Out at a restaurant for dinner and Superbad is playing on the TV. The people next to me are lamenting about kids these days and their phones (as I sit at the bar on my phone). This is… an experience.

This week I held the first week of work orientation and briefing for our new trainee who is originally from Wisconsin, US. Our spoken work language is Finnish and it seems she handles it brilliantly as she has been living in Finland for some time now. But I've noticed for me it's intriguing to have another spoken language in my world once again. All our docs and coding is naturally in English so it's not much of a stretch to actually speak English out loud, to me at least.

Despite this we have decided that it is good to use Finnish at work, because she wants to learn more and it's difficult otherwise, if we all keep speaking English. We Finnish people are funny that way, we don't really speak Finnish if the other person is not fluent with it, we switch to English too easily, because of our natural hospitability and because most of the Finns like to make the other person comfortable instead and we generally know English well.

I actually have some family from Australia from my mothers side, some of my cousins don't even know Finnish even though they have Finnish names, as they have lived most of their lives in Australia. I've never been there, but kinda through my special interest in languages I've learned to speak English pretty fluently and it comes naturally to me.

Anyway, solely the fact she is American living in Finland is kinda awesome in my world. After everyone has left the office we often get stuck in these long discussion about cultural differences, metal music and life in general. We have a lot in common and this week seems like a good start. I'm hopeful this will give birth to something great in our work community.

@rolle I'm in the US, and I had a friend growing up whose parents (I think) we're originally Finnish citizens. After HS, he decided to move to Finland again and has been there ever since. So there's at least two US citizens there! 😆

Does #iceshrimp have a way to delete posts older than some age? It's been a feature I've been hoping for in #firefish for a while but it never happened. Would love if it's available. Even if it is a manual DB update or whatever that'll work.

After 2.5 years, I'm finally going to get over my fear of putting things up on my plaster walls and actually decorate my apartment. Better late than never, right?

Things that have stopped me: I rent and want to get my security deposit back when I move out, so I don't want to ruin the walls. The plaster has slight cracks in it already because it's so old. A lot of my posters are framed and heavy, so command strips might not work.

(Plaster walls are the worst.)

@starshaped yeah, and it can be kinda hard to find studs through plaster. In our house we've got original plaster walls with drywall over top of them. So that adds a bit more fun to it!

If it helps, if you get a stud finder, it's usually possible to find studs! Between that and checking for studs anywhere between 16-20 inches away between other ones, you can usually find them.

🤔Nothing confirms the statistic that most white Americans have zero Black friends more than seeing whole newspaper articles call a "fade," by far the most common, most generic, simplest haircut that's worn by most Black US citizens, a "Travis Kelce."🤦🏿‍♂️

Even with fancier Black men's haircuts, most start with a basic fade, and get more complicated from there.

The fade is so common and so foundational that it's how Black barbers are judged. It's like asking an artist to draw a perfect circle.

Trying to take bus/train from NH to a NYC appointment and back. It seems like all of the schedules are a half hour too tight. Even routing through Boston on way back is very close or a long layover into evening.

@jerzone dunno where you're headed from or to, but I often end up doing the Acela from South Station into Monahan Hall (Penn Station basically). Usually there's a bus to grab from South Station. Might be worth a check?

I could just switch my session to Saturday too. But that often ends in me not going, which I really dislike. And also I don't want to wait to try the shoes...

Debating doing a vlog of just casual lifting talk and general life things. I think it'd be lifting footage with a voice overlay.

I don't think I'd actually have time I'd be willing to dedicate to this, but I enjoy that kind of content. Anyone else like that style of content?

@starshaped I think what I'd do is include my workouts and some of my walks during the week, and then use those as backgrounds for me to riff over junk. Maybe separate style videos would be better though!

Dang, gotta wait an entire week for my new shoes. Also it's amazing that only having to wait a week is "rough" now. There was a time not terribly long ago that a week was great. Sometimes I wonder if life would improve in a lot of ways if we went back to that being more the norm too.

It's tough for many folk to get started, and being kind and helpful really helps everyone feel included. 👍🏿

Try not to complain about the NY resolution crowds. Instead, be happy that your gym will be solvent for another year!

Try not to get cranky about gym etiquette misses. Instead, take the opportunity to pass knowledge forward, with kindness! Someone taught you once.

@mekkaokereke definitely a good reminder. I've been that new gym goer, and that cranky gym goer. Glad to say I'm not anymore. I'm happy with people making efforts and discovering the great fun it is eventually!

Let the sun shine in!

I finally settled on a solar setup for our property (tracker) after waffling for years and years. The warm weather meant they could get out and dig the holes and trenches in Nov/Dec, install everything, and amazingly get it activated before the end of the year. Power company just put in a new meter for two-way power/metering and the system is officially active.

Once we get some sun. 🌥️ Looks like we'll have to wait until … Sunday.

I don't mean to be ungrateful, but what's in a scone mix doesn’t help MAKE scones any easier. It's like saying, “I measured two cups of flour for you to make scones with!” 🙃

@Are0h So far I'm liking it. It's my first pass at self-hosting a fedi instance. One thing I hope happens is having a plugin to use The Bad Space to manage instance blocks. It's kind of painful right now, given you have to kind of just know what to block, and manually enter each instance line-by-line.
