Indeed. Retraining and the extra time using a new tool is a short term loss for what should be a long term gain. The transition will always suck.

I am sure you can, but you will likely get better performance from a mini PC for roughly the same price.

87€ does not include case, power supply, or microSD. Realistically close to 120€ to get a working system and for that kind of money yes you can get a newish Celeron powered PC with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD/NVME.

I am doing conversion from Canadian Dollar so my calculations and what is actually available in Europe might be off a bit. It is totally possible here though.

Slackware(1995?), Yggdrasil, Redhat/Fedora/Mandrake, SuSE, Debian/Ubuntu/Mint

Probably some others I have forgotten, and there was a lot of back and forth at various times but I settled on Debian based because at the time APT was the best package manager. I mostly use Mint or straight Debian now because familiarity makes it the simplest for me after all these years.

not Linux but also Solaris, SunOS, & AIX

Can anyone help me with a problem with Photoshop on Linux (Lutris) (feddit.nl)

I managed to get Photoshop CS6 installed on Lutris, using the script on their site. The problem is however, that whenever I open a file (doesn’t matter if it is jpg, png, psd, etc.) the screen remains black. I can see the picture in the Layer thumbnail, but not in the main work-area. Does anyone know what the problem might be?...

So this is not running Windows apps on linux, but displaying them on your linux desktop. You still need to run Windows in a VM.

Before I quit Reddit (when Bacon Reader died) I had already curtailed my commenting because of this. It seemed that any time I tried to make a thoughtful comment on a even slightly contentions subject I ended up in a pointless argument with someone who had poor reading comprehension. It was disheartening to realize that while I was agonizing over every word I put into my comment in an attempt to clearly explain my thought, the same courtesy would not be extended by the people mis-reading it. I started to think people were just scanning comments for keywords to get angry about then telling me that I was ignorant of a subject I knew a great deal about or a reactionary child when I am 50 IRL. Commenting became a burden and it lead to a decline in the quality of conversation as more and more thoughtful commenters found that burden too great.

IIRC part of that issue was that the Windows version of the same computer was cheaper because of MS licensing. For Linux nerds at the time it made more sense to buy the Windows version and do what they had always done, reinstall with the Linux of their choice.

green peppers

The worst pepper. Everything you add them to just ends up tasting like green bell pepper, which taste terrible. Yellow, Orange, or Red? Magnificent.

Would you like to do this vitally important job that requires travel, training, hard labour, living rough, and includes heightened risk of serious injury all for minimum wage?

Seems the answer is obvious.

pbjamm,
@pbjamm@beehaw.org avatar

Poetic license.

It is not actually minimum wage, but it is no where near far enough from it.

If we give it a few more generations wealth will certainly begin to trickle down.

The mistake was creating bad publicity, not asking for free labour.
