Has @pluralistic's term "#enshittification" become enshittified? Discuss.

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@tante That's definitely true. What I'm still wondering about though is if this "broadening catch-all fuzzify" qualifies as enshittification in the original, narrow sense? Or only in the vague enshittified-enshittification sense?

I am looking for some visual programming environment that allows not only small processing nodes (like NodeRED) but that also includes objects with state. Think NodeRED but with a another dimension that contains objects that the flows interact with.

Anyone knows something like this?

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@tante PD or one of it's one derivatives? If you need something more stateful than PD's nested patches afford you can hack in components with Python (maybe other languages too?) but the API for that is rather obscure.

Why is there not video of this??!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@ernie Did you find/get the video in the end?

Did you know:

chown scy: some_file

(note the colon after scy) changes the owner of some_file to scy, and the group to scy's primary group. No need to look it up or type it out.

#Linux #CLI #chown

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@scy
What happens to the group if you do the same without a colon? (I guess I always thought what you describe was default behavior.)

You’d think that in 2024 you’d have an easier way to enter a true minus sign glyph (−) instead of a dash (-) in Linux.

And this isn’t just one for typography geeks either, it’s an accessibility issue.

Imagine you have a minus button in a web form. A screenreader would read it as a dash button unless you used the proper character. (The workaround, of course, is to use aria-label.)

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@aral
Is "true minus" the same as en-dash or yet another one?

Hey #37C3, my fully automated puppet theater has an electronics emergency!
During setup one of the stepper drivers fried itself and now I need urgent replacement. Can anybody help me out with a TMC2130 (or compatible), ideally 2023-12-22 morning or otherwise on 2023-12-27? Details below.

Please boost for reach!

The board is an MKS Gen v1.4 RAMPS 1.4. Until now I ran 5× TMC2130 in SPI mode and I need sensorless homing on only 4 of them – so any compatible drop-in for the 5th could work. Getting the same configuration as depicted replaced would be ideal, but I'm happy if someone can suggest a reasonable alternative to solving this.
Adjusting the headers and adding a heatsink should be solvable here.

I couldn't find any short-term online shopping, that's why I'm turning to y'all. Or can someone recommend a store in #Hamburg that would, like, have them in stock?

Also, if you have any ideas who to visit at #37C3 who might have one and who isn't following Mastodon, give me location infos/DECTs/... please!

The summary "LAST HYPE vs CURRENT HYPE" really nails it in @parismarx Worst Person in Tech. I wonder if we can apply this title more broadly:

LAST HYPE vs CURRENT HYPE – Which emitted more CO²e?
LAST HYPE vs CURRENT HYPE – Which appeared in more LinkedIn bios?
LAST HYPE vs CURRENT HYPE – Which burnt more capital?
LAST HYPE vs CURRENT HYPE – Which got more uncritical press coverage?
LAST HYPE vs CURRENT HYPE – Which delivered on less of its promises?

First onslaught of weird fascist trolls here last night. What a pathetic bunch of losers.

No idea what triggered them though.

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@tante
"Here" as in our instance or your account specifically?
I got a bunch of fascist trolling too yesterday, but assumed it was a normal – nonetheless terrible – part of the reactions to anything with reach, even on the Fediverse.

neopostmodern,
@neopostmodern@tldr.nettime.org avatar

@tante
Gotcha.
It got me wondering if our instance applies any lists to preemptively block instances? If yes, do you know where one finds out which? If not, what is the reasoning why this isn't such a good idea as it first seems?

Reactionaries getting trashed by contextual facts is an underappreciated form of comedy.

Since this is getting a bit of attention: if you appreciate one-upping reactionary architecture please help us rebuild the Palast der Republik in Berlin, a gem of eastern modernism and important heritage site; currently replaced by some castle replica housing a museum of stolen heritage 👉 @palast_jetzt / https://palast.jetzt

    New from 404 Media: Instagram has been auto-translating phrases that included "Palestinian" into phrases that say "terrorist". Instagram now ‘sincerely apologizes’ in a statement to us https://www.404media.co/instagram-palestinian-arabic-bio-translation/

    To be honest, I thought it was a paywall too. Maybe the wall could explain itself better? "Member" sounds very much like payment.

    So I spotted this weird device on Amazon, and it just made me realize how depressing work-from-home spying has gotten. It is literally a machine that you place on your trackpad that rocks your cursor, and makes it seem like you’re working. https://amzn.to/3rVYVA1
