Outside of the occasional snarky comment on shenanigans or sharing of an article or two, I won't be posting much on the Alberta Election.

However, please watch this brief video by Barry Morishita of the Alberta Party.

His words resonate here. Though we need to get rid of Danielle Smith, there is no accountability or governing effectiveness if we ping-pong between two parties.

A minority govt with a moderate third party is progress.

@x0darkpadr3 While I can agree with your desired outcome of "having more viable parties" I don't see any way this doesn't just suck progressive votes away from the only actual alternative to dooming the province to more #ucp
#politics #abvotes

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 I think the problem is way, way deeper than that.
I don't know what "policy screwup" you're imagining, but nobody knows or talks about any policies.

It's orange vs. blue.

Ask anyone who "hates" some party to name a single policy (of that or any other party).

@x0darkpadr3 (Also, cool: but fix it after this election please ;)

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 I really don't see how yet another "center-right" party helps any of this. We need some actually-left style parties if you want to expand the acceptable debate in #abpoli ("Overton Window")
#politics #abpoli

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@x0darkpadr3 The NDP is also centrist.
(What do you think is different about the Alberta Party?)

There's no "left" in Alberta currently: there's the NDP + Alberta party milling somewhere around the center and a far-right UCP trying to turn us into Florida.

@x0darkpadr3 What is a "definitely left" policy ever held by the Alberta NDP?

I don’t understand, can someone please enlighten me?
I keep seeing statements about how the hard part of Mastodon is figuring out what server to join.
I see things in my feed from many different servers. So why does it make a difference which one I belong to?

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@wanderinghermit The "local" timeline (which is just toots from your instance), and how admins do their thing (e.g. policies, how diligent they are, what other instances are blocked, etc)

Thank you to @bragefuglseth and the folks in the App Icon Design team ( https://matrix.to/#/#appicondesign:gnome.org ) for help designing a new icon for Phosh Antispam!

We are looking to possibly rename the app, so if you have ideas, they are welcome!

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@bragefuglseth @bjoessi @kop316 I've always found "made up names" to be good for at least search visibility. (But can be harder to remember).

I know naming is pretty arbitrary, but do the Gnome HIGs have like "further justification and/or discussion" anywhere? Do they get translated, or is it literally "Stoplight" in all languages?

(Icon looks great, BTW!)

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@bragefuglseth I do like how clean and more-consistent the newest GNOME things are for sure. And yeah, in a lot of places "any guidelines at all" will improve things :) as far as consistency.

Alberta is about to enter another election campaign and one thing that's actually not all that easy to find is...

... the candidates!

Seriously, it's actually kinda hard to find -- all in one place, online -- who's running where, with links to their websites/bios, etc.

I hope to make that a lot easier with a series of interactive tools that we will launch on Monday at cbc.ca/calgary

Here's a sneak preview...

A screenshot of an interactive map of electoral districts in Calgary and the candidates in one district, Calgary-Buffalo, highlighted.

@robsonfletcher Aren't we just reduced to caring about 2 (or maybe 3) colours now?

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@robsonfletcher Sorry, I was being snarky ;) but I always appreciate projects like this that provide a party-agnostic way to get pertinent election information!

Finally on Bl*esky. It's clearly very early days. Kinda meh so far, but we'll give it time.

Definitely prefer Mastodon at this point. :)

@kevinlovestech I'm not giving that billionaire a second chance, haha

(In any case, even if it was "just ActivityPub + mastodon" that wouldn't change my opinion much)

if any of the gpt enthusiasts had ever said “this tool allows people who speak english as a second language to lower the language barrier in work and in seeking employment”, i would have said “sounds great!”

but not one of them has said that to me ever. not even once.

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@kboyd @ghorwood I'm not on the fence: it's completely irresponsible to have been deployed. On the order of "hey, look, we invented nukes, order now!"

I can't imagine how someone looking at 2023's Internet decided: "what we need here is even more plausible-sounding but wrong text".

(Although I can still agree there are positive uses)

This month, #Lisbon #Portugal will become the latest European city to bar through-traffic from its city center.

The plan, to be introduced for a three-month trial period on April 26, will see cars barred from driving through (but not from driving to) the heart of Lisbon’s downtown.

This is looney. Jack is proposing micropayments because crypto. He’s pitching this as if we haven’t already been down the micropayments path before with traditional currency.

One of the huge problems with micropayments is because it forces the user to make a disproportionately high cognitive effort for the value being exchanged. It’s untenable to keep expending $10 of effort in order to exchange $.10 of value.

#crypto #twitter

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@isagalaev @sysop408 That's basically "Flattr" no?

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@isagalaev @sysop408 I don't trust my browser very much, but okay. (Maybe what you're suggesting is more like "Brave" then).

I don't see how you'd avoid "an account" (somewhere, somehow) if the goal is to transfer money to content creators...

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@isagalaev @sysop408 The "account" I mean is the part where the $0.0002 or whatever gets transferred to someone else. How does that happen with browser?
(That's one important part that Flattr is doing).

meejah,
@meejah@mastodon.social avatar

@isagalaev @sysop408 Browsers already store credit-cards. That's not the problem; the problem is that doing a $0.002 CC transaction isn't even possible; this is the part Flattr (to keep using that example) solves: you do one CC transaction for the month, and they distribute to creators.
So without a solution to this part, "stuff it in a browser" isn't going to help (...and in principal I agree, lets use the platform "everyone" is already using).
