Okay I wrote this python code so long ago that python 3.5 was new, and... wow so much has changed since then, it's going to be a trip to catch up.

@danderson I don't know why, but I get serious sweats looking at how much that language has changed, and I haven't regularly used it since version 2.X.

As an immigrant I get annoyed when people say American food is bad coz it’s only burgers.

First, immigrants exist and our Americanized foods are glorious (I’m aware burgers also came from immigrants, but that’s not what those people think)

Second, all burgers are glorious (incl vegan burgers and fast food burgers)

@skinnylatte @Alon my daughter could safely walk to school as a five-year-old unaccompanied, and there’s marginal risk for gun violence (esp. in schools). From a free-range parent’s perspective, this is hard to beat. It’s not all roses, but there is a kernel of truth to the positive stereotypes around some QoL matters. And the on-work/off-work culture is a lot more healthy than the continuous grind culture I came from. The place forced me to slow down a lot.

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@skinnylatte @Alon The real negatives I see:

  1. stratified education outcomes (high school, vocational, and university split). Those in first two often lack basic liberal arts exposure (same in U.S., but college-first dampened the trades for the worse).

  2. economic contraction in some of the countries (long-term declining standard of living). Is it really noticeable or more of an economist on-paper thing? Hard to say.

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@skinnylatte @Alon 3. hyper-local, but interpupil conflict resolution seems absent in school (not facilitated by school). This has been a real head-scratcher. I wish the teachers were a little more proactive with feedback to parents versus waiting.

(Clarification on no. 2: I think liberal arts exposure is key for well-rounded and effective citizenship in society. The risks and costs of the lack of that exposure are intangibly real.)

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@Alon @skinnylatte The stratification I am referring to is less about economic outcomes but how well each layer could hypothetically be prepared to be a citizen of a pluralist democracy (think Karl Popper‘s paradox). Liberal Arts are a good collective immune system strengthener here (not foolproof though).

To Germany, I recall its productivity and economy are shrinking in recent years. That’s the one I would be careful about lionizing.

As a part of a learning exercise, I have been trying my hand at writing a parser for a local data format in Rust. It’s been interesting and enlightening. I do wish Rust had a more robust standard library (I don’t want to adjudicate third-party crates for batteries included functionality).

No ; thank you!

(I am familiar with the format like the back of my hand, and could recite an efficient implementation in Go using the standard library alone.)

knapjack, to random

@robpike Sorry if you've answered this before, but where did you get your design inspiration for the style and color palette in 8½? I just reread the paper and it talks about the technical design but not the graphic design, and I remember you talking about design during the recent notch incident.

Also, really, Jean-Paul Belmondo? The Man from Rio? 😂

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@robpike @knapjack How about the (IMO iconic) Plan 9 color scheme (and that of the applications in its ecosystem)? What’s the origin story there?

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@robpike @knapjack Rob, may I ask for your opinion on “dark mode” that so many web sites and U/I toolkits have implemented in recent years?

(As a tangent but asked in the context of your response stating the use of using soft contrast colors found in nature. I’m sure you’d have interesting opinions in light of that.)

Why are 🚆 routes like
Paris - Bruxelles 🇧🇪
Paris - Zürich 🇨🇭
Paris - Barcelona 🇪🇸
so damned expensive?

It is NOT (in the main) because of track access charges

It is because supply is too low, and there is neither the public accountability / state owned railway ethos to increase capacity, and NOR is there a rival to the state incumbent to compete

Paris - Lille uses most of same track as to Bruxelles, but is much cheaper - because national accountability
Paris - Milano better because competition

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@jon Paris–Zürich on TGV Lyria had been significantly more frequent. It never recovered post-pandemic, and the price is often eye-watering.

In which my son asks me how to load classes dynamically in Java, and I need to deal with Maven, ClassLoaders and all that stuff.

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@isotopp Dynamic class loading in Java is the road to pain.

It is marked with signs from the language and virtual machine specification written in the blood of those who had to interpret their verbiage.

It is lined with the bones of those who attempted to thrust runtime class generation onto others.

@_dm Given how large the Standort is (but also how small in relative terms), I have a hard time thinking that its growth could have attributed for to a significant rise in Aufenthalter.

Let's suppose the Google Schweiz Standort grew by some order of magnitude of thousands in that period. Let's say each worker who came brought a spouse and a child (gross exaggeration). That's hardly a dent in the +100'000 delta since 2015 — unless we are talking order of tens of thousands.

matt,
@matt@proud.social avatar

@_dm Absolutely. The interesting thing is hearing folks from the Standort actually talking in all seriousness that they are responsible for this uptick. Like, folks, have you done the math at all? There's no way at all.

As for the employees in public. Jesus. Put away the fucking badges. Zürich is the real Mountain View, but that doesn't mean you have to wear your badge out in public like you do on Castro St. It ain't a flex; you just look like a maladjusted person — auffällig at that.

There was a group of five 11–12-year-old boys on a VBZ tram doing a LAN party on their laptops.

If they only knew how easy they have it these days.

    Nuked Signal from my phone. I barely use it, and the application silently began to hostilely intercept the native iOS telephone CallKit dialing intents with no way of disabling it.

    This is the final — big — straw I’ve had with this product. Between flaky as fuck device coupling for desktop and using Electron, I couldn’t shed a tear for this P.O.S. Bye!

    Tesla’s factory in Grünheide, east of Berlin:

    • gets a free passenger railway shuttle train, financed by Tesla
    • that’ll run at least 30x a day
    • even non-employees can use it
    • it’ll use diesel trains 🤦‍♂️
    • the stated reason? To reduce road congestion in Erkner!
