At the panel on electrification of buses and the advantages of in-motion charging trolleybuses!

@AlxLndOMountain tells us, as recently as 2 years ago, Muni’s plan was to phase out trolleybuses for far less efficient battery buses. Research and advocacy has begun to change that thinking. #TransitTooter

"As a leading craft beer gastropub, a third of our sales might come from delivery... the entire experience of The Monk’s Kettle has now been transformed from a welcoming place where you hang out with friends in a fun atmosphere…to eating a lukewarm burger and fries in your apartment."

a sad statement on what's happened to community, culture and public space in San Francisco.

lazyweb: is there anything like a legal right to be able to enter and exit one's home without being surveilled by a neighbor's camera?

i know there's no expectation of privacy in public, but say you live at the end of a cul-de-sac and can't go anywhere without passing by someone's place, and they're constantly filming and upload it all to the cloud where it's retained forever and AI is trained off the video of you, at some point this seems unjust, right?

If you're in SF you can sign up for Supergreen to power your home with 100% renewably generated electricity for a few bucks more a month. I just signed up. https://www.cleanpowersf.org/supergreen

With the Guardian, Mission Local, and New Republic all covering big spending in SF, it would be a great time for a progressive to announce for mayor. Just saying

The #Geary bus lane hearing is going on right now. Agenda and call-in info: https://www.sfmta.com/sites/default/files/reports-and-documents/2023/08/8-15-23_mtab_agenda_-_special_meeting_0.pdf

Mayor Breed just put out this letter endorsing it, which is good to see. #SFPol

We have also been responsive and worked collaboratively to address parking loss. The original plan removed 60 parking spaces, and I worked with the SFMTA to cut the parking loss in half to 31 parking spaces.... The other concern we have heard is that this will have similar construction impacts to the Van Ness Project. But painting transit lanes and making immediate pedestrian safety improvements are not significant infrastructure work like Van Ness. The Geary Quick Build will only take about 3 months... This project is not just about one street. It’s also part of our broader efforts to make our City more livable, affordable, and sustainable. As we implement our Housing Element, which under state law requires the city to plan for over 82,000 housing units in the next 8 years, we are planning for more housing in all of our neighborhoods. This is why we need to ensure we have robust transit service to support working people, families, seniors, and young people. This project also meets our Climate Action Plan, which includes a goal of the City having 80% of trips be low-carbon by 2030, meaning transit, walking, or biking. Both our Housing Element and the goals of the Climate Action Plan were unanimously adopted by the Board of Supervisors, and the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project Phase II is a part of delivering on those plans... I encourage the SFMTA Board to support the project’s timeline... Sincerely, London N. Breed Mayor

how do we make progress on transit, pedestrian safety, and bikes under a bad mayor?

every candidate—Breed, Farrell, Peskin, Safai, Lurie—is bad on this issue. we ain't getting a Hidalgo or Wu. there will be no bike mayor. it's just us.

so how are we going to fight an apathetic-to-hostile, powerful executive for the next four years and win?

okay a bike thing I have not figured out is how to get peaches and nectarines home safely. I hit one bump and got home to discover this. it’s not even ripe, it’s too hard to eat yet aside from the bruise! how do you solve this, bike tooter?

"There is no other definition of bigotry in the world that equates criticism of a state, even harsh and unfair criticism, with discrimination or bigotry against the state’s people. If one claimed that denunciations of the violent foundations of the Russian empire are 'anti-Slavic'[...] we would immediately see through that as just an instrumentalist defense of Russian state interests."

I wish this thread by @alfredtwu had existed when #SFPlanning was writing the #HousingElement.

Their plan is total Corridor Zoning along 19th Ave: the highest density directly on a car sewer with narrow sidewalks. While I'm glad to see density on the westside at all, this kind of stroad-adjacent housing isn't nice to live in and gives dense housing a bad name. Second Street Housing would be much better.

I would like to vote for a progressive candidate who will fight against cop- and jail-centric responses to public safety at least as hard as they’ll fight tall buildings on the waterfront.

Ideally, harder, since tall buildings on the waterfront are perfectly fine, but I’m setting the bar low.

many leftist books are glorified wishlists. they're like "we could have a network of food and housing cooperatives. instead of relying on police, we would meet regularly in public safety councils drawn from the community itself. different neighborhood councils would meet in a regional federation to—"

sounds great, but who's the "we" who'll organize these things? you are not the first author to write a list of nice ideas. that's not the hard part

BART is spending $90m on harder to jump fare gates, while raising fares to bring in an extra $23m it needs. The funding source could just be, don't install new fare gates.

I sympathize with the jumpers: BART fares are extremely high relative to peer systems like DC's Metro (which is $6 max, and $2 flat fare nights/weekends). At a time of low ridership, it's frustrating to see #SFBART spend money to keep people off the trains.

I’ll be honest, even as an opponent of Tumlin’s asinine idea of a center running bike lane, I’m surprised the numbers are this bad. There is no spinning a 50% decline in biking on the corridor. #ValenciaStreet #BikeSF #BikeTooter

Mission Local covers the systematic barricading of sidewalks with ugly, bulky, barely maintained “planters” to mess with unhoused people. “Beautification Project” in quotes is right.
