quite fresh after it. Ran back home 🙈 (4km). Heat was noticeable on the HR. But it didn’t had an effect on my hydration needs. Took only small sips every 5K at the aid stations. 🤷‍♂️. Good day. https://www.goteborgsvarvet.se/

@recollir Gorgeous pace, you‘re an impressive runner! But 30 C is a horrific temperature for such a run… 🥵🥵🥵

sebastianhahn,
@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@officehippy @recollir 1-4 minutes better than my PB. But the main achievement is, in my humble opinion, that you were able to maintain that kind of pace at these heated temperatures…

Friday:
102 seconds of plank
11 minutes of yoga for runners
30 minutes of HIIT
20 minutes of strength training
5.24 km of (17°C, 100% humidity)

Everything up to the run was tough, but fine. The run was best described as suffering in motion. By the time I was done, there was a Humidex of 26°C, and I did not handle it well.

It's mid-May and it's too hot out in the morning. I know this is only going to get worse, short and long term.

Can we please have winter back?

<sighs in digital>

sebastianhahn,
@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@WTL I‘ve never done any kind of HIIT workout. But I see you doing them frequently. In your opinion: Is it worth trying out?

sebastianhahn,
@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@WTL I was just asking because my doc wrote in his report after my check-up that I maybe should be evaluating some sporting alternatives to running… (last sentence). I‘ll try. Promise!
