Let's talk about my role as "perspective-bringer."

I think I am wasting my time responding to each new outrage by offering explanations and perspective.

Let's do some math.

(I know you all, and almost all of you are better at math than I am 😂 )

Editing back because I found it: only 15% of people like seeing social media posts about politics.

Just over 66.6 % of the voters voted in 2020.

People who are highly engaged vote in high numners. . .

@Teri_Kanefield "Whenever a half dozen people ask me the same question [...]": nice illustration that the supposed faults of social media are either originated or amplified by traditional media, as nothing else makes so many people believe the exact same thing as the same time.

As Yochai Benkler, Robert Faris and Hal Roberts found in #NetworkPropaganda:

@gunchleoc That's for legislative proposals usually. There's always some ongoing consultation you can use though, for example right now https://citizens.ec.europa.eu/participation/processes/tackling-hatred-in-society/f/39/?toggle_translations=true seems active.

The #coop which owns the #EuropeanSleeper company is raising 3 M€ in capital to fund the #NightTrain service from #Brussels to #Barcelona and #Prague.

I bought a few shares because their success would help me #StayGrounded. (Also, how cool is it to own a #train [lease, fraction of]?)

It's a high risk investment. No profits expected for years with favourable track prices. No membership/voting rights under 26 k€ invested. Check bylaws etc. in "legal" and "community" tabs.

Social issues require social solutions. Technology alone never suffices.

Wannabe #Wikipedia "competitors" always failed to learn this simple lesson. Now proprietary "alternatives" to the #fediverse make the same mistake.

"#Mastodon is thriving: new users stick with it, finding it extraordinarily easy and delightful to use"

What do you say? That's not the headline you've read?

Arguably, of some 3 million new users in November-December, 2 million were still active a month later. That would be a new user retention some four times higher than Twitter's on Android (16 %), as we just learnt from Similarweb.
https://www.similarweb.com/blog/insights/social-media-news/threads/

Where are the UX experts trying to figure out this incredible success?

#FediStats

the-federation.info chart showing total registered users went from about 4600k in October to 7700k at the end of December, and added 300k more in January (which is the minimum amount to be decremented from the MAU of the end of January for comparison with one month before). The figure hopefully doesn't include daystorm.netz.org which starts its stats in May.

@stefan Also note that favorites and boosts decay over time because the so-called "data retention" setting deletes them.

Tarras Valley has most of the ingredients I'd expect for carbon sinks preservation, including a focus on peatland restoration and a pragmatic decision to cut down mature commercial forests. They delayed action on the sheep farm side: I wonder how long that's sustainable.

Does anybody know of reasonably efficient workflows to bulk upload bibliographic metadata to ? Adding items via GUI is annoyingly repetitive and slow. Reconciling and uploading via is probably one possibility, but that's not trivial. Has anybody come across tutorials or descriptions of workflows? There are also tools such as "Author Diesambiguation" (https://author-disambiguator.toolforge.org/) that would have to be combined with other services. Help appreciated!

nemobis,

@awinkler Ok, so it's a small import which can be done with personal accounts without too much bureaucracy.

Assuming we're talking about books...

Personally I'd start from an #Inventaire library and see what happens. I'm not sure what's the status of import/export, but it will reduce the chances of wasting time on duplicate work.
