An open-source federated Etsy alternative to help people leverage the Fediverse to promote and sell their goods and services.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Current project: figuring out carts, making sure you can save a cart for a particular shop, and making sure you can purchase from shops on other instances. The prototype won't be federated yet, but we're trying to design it in from the get-go.

Another update for you all!

We're looking into some funding options for #MagpieMarket and have set up a page on #LiberaPay for anyone interested in providing financial contributions while we explore other avenues. These will help cover the cost when we eventually spin up a dev instance, and help us get anyone working on the project compensated (hopefully fairly) for their time. @amthecoat can speak more about what we're looking into if you have any questions.

Officially pivoting to for our backend! The repo should be updated to reflect that soon.

Quick miscellaneous update: If you see -🧥 at the end of a post, it means our lead dev, amthecoat, made the post. We realized it might be confusing with two of us contributing to the conversations here, so his posts will be marked and mine will not.

Update: It has been determined that Django is not actually a good fit for this project. NodeJS is currently being explored as an alternative.

@JeffersonBledsoe yes, there is! Feel free to hop into our Matrix chat room. The main reason we're switching away from Django was it was becoming too restrictive for the features we wanted to add, but our lead dev can tell you more.

@JeffersonBledsoe Just to add, looking into NodeJS is an exploration. Given that we are currently working on a prototype, the goal is not just to create the platform with a base set of features, but to determine what underlying technology we will use that will allow us to have a sustainable project in regards to usability, maintainability, and feature addition.

Wow, it's been a while! Just wanted to give a few updates:

First, we have a new person in charge of social media! Hi, I'm amthecoat's (the lead developer) fiancée, Minniewheat. I'll be taking over this aspect of things so he can focus on the programming side of things. He'll still be in charge of the Matrix room, and will reply to questions on here, but I'll be doing most of the progress updates.

@magpiemarket@fosstodon.org avatar

Speaking of which, he's been helping his dad renovate part of his parents' house the last few months, so progress has been slow, but there has been progress! You can now (almost, hasn't been pushed to the repo yet) add and edit product listings, with everything but images. Image uploading is currently broken, but look forward to more frequent updates!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who's followed, asked questions, given feedback, shared resources, and shown interest in #magpiemarket. It means a lot, and makes it even more apparent for the need of quality online marketplace alternatives.

Just saw that #Etsy has had three articles about how they mistreat their sellers in as many days. As an independent #artist myself, I've been struggling to find purchase (and purchasers) on the platform, which is why I started building #magpiemarket - a #federated Etsy-alternative. These articles just go to show how much we need a new space that helps #artists rather than uses them. Please #boost this to help us spread the word.

BBC article headline titled "Etsy U-turn in row over withholding seller's money". Posted 19 hours ago when the screenshot was taken (August third, 2023).

By the way, the plan for cashflow on Magpie Market is to use Stripe, with each individual shop having their own Stripe account. This way, shop owners will have full control of their funds. We also plan to build in Stripe Tax to make sure shop owners' sales tax is calculated correctly at the time of purchase.

magpiemarket,
@magpiemarket@fosstodon.org avatar

@elysegrasso I've worked with Stripe before which is why I wanted to start with that for initial integration, but the plan is to have a plug-in system for the payment processing, so other options can be added.

For anyone on #codeberg who wants to show their support for a #federated #etsy alternative, starring the repo would be appreciated!

I'm working on getting Magpie Market set up on Open Collective, and stars would help with the approval process.

Please boost 🙂

@msh @tryton @squirrel I would add to that by saying it seems pretty difficult to get traffic even when you are on a platform. I think a lot of them are saturated with sellers which makes new accounts or artists who don't spend money on platform advertising get lost in the noise. It seems like unless you have a pre-established set of customers or audience, it can be difficult to get traction.

Looking for ideas regarding the #logo. I think the current one is quirky and wonderful in its own way, but in the future I'd like to change it so it fits with whatever design we go with.

Work is still being done on the frontend and backend design, the logo being something I plan to come back to later. With that said, when it's time to return to it, it would be nice to have some ideas we can play around with.

magpiemarket,
@magpiemarket@fosstodon.org avatar

Some ideas (including suggestions in replies from prior posts):

  • A single magpie
  • A birdhouse
  • A magpie with a coin
  • A coin with a magpie on it
  • More than one magpie (suggestion from @random )
  • Azure-winged magpie (suggestion from @zdl )

Hopefully I didn't miss anyone else from my original post. Feel free to repost your idea if I did!

Everything is still early stages, including having a logo, and we would love for anyone who is interested to help work on it together. We are looking for , and , , , and anyone who wants to contribute. Even boosting this will go a long way to helping us get the word out. We also have a Matrix chat:
