The "Blast From The Past" full Commander deck reveal is live on #tolariancommunitycollege!

Looks like @Wizards_Magic put some spicy stuff in here, and more than a few incredibly welcome reprints!

Check it out here: https://youtu.be/_5gqXG_PPjk

pointB,

@TolarianCollege @Wizards_Magic Hey Prof, you may have answered this somewhere already, but is "The Professor" an homage to The Doctor (or #7 in specific)?

pointB, to MagicArena

After what I thought was a very fun and interactive 20+ turn control mirror, my opponent decided to salt rope me for no less than 2 minutes. Thanks, #magicarena community :)

I feel like this card is really good in almost any mono-colored commander deck, right? It's basically free because it taps for four mana immediatley, and then you untap with at least 9 mana? And after you've dumped your hand, you can refill?

I'm for sure putting this in my Kiki-Jiki deck, and I'll try it in my other mono-colored decks, too.

Is this an auto-include, like War Room?

Stroke of Midnight seems just as playable as Excise the Imperfect and Generous Gift. Excise exiles and Gift hits lands, but the mana cost on Excise is harder to hit, and a 3/3 on gift can actually pose a threat in some cases. I'd play this in a lot of decks.

My biggest concern with #magicthegathering Universes Beyond is the effective creation of a secondary reserved list. For Legacy, Vintage, and Commander, where RL cards are the norm and the community has found ways to deal with it (proxies, MTGO, etc), it's less concerning, but The One Ring will never appear in a Modern Masters set. I can hope that Wizards reprints non-UB versions of chase cards like they've done for Secret Lair exclusives, but it makes me want to buy into Modern even less.

pointB,

@pixel I'd believe that to be true, but its been years since TWD and they still haven't actually announced the reprint they claimed to intend to do. I think Wizards is experimenting with how to print proper RL cards (see magic 30, playtest counterspell, etc), and I think it's equally possible that in 10 years the One Ring will be at the same price or lower than it is now, but until I hear "Yes, we will reprint this card, in a way that will meaningfully affect supply", I have to assume they won't

  1. Ravnica & Innistrad Remastered (Huge fan of the previous remastered sets)
  2. Bloomburrow (My partner's gonna love this one)
  3. Tournament Pioneer on Arena by 2025
  4. Teased at some PvE content on Arena
  5. WE'RE GOING BACK TO LORWYN BAYBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Also that MH3 art of the demon sitting on the throne made of angel wings is so sick

pointB,

@pixel Upcoming set, it's all anthropomorphic animals. I think it'll feel very much like original Lorwyn in style, but even cuter.

its funny to me that this was the stereotypical magic the gathering player in 2009 and now your LGS is 50% 130lb transfemmes

Re-playing Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 has helped me learn two important lessons:

  1. PvE Magic the Gathering is a ton of fun, and I would pay real money for a PvE campaign in Magic Arena, especially if it unlocked cards for use elsewhere.
  2. Pelakka Wurm is the perfect card. Look at him. Best not caught pelacking by the wurm.

#magicthegathering

pointB,

@katerberg Shandalar to me falls into the realm of Fallout, where I'm certain the game is excellent but I simply do not have the patience for games designed that long ago without modern quality of life features. That, and my primary gaming platform is the Steam Deck, and I can't imagine trying to fight with ancient 32-bit windows 98 libraries on top of Proton...

I think the consensus is that the #CommanderMasters precons are reasonably well-designed and interesting decks that aren't worth what Wizards is asking for them. I thought the same thing about the LTR precons, although they get closer to justifying their price tags.

What's the highest price you'd pay for these? Maybe $65? There are some great reprints.

Got into an argument about #commandermasters, just needed to thought dump.

Magic is a fun game, and it's a fun hobby. It would be nice if CMM were cheaper, but if you don't want to pay for the set or you can't afford the cards, you can just play different cards, or proxy them. If you want specific, official, Wizards sanctioned cards, they cost what they cost. Commander's a casual format, you can play with the loose cards in your bulk pile and have fun.

I'm gonna draft CMM.
#magicthegathering

pointB,

@tapandrollgames I think describing Wizards' business practices as price gouging isn't super fair. If any specific Magic product is too expensive for you, I don't think your quality of life is meaningfully impacted. I can still go to my LGS and draft the latest standard set, and get several hours of fun for $15-20. There's so many Magic products now, and most of them are as accessible as ever.

pointB,

@tapandrollgames I already have the $45 of store credit bookmarked for the first draft, I might even do two.

I think the primary function of masters sets is to make staples more accessible by reducing the price of singles. I hope CMM does that, but its possible the high sealed price makes the impact less than previous masters sets. That being said, I am not concerned about Commander accessibility, given the casual nature and proxy-friendliness. CMM can just be fun to be a success.

Hi there! When content creators, especially Magic creators, get paid or otherwise rewarded for making cool content: this is a good thing. It helps us to keep getting cool content.

Don’t harass creators for being rewarded for adding to and creating cool stuff for the community.

pointB,

@TolarianCollege I agree with this sentiment, is this in reference to some drama I'm not aware of or an experience you've had?

pointB, to MagicTheGathering

Didn't do one of these when I made the account, but now seems like a good time for an #introduction.

I'm pointB, a Reddit (and Twitter) refugee after they shut down third-party apps. I'm mostly here for #magicthegathering content, but other potentially relevant things are:

Have no real desire to go back on #reddit despite the #RedditBlackout being technically over. I wonder if the admins haven’t quite clocked how long 48 hours is when you’re talking about breaking people’s daily/hourly browsing habits. Reddit (via Apollo of course) was my default go-to for downtime, doomscrolling, etc and just a couple of days without the option has made it seem less appealing to go to in the first place

pointB,

@Graham_LRR @niphette looking forward to seeing you around here :) I'm in the same boat, I'll use reddit for r/sysadmin and the other things related to my job, but Infinity for Reddit made it usable on my phone for my personal interests. I hope if other significant community members like you and Prof keep ending up here, I'll see more of the community at large migrate.

Frankly surprised/impressed by how many subreddits have actually gone dark today.
As a staunch Apollo user and someone who doesn’t like assholes: Good.

@Graham_LRR Uninstalled my third-party reddit app on Friday. I'll miss r/magicthecirclejerking, but I'll do my part, even if there's n
