It seems to be the case that I can't log into GitLab.com any more using my native #GitLab account without activating some third party domain(s) for active JavaScript content. 😔

IMHO, basic functionality should work on any website without third party access. More and more web pages are violating that rule. 😢

(#Webdesigners may gasping now 😈 )

@benjohn Yes, the words are a bit harsh. However, I may ran out of patience because I've seen it so many times that people only realize negative consequences when it's too late.

My goal is to make people think before they make decisions for products. People need to learn that they don't have to be the experts but they should invest some time in research what independent experts are saying.

publicvoit, to VanMoof
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

If you bought a that has an issue when the vendor is not available, YOU did the mistake with your choice for this product.

If you bought a lawnmower robot that doesn't work when its vendor is out of business, you did the mistake.

If you bought a computer whose vendor collects your data in his cloud ➡️ your mistake.

I can go on like that forever.

YOU need to accept the obvious downsides when you once took the very clear risk.

Next time:

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@Bugspriet Any consumer doesn't need to be an expert herself. However, consumers need to learn to ask an independent expert if a certain complexity is involved.

You don't operate a car without a license and the same way, tool choices of high-tech tools aren't for people who only believe the salesperson who makes the money.

I blame 50% the school education and 50% the people who don't think twice when sacrificing their freedom, privacy, security, money, ...

Another example: phishing attacks.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

Addendum: if you made your product choice without thinking about potential risks, YOU do have a problem anyway.

In that case, you really should think of asking independent experts before buying very complex products that may cause you issues in the long run.

Btw, experts are constantly warning of #cloud services that are harming your #privacy (in a very subtle form!) including cloud-based #password managers, #macOS, #iOS, #facebook, #TikTok, ...

It's YOUR data and YOUR future. 😉

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@Bugspriet My personal choice for products like lawnmower robot, photovoltaic, ... was: I don't have Internet. What impact does this have? Does it stop working? How about updates? ...

(btw, SW updates are good but the basic functionality should not depend on network access)

There are simple + more difficult choices, even for a tech-savvy person. For example, it's almost impossible to buy an electric car without buying massive surveillance. And its hard to reduce surveillance on mobile phones.

"Pay oder Okay" auf #heise.de illegal laut deutscher Datenschutzbehörde
Große Auswirkungen auf viele andere deutsche Nachrichtenseiten
https://noyb.eu/de/pay-or-okay-tech-news-site-heisede-illegal-decides-german-dpa

Wunderbar. Gewusst haben wir das ohnehin schon lange. Nun ist es aber durchgefochten und sehr viele andere Webseiten müssen sich nun warm anziehen. Weitere Klärungen werden folgen.

#EU Grundrechtsverletzung vom #Datenschutz #heise #DSGVO

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@martinsteiger Nope.

(Via https://www.ccc.de/de/updates/2021/ccc-formulierungshilfe-regierungsprogramm)

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

If you were to give an introduction to #nix and #nixos to a crowd of developers mostly unfamiliar with its core concepts, what aspects of nix would you emphasise/highlight?

I'll be giving such an introduction next week to my colleagues and thought it'd be a good idea to check-in with the NixOS community on here (or at least see if my take on what aspects I'd hightlight align with what you folks think is important)

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@thees (I'm a beginner myself!)

One config for multiple hosts (even OS-independent!)

Abstract myself from the OS layer (I don't want to spend effort/time with it)

My hope: great support when settings, ... change during upgrade (not confirmed yet)

Ability to add some(!) tool-configuration in Nix instead of tool-specific config (counter-example: any non-trivial xfce setting which isn't available in Nix)

Faster rampup time when switching hardware.

I just can't use browsers without vertical tab bars anymore. How do people live with seeing only favicons?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kilian Keeping the number of tabs per window at a minimum level by using one window per task. 😉

#PIM

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kilian I'm using named tabs https://github.com/tpamula/webextension-window-titler and tab mover https://code.guido-berhoerster.org/addons/firefox-addons/tab-mover/ which do the job for me. Currently: 20 windows, 300 tabs.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kilian Most of the time, I choose the window of choice before I open the URL so the right window is used. If I end up in the wrong one, I use tab mover for the right target window.

Pro #NixOS tip for you!

If you're asking for help, share your whole system configuration! NixOS is reproducible from that configuration file which makes it way easier for other people to reproduce your problem and help find a solution. No more guess work like other distros!

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@jakehamilton How about included secrets?

Those won't be part of the repo and you have to find them all in order to disable/fake them.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@chfkch @jakehamilton So far, I never did use something for secrets and therefore, I did not publish anything with secrets.

And yes, starting to look for a solution for that issue is also on my list.

However, with low prio because I suspect a steep learning curve and therefore no public Nix config from me at the moment.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@chfkch I couldn't find something related to "agenux". Do you have an URL for me?

I've seen the #Microsoft #OneNote hype and warned the users of long-term lock-in effects. Then OneNote failed and people lost (parts of) their data.

I've seen the #Evernote hype and it happened again.

Now, I see the #Obsidian hype. (At least the file format is an open one.)

🤷

https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/

If you want to spare yourself some effort, think of starting with a solution with no lock-in: https://karl-voit.at/orgmode/

#Orgmode #Emacs #PIM #publicvoit

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@ctietze 100% agree!

I did not prase it as good as you but meant the same thing.

Obsidian: for people who are not able to learn Emacs Org-mode for reasons. 👍 (we may differ on the set of valid reasons or their priority)

If you are in a position of being able to learn such a system (which is easer than most people suggest), Emacs has its advantages over Obsidian.

And: There can't be any bancruptcy of Emacs. Therefore, there is zero lock-in effect except in your brain, of course. 😉
