I've been approached by a few people/platforms about partnering up for the official Pixelfed hosting service

It would be nice to not have to worry about that, but at the same time, this could help fund sustainable development

The PoC I wrote is pretty cool, everything is automated from checkout to logging in, and there is a basic dashboard for admins

🤔

@dansup I'm willing to commit 20% of any revenue from https://communick.com/pixelfed if you add it as one of the recommended ways for people to get their own instance.

With the recent moves from #Twitter, #Reddit, and even #Youtube, I think it’s becoming clear that ads are not a sustainable business model in the long run (and yes, I know I run a YouTube channel funded by ads 😅)

I took a look at a few examples, at how this decline is also making the web worse for everyone, at alternative platforms, and tried to imagine what an internet without ads to fund content creation and big platforms could look like:

@thelinuxEXP I think (hope?) that in the future the content creators will cut the middleman and start doing the distribution themselves so they will be dealing with advertisers/sponsors directly.

So in your case, you'd be getting "your own" Peertube and your revenue could come from insertions instead of pre-rolls, or "gated" content for subscribers.

Edit: phone #'s will be hashed before uploaded

How would you feel if I ran a centralized service for @pixelfed, specifically for the #pixelfedApp, that would facilitate discovery via uploading contacts list from the app?

This would allow new people to discover accounts in their phone contacts, making it easier to find friends and family’s accounts.

I know this has significant privacy implications, so I welcome your feedback, boosts appreciated 🙏

@dansup you can do this is in a privacy-preserving way, no?

  • Instead of asking the user to upload their contacts, get the user own email/phone/pixelfed account handle.

  • Upload a hash of the private contact information, paired with clean text pixelfed account info.

  • Other people now are able to find each other by simply asking your service "do you know anyone with this hash?", and in case your service answers yes, then your app can say "yes, you should talk with so-and-so@pixelfed.

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@dansup almost. What I am saying is that you don't even need to upload the contact list. You can do the matching in the device.

So, it is really hard for me to share personal things online, but I need to get out of my comfort zone: I was fired from my day job last week and now I need to figure out if I should double down on communick or I should keep it as side-project and look for another job.

I will make a series of polls to see if there is any viable business. Please boost for visibility.

I'm increasingly starting to feel that HTTP API design is probably better off just being roughly-namespaced-RPC (e.g. POST /books/list_books) rather than trying to fit non-CRUD operations into carefully crafted REST URLs - and with OpenAPI clients, nobody is seeing the URLs anyway.

I'm curious what the sentiment is amongst others on here?

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@andrew I feel like if we are doing RPC, just get rid of the whole url thing and just put everything on the POST payload.

Dear @murena , I really want to be able to promote /e/OS, but it gets really difficult to do if Location services are completely unreliable or don't work on the Fairphone 3, even after all these years.

The BVG (Berlin transit) app can never find the station when I want to buy a ticket. Is it an issue with the app, the GPS on the phone, the lack of Google Services, all of the above? Why is it that I can never get it to work when I need it most?

When available, do you typically use software/browse websites in your native language?

@stefan

Two grave sins in your idea:

  • A pop-up
  • Trying to override a preference that was already revealed to you by the user agent.

I'd favor to just use the browser's language selection and (perhaps) highlight a language toggle in case you don't have a translation for the browser's language.

@stefan Yeah, a toast would make a lot more sense.

@stefan

Maybe you can make a #poll to help me answer one thing...

I'm running a commercial instance (meaning, access is only for those that pay for a subscription) with prices that can go as low as $0.50/month/user ($5/month, and you can invite 10 people to come with you)

My question is: why is it that there are people willing to pay $5, $10, $20/month to some donation-based server, but balk at the idea of patronizing a business than can offer them a better deal?

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@stefan I know that is their idea, but I'm yet to see any large instance that is sustainable (financially- and labor-wise) on this model. I wrote about this on https://raphael.lullis.net/community-is-not-enough/ but the gist is:

  • the free riders far outnumber the donors

  • free riders have nothing to lose with bad behavior and are more likely to create problems for moderators

  • the instance gets big but is fully dependent on volunteers who end up burning out or lose interest when the original "community" is lost.

"Hey Dan, What processes need to change to enable contributions to pixelfed?"

This is a recent DM I recieved, and it struck a chord.

I'm so used to working alone, and I realize that isn't healthy.

The state of our documentation is sad, and I need to fix this.

I'm going to move the docs to the pixelfed repo to be able to more easily update them, and the docs site will be updated to pull in the markdown files after each merge/build.

@dansup

Dan, are you getting any type of help in terms of establishing a product roadmap and/or prioritzation of features?

Speaking as someone who wants to offer pixelfed managed hosting (on https://communick.com) and who already has a growing list of interested customers, I'm willing to pay to get the following:

  • docker deployment that is reproducible and idempotent
  • First-tier support for LDAP Authentication
  • S3 storage that works right out of the box.
