Threads released their API for devs to check it out before the API release at the end of June.

Am I missing something since there’s no direct upload option for media files in their API?

A 2-day just ended. It was my first and I really enjoyed the demos and discussions during the unconference.

So many talented people building Fediverse solutions and thinking about the decentralised future of public Internet.

Here’s a speed demo of Nootti from the first day

”Hungary and Russia worked together during the 2020 Slovak elections to help the Slovak government stay in power, all at the request of Slovakia’s then-prime minister, Peter Pellegrini. Today, the same man is the front-runner to become Slovakia’s next president (the first and second rounds of the country’s presidential election will be held on March 23 and April 6, respectively).”

I have seen the downsides of the Quote Post feature on Threads lately. There it is in even wider, in constant use, because there is no shares shown on your profile.

Quoting a post often puts others in a spotlight and not always in very flattering way. I have made that mistake myself as well. It doesn’t feel good if you criticize someone this way and people start slandering and it’s out of your control. I sometimes feel like a bully using it.

So if/when we ever get a Quote Post functionality here on Mastodon, I hope it will be different. Perhaps in this case the problem is Threads and the algorithm and not the feature itself though.

petri,

@rolle It’s not the feature but the people. There are always ways to go around limitations. Screen capture is another way to do a quote-post if the will is there.

”The Kremlin’s messaging has an extraordinary reach: In the first year of the Ukraine war alone, posts by Kremlin-linked accounts were viewed at least 16 billion times by Westerners.

Every one of those views is part of a full-spectrum attack against the West designed not just to undermine support for Ukraine, but to actively damage Western democratic systems.”

”RBI made €1.3bn in profit in Russia last year, where it employed 9,942 people in 490 retail branches.

It also took part in a Russian scheme on loan perks for Russian military conscripts…

RBI is one of eight leading EU banks still in Russia.

The others are: Dutch lender ING, Germany's Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank, Hungary's OTP Bank, Italy's Intesa SanPaolo and Unicerdit, and Sweden's SEB.”

I’ve been building a cross-posting tool for the last few months.

Here’s a quick screen capture demo of how I did the previous post. It works on iOS, iPad and also M-series Macs.

It’s still an early build but if you want to test here’s a Testflight link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/LDJGX8QV

”Authorities in Beijing have introduced a rating system for China's version of TikTok, Douyin, that will penalize users who stream content deemed by censors to violate a strict moral code…

Sanctions will be imposed once a streamer's points dip below 70, with punishments ranging from function restrictions to a complete ban on streaming once the point count drops down to zero.”

Mastodon ticks all the boxes feature-wise and culture-wise, but it's still not enough for many people. It's different reasons for many, but I've come to a conclusion these are the two main reasons:

  1. Not enough mutuals here when compared to other platforms (by expertise, hobby, cultural or geographical location)
  2. Not attractive enough by default (by UI, onboarding, the general consensus)

For myself I've fixed both, for 1 I have lots of geek mutuals here and for a techie this is the place to be. There are also just enough Finnish people to make it feel like worthwhile. For 2 I have and apps like Mona.

However, for most of the people 1 and 2 are really issues. I can't continue to downplay it. If it works for me, it will not for many. People are not generally interested in hacks and nitpicks.

We can always reply "good riddance, we don't need them here" but is that constructive? We should instead focus on making the Fediverse more approachable. Even more than before.

petri,

@rolle There’s also to option to embrace the fragmentation and decentralisation and accept the fact that people are in different platforms.

How can you still interact with them?

AcitivityPub bridges are easy with certain platforms and harder with others. I don’t see going back to the era where it was just FB, later Twitter (and IG) mainly without alts.

Now, its just shattered networks, and hopefully less centralised services.

Web of Trust approach puts the burden on the client (user) by active selection/muting, or you can do data crunching.

petri,

@kkarhan ‘cause pre-mining?

petri,

@kkarhan It’s hard to find a good use case for blockchains.

Nostr does not need a blockchain. Farcaster has it but it brings costs and some other issues with it by adding complexity and choke points.

Bsky approaching 1m users that have posted

https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats

petri,

@Setok Yes. The growth has come in phases where X has done something massively “interesting”. Bsky is also still on invite-only stage so it’s not even open for all.

It lacks videos and some other features but I would say it’s main appeal: an alt. to X.

Why is Masto not able to bank on it is a really good question. My main guess is the architecture of separate instances that do not integrate into a smooth UX. The “a guest on somebody else’s computer” is too tech point for many.

petri,

@Setok @lari @IceCubesApp Masto has a history and APIs etc. It’s a choice and control issue. It was always created as an alt place and not a popular place as far as I understood. This is how it looks also.

Funnily enough, the only responses for the same post I get here and Nostr. Bksy and X are completely silent. Not a single reaction 😂

petri,

@Setok @lari @IceCubesApp Threads had the perfect opportunity but they blew it by blocking the EU. Most of the people would have shifted to it despite it being Meta. It was the most vanilla.

But by locking it to your Insta account and some of the other choices made it miss its chance.

petri,

@danjac @Setok @lari @IceCubesApp True but I small team can do a lot or if you have a open-source community you should get stuff done.

Especially, when the basics are in place already.
