Gift of the day.

105 PDF illustrations of nuclear reactors from around the world (1950 to present) compiled by Michaël Mangeon from the Nuclear Engineering International series entitled The World's Reactors.

I have another series of reactor diagram posters, some of which should be added sooner or later to the University of Arizona "Nuclear Engineering" collection presented here. Two are from a German hobby magazine, and the rest from "Nuclear Power" (a British publication which ran 1953-63).

High-quality scans are on my Patreon, and I posted lower-resolution ones to Reddit.

Here are a couple of links :

Capitalism is also not the same as "free enterprise". In fact it's almost the opposite. Every capitalist strives to lock potential competitors out of the marketplace.

It strikes me as likely to become a maintenance headache, and I'm not really sure what the advantage is. Hybrids show better fuel efficiency when they do a lot of driving in stop-and-go traffic, but I expect people to clear out of the way of the fire truck!

Mainstream economist assertions:
"Tipping points reduce global consumption per capita by around 1% upon 3°C warming and by around 1.4% upon 6°C warmings, based on a second-order polynomial fit of the data."

Keen: This was simply ridiculous. A planet missing those 8 critical elements of the Holocene environment would be totally unlike the one we currently inhabit.

guess what mainstream economists replied?

Economists often resemble a cult. I'm always struck by the way they say "the market system gives the optimal outcome" because they define the outcome of the market system as the optimal one.

publius,
@publius@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@GhostOnTheHalfShell

Some of them even go so far as to say that one is only truly human, reaching the high point of what we are capable of, when acting as "homo economicus", the idealized free agent adrift in the idealized market.

If that doesn't just shout "cult", I'm not sure what does.

I had a dream i was playing a card game where each card has a line of ancient latin poetry and you have to combine them to make interesting combinations. It came with a little electronic dictionary with a monochrome lcd game boy screen and a menu where you could pick which latin to english dictionary to use. There were very funny opinionated descriptions of each one

publius,
@publius@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@shuruchan @hannah

Yes, that's what I immediately thought of as well. That and a game known as "topping" which classically-educated folks used to play, in which a player would quote a line (or part of a line) from, say, the Odes of Horace, and the next player would complete the line or supply the next line.

Concerned ISD parents ask why their schools have to close
Rep. Ramos correctly calls out here. He appears to be on a mission to destroy public education in the name of “choice.” However, demographics don’t help. Cannot have schools operating at 60% capacity.

Meanwhile, in Keller ISD, parents and the new Superintendent are convinced that the construction of an extended-stay Motel 6 is going to result in their kids being abducted, or something. It wasn't clear. Comments at a public meeting were all along the lines of "look at everything going on in this society today! you never know what might happen!"

Meanwhile I want to know if those parents have vaccinated their kids, and if they supported the "more cops in schools" bill despite Uvalde.

@AmishSuperModel

Here's one attempt. It would presumably have been laughed at when it first appeared (and one is entitled to wonder if that was the intention), because enough mariners had gone between Australia, South America, and South Africa to know that the Atlantic and Pacific weren't actually several times wider at 40° S than at 40° N.

I do worry about the "leftists" who say they "reject the liberal rights-based discourse". But they are far from the imminent danger.

When it comes to a question of property rights versus human rights, I will always say that the former must give way to the latter. But then, my political sympathies, as much as they lie with anyone, lie with the anti-Marxist Communists, such as Landauer or Kropotkin. It takes a very strong State to enforce strong property rights.

publius,
@publius@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@petrescatraian @OGjester

That's a really important distinction. "Property in the means of production" versus "personal belongings" are two very different worlds. If you have modest property of the first kind, you have a good deal of control over your own life. (This was the point of Chesterton, Belloc, et al.) If you have a large property of the first kind, you have control over the lives of others. And the degenerate case of property rights over human rights is owning other people.

Dangit, that was the thing this revised diagram was supposed to solve!

I had been using dark gray for "productive absorption", light gray for "other absorption", and white for "undesirable absorption". So I changed it to white for "other absorption", dark gray for "undesired absorption", and white with a black tip (with the idea of an arrow pointing in a desired direction) for "productive absorption". And that is called out in the key at upper left. Is it still unclear?
