So the new Instagram text thing is reported to have ActivityPub support and instead of being happy at all the new labor that could potentially be coming to the standard, Mastodon people are now actively encouraging instances to not federate with any of that stuff. K.

@film_girl Moderation. The thing you're choosing to describe as "instance admins [blocking] whatever they want for any reason they want" is literally just moderation. It doesn't "hurt your users" - it helps us all, as intended (and I say that as a creator of fetish porn). It's why I haven't had hate speech pushed into my feed every day like I DID on Facebook and Twitter. Those extremely skilled engineers Facebook has get paid to shape web tech for investor profits, not us. THAT hurts your users.

@film_girl Well, I hope you don't get your wish - I love my mods and the work they do for us. I don't want to have to be subjected to every terf and nazi and illegal porn pop-up instance in order to block it myself - that's the user experience I came to mastodon to get away from. But you can have that if you want, by joining or starting an instance with lax or anti-moderation policies. My instance won't federate with yours, which may or may not be what you want, but it's definitely what I want.

    @analogfusion Nah, not for real. Just a very misleading headline - all that they're reporting is that people taking udemy courses about chatgpt increased more as a percentage in the last quarter than people taking udemy courses about other things. Hardly surprising given all the recent buzz and the presumably miniscule number of people who were taking udemy courses about it last year.

    @analogfusion and even that assumes that employable skills are the only reason people have for learning. Could be they're just interested in what all the fuss is about and want to know more.
