@universalhub Owners of unleashed dogs should be fined and publicly shamed. Unleashed dogs should be rehomed to owners who will provide a better, more structured life.

Amsterdam closed one of its busiest roads the other day and the right-wing media and politicians LOST THEIR FREAKING MINDS over it.

So obviously I had to go out and film it.

    Watching how delicate our internet stack is, in terms of implicit agreements about how websites interoperate and what happens when someone breaks one, is fascinating.

    That is, OpenAI and Google start massive text scraping and want to charge for their services; Reddit, in anger and mismanagement, respond to breaking this "gentlemen's agreement" by announcing highly restrictive and expensive API to make sure their website isn't used as a content farm for other companies to profit from. This breaks the "gentlemen's agreement" that Reddit has with its users, which is that they'll plant your walled garden if you're not such a huge dick about it, and go dark in protest. This then breaks Google's search.

    One (or two) bad actors, ignoring the actually-in-play rules and instead taking advantage for personal gain, has managed to deal a serious blow to the house of cards.

    lkngrrr,
    @lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @astatide If Reddit wasn’t such a goddamned shit show about how it managed its API contracts this wouldn’t be a problem, tho.

    Apollo: “Hi, I’m Apollo, a 3P app well known and characterized by you. May I have a data please at a previously agreed rate?”
    Reddit: “Here you go, kiddo!”

    Scumbag scraper: “I want all your data at all the TPS and no I won’t tell you what kind of user I am”
    Reddit: “How bout you just go fuck yourself instead with these 3 TPS”

    Is really how it should have gone.

    lkngrrr,
    @lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @astatide I should have been clearer that I meant to agree with you and was bitching about it WITH you rather than attempting to argue, btw :)

    randomgeek, to random

    Watching a video on recommender systems and they very astutely provide Amazon as an example of someone leaning on quantity of data to skimp on quality of algorithm.

    "THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING A REFRIGERATOR. CAN I INTEREST YOU IN ONE OF THESE OTHER FIVE REFRIGERATORS?"

    lkngrrr,
    @lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @randomgeek So I worked with that data, and the A9 folks, when I was building the original Voice features for the mobile app.

    The answer is much humbler than algorithm selection or skimping on science. It’s all about the richness of your data set.

    Shopping data are really, really sparse. And it gets even worse when it’s the Everything Store with shared accounts. Very little you can really do with it.

    The catalog data quality is an entirely different, though contributing, disaster.

    lkngrrr,
    @lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @randomgeek I hypothesize that a nonobvious contributor to those repetitive post-purchase recommendations, particularly for home improvement goods, is that there’s an awful lot of mom-and-pop contractors just buying shit in sequential quantity over time. Many of them don’t use a separate “Amazon Business” account so there’s no easy way to segregate them into a separate user bucket.

    Again, no special info on that one, just taking a guess.

    @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

    "Be kind" is not a complete thought. Be kind to who? And don't say "Be kind to everyone!🤗" Because it's not possible to be kind to everyone.

    Mr. Rogers is often held up as the example of someone that was kind to everyone. But even he roasted racists! He was unsympathetic to bigots who wanted to hold on to America's tradition of segregation. Something, something, paradox of tolerance.

    "Be kind" is often the coward's way out of speaking up for those that need defending.

    🤔How can people just ignore material science, and call it "experimental?" Like using carbon fiber for a submarine (Ocean gate), or not having a heat and noise suppression system for a rocket launch pad (SpaceX)?

    I see this as different than building a spaceship without a heat shield (Scaled Composites, Virgin Galactic). Because Scaled Composites had a (correct!) theory that didn't require ignoring the properties of the materials.

    @2CB @mekkaokereke Ignorance, wow factor.

    Carbon fiber and titanium sound much cooler and high tech than being clamped into a welded steel pipe.

    lkngrrr,
    @lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @whetstone @2CB @mekkaokereke It’s the tech funding culture written in headlines, to be honest.

    Rich dude who thinks he’s smart gets wowed by whizbang things that sound cool, brushes aside everyone who tries to convince him otherwise, then gets burned. This time he bet his own life rather than everyone else’s on it, and lost.

    Functionally safe design— like design for scale— starts with humility, thoroughness, and a dedication to the unsexy but proven.

    NGL tho, watching all you bougies lose access to your shit because your smart homes are going Maximum Overdrive is not doing anything to change my belief that I will never be an early adopter of anything tech related because those people are typically muppets with too much spare cheddar and shit like this happens to them.

    If you're gonna buy a "smart" home; just rip out the wires. Or don't, but like I'm not really crying for ya either.

    lkngrrr,
    @lkngrrr@hachyderm.io avatar

    @AnarchoNinaWrites Or be sensible and have manual, physical backups for when something shits itself. Invest in convenience, but bank on paranoia.

    Like, smart bulbs on a switched circuit that just function like normal light bulbs when not otherwise commanded.

    We do have a “smart” thermostat, but I can just rip it off the wall and put the original back on in like 15min if it bricks.

    AnarchoNinaWrites, to random

    Also, hashtags are weird; people can search them, which means they bring people to your posts. Why would you want to do that, given what "people" are usually about tho?

    @emilygorcenski Literally this.

    My favorite thing in the world is when some diptwat comes in and asks why we can’t just A/B it until we get some code right and the answer is because

    1. “You can’t just fucking hit compile and spit out a part”, per one of my HW TPMs, and
    2. that is literally industrial machinery that can maim or kill, and unless you want to end like a billionaire in a submarine we’re not fucking doing that

    ChatGPT's been publicly available for several months and despite its widespread ability and ease of use, we have not seen:

    • massive shifts in the disinformation space
    • meaningful changes in market dynamics from companies using it over companies who are not
    • at-scale changes in the workforce due to ChatGPT

    If these things were to happen, they probably would have happened by now.
