It baffles me how cookie banners label the decline button ‘No, thanks’. Who in their right mind would be that chill?

— Hey, we want to track you and sell your data
— No, thanks!

It should clearly be labelled ‘wtf no’

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@kytta At least some of them have a "no" button in the menu without any additional clicks. In some bad cookie banners you have to open a sub-menu, scroll pass 300 "interested" companies and then there is a nearly white label on a white background, font size 5 which says "no"

Still no fan of NPM. It costs me sooo many hours which are wasted just because the tooling is bad and does not work as intended..
I mean: Why does the update of a minor dependency causes typescript to fail for a random issue in node_modules? Thats's not my project, not my folder, not my content.. I don't even use the classes or methods which are criticized.

I guess the inventor is paid by "hours of other people wasted"

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

To be honest: I love package managers. NuGet has shown how awesome it is. Python is fine, too.
But NPM bugs me..

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@amunizp Sure that may happen, too. In my case it was an undefined class in the package itself. But the file contained the class and defined it via export and so on..
As I upgraded Typescript from 4.x to 5.x I got many more issues and error messages. Even the original project without a package upgrade could not be built anymore.
It's nasty stuff like this which I have sooo often. And this frustrates so much over time. Especially when you know e.g. Nuget and .NET

Finding new docker containers to add to my collection is going to be my new addiction. I'll probably self host things I never even think to use just because I can

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I know the feeling. Using docker is so much more convenient compared to "classic" virtual machines where you need to install and snapshot things when you want to have a clean system after you are done or don't need tool XY anmore

Is this what the Nextcloud app for Linux is supposed to look like?

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I guess it depends on your Desktop environment. I am using Cinnamon (dark theme) but the background is white and the text is black. I thought there is no dark theme (but this "dark theme" has a very bad contrast)

This summary sounds interesting: "Reading was protective of cognitive function in later life"

I didn't read it yet (just found it and wanted to share). For me this supports my general assumption: When you challenge your body (here: brain) it will stay healthy and become better over time.

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu I guess you're right. I was using the word "challenge" in the sense of "use" or "training".

> "Give enough to keep it active"
sounds good.

I see that my wording may be misleading :) Thank you for that hint

Rant time

Like you go to unsubscribe from an email list

  1. In this day and age you shouldn't have to type your email address in

  2. I clicked unsubscribe in the email, I don't want to be asked. Are you sure?

  3. While unsubscribing a pop-up when they shouldn't come up asking If I want to be kept up to date!

  4. And you're sorry for me going. I don't give a #$@& about

  5. Why is there a re subscribe button

Thank you for reading my rant if you go this far ... 💋

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@melissabeartrix There is a better variant: You have to uncheck 10 checkboxes manually (type of subscribe messages) and save your settings. There is no "uncheck all" button or something equal to make it easier

Now I understand why I read so many "HP sucks" tweets yesterday here in Mastodon.
So I guess you shouldn't buy anything from HP anymore, right?
Especially products like printers or ink shouldn't have a forced subscription model

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@elaterite I just worked for some companies which ordered their IT equipment from HP (Notebooks, Docking station, etc).
On a personal level I had no contact with HP yet. But besides HP there are some companies where you are forced to use a subscription model (usually software).
To limit your hardware is a very bad idea. You buy it. You own it.

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@elaterite TBH: Some companies have a fair subscription: Fair in the sense when you own a subscription for some time the major version XY can be used even without a subscription but no newer version (auto update). But yes: I like the good old "buy version X" much more. Especially for SW you just use a few times per year where you don't need the latest one

I love it to change my password on a regular basis like every 3 months. The strength of the password increases every time: It becomes longer, more complex and I add a bunch of special characters and numbers to make it as secure as possible.

I wonder why so many people are criticizing regular password changes. It motivates me, to create a better and more complex one. Every single time.

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@Anachron @brodriguesco Thank you both for your comments. I hope the irony in the initial post was not overseen.

I think the same: Using a password manager and a good length and complexity helps you much.
My post was written in the context of a Windows-Password where you have no PW-manager during your login.. And in this cases it becomes anything but secure

mbeddedDev,
@mbeddedDev@fosstodon.org avatar

@brodriguesco @Anachron That's true. I was thinking about to add something like a sarcasm tag or something but I thought it's exaggerated enough to be seen :D

Me: What work?

Boss: From my emails!

Boss: Why?

Me: The IT security training said typos and unexpected requests were clues to spot phishing.

“Scrollbars are becoming a problem”

The current state of scrollbars is, on the face of it, objective evidence that the people who run tech do not give a single solitary fuck about usability or UX https://artemis.sh/2023/10/12/scrollbars.html

mbeddedDev,

@baldur Totally agree on "But the scrollbars are getting smaller and this is increasingly becoming a problem."

Or what's bad too: When they vanish and you don't know (e.g.) how many text of an article is left

is there a free software for windows that will let you record your screen? trying to see what are my options to show how to do something by actually doing it and converting it to video.

@Rajiv I like OBS very much. It's mostly designed for streams via Twitch but you can use it for recording only, as well. And it's cross platform
