Those beeps and boops you hear when you enter numbers on a phone are not just a sound effect, they are specific to the numbers you're entering. For your security, don't let that sound be recorded or even heard if you can help it. The numbers can be extracted by software. I can do it by ear. Especially don't record yourself calling your bank and then upload it to music streaming platforms. I'm not naming the song I just heard because it has someone's private information in it.

yall I'm sad. I enjoyed The Last of Us show enough to want to play the game, and unlike most video games out there, it's fully accessible to a completely blind player. But of course I don't have the hardware to play it on. Why would I? If I can't play 99.999% of all games, why would I spend money I don't even have on a gaming machine?
Finally, after 40 years, accessibility is coming to the mainstream gaming experience, and all of the games are too bulky to run on affordable hardware. I get that most games like this are just bulky anyways, and I'm not taking it personally or anything, but this really sucks.

rain,

shoutouts to all the indie game devs making accessible games that don't need a supercomputer to run them. Appreciate you all

rain, to accessibility

wait does Disney+ even let you search on the site? This is probably just another #accessibility problem but I literally see no search button or anything anywhere

Watching movies in 2023 be like:

  • Find torrents
  • Torrents won't download
  • Try to watch on streaming website
  • "would you like 57 billion popups?"
  • Give up and try to rent
  • "wdym you don't live in the US?? haha"
  • Try to buy
  • "no seriously, who doesn't live in the US? seems sus"
  • Give up forever and cry

It's Aug 17 2023 and my dad paid me a visit. I set up microphones over his steel pan and I sat at the piano. We had a jam, which doesn't happen nearly enough due to us living on the other side of town from each other, so I had to capture this for posterity.

rain,

@Onj damn it is way too late over here for me to be grooving this hard. You two complement each other wonderfully, really nice!

um... iOS Eloquence pronounces the name Katelyn as Kattalyn? What the absolute hell?

rain,

@TheQuinbox @cordova5029 @Brynify It does this with the first syllable of the English name for the city I live in. This is definitely not the dictionary, but I don't know what

Stupid idea of the day: A multi-player web game/simulation of the amusement park ride bumpercars. multiple people can get into cars, and fly around trying to smash into each other, with cool 3d audio, an offline mode, customizable time limits, etc. I'm in no position to code this at the moment, considering that I'm sick and also know absolutely nothing about the physics and math required to code this, but does anyone else think this would actually be kind of cool?

rain,

@TheQuinbox heck yes I would play this!

Sometimes wish it were possible to filter media in my timelines to only show things with descriptions. Mostly on Federated, but even home sometimes. Most of the undescribed media in my home TL is boosted, but I don't want to turn off boosts. And I'm not muting accounts just for boosting/posting undescribed media, unless it's the only thing that account posts.

rain,

@jens I've not watched those particular shows, but I've watched and read sooo many stories where this sort of thing is the driving force behind character conflict, and it's frustrating and boring. I don't personally mind a bit of drama. Hey, I'm even all right with the tension caused by characters not having the same information, although I like it better when it's for ironic or situational reasons. But I have little patience for the sort of thing you described. I can't relate and so I don't really connect. @actuallyautistic

I built a social media persona that I currently don't have the energy to maintain. It's all genuine, just very incomplete. Not really me. Or at least not all of me.
It's a compilation of aspects I thought would be agreeable, a relatable scope. A presence for its own sake. I don't resent that, I just don't know how to inhabit the shape I made for you right now. I'm sorry. I'm not disappearing, I'm just too many people and places to know who my name belongs to today.

@jens Thanks for the kindness and the follow 😊

Where does this trend come from where people describe their physical appearence during presentations? Who asked for this? I personally am rarely curious what anyone looks like or what they are wearing. If I am, I'll ask. It feels more like a narcecistic desire of theirs, to tell us how they look and what they are wearing. Which is okay, I guess, but I thought we were supposed to not judge based on appearence? And also, it puts pressure on everyone else to do likewise. Nothnx!

rain,

@objectinspace Because it's information that sighted people have access to by default. Bit weird that you'd call it narcissistic for someone to make that information accessible, just because it's about them.

rain,

@objectinspace > ...people cannot/do not wish to describe themselves objectively.

People are generally pretty subjective about themselves, I wouldn't call that narcissism. If you don't want to know, that's fine. If it makes you uncomfortable to describe yourself, I can understand that. I can even get wondering whether the information is really accurate. But everything else you've said feels disingenuous as hell to me

rain,

@talon Maybe I'm in the minority of blind people who are curious about what others look like. I'd be surprised, but I can accept that. When I first read this post, I didn't just think of meetings and presentations, but also image descriptions. When someone posts a selfie, I'm a little put out when the description is just something like "pic of me". Like here you, are sharing a picture of yourself you thought worth putting on the internet for others to see, isn't it a bit relevant what that looks like? I certainly wouldn't complain if I got a bit more detail on that.
@FreakyFwoof @objectinspace

deilann, to random

i really appreciate all the sighted people trying to support a culture of image descriptions but i wish they would consider the point

it's not "as someone who's B/VI i need to fully imagine what the picture i can't see is down to every detail"

it's "if you're using an image it serves a purpose and i'd like similar access to sighted people to your toot"

an #ImageDescription should replace the visual meaning, what an image adds, which is rarely the image specifics

rain,

@deilann Absolutely this. I 100% have sympathy for the difficulty of writing good image descriptions, but please, details details details! Give me specifics! Also, please don't tell me how the image should make me feel. If it's a good image description, I'll already be feeling it.
