One week in, I have a few observations from my return to regular blogging:

  1. I like having my own little place on the web to write on topics I'm passionate about. (old comics, retro-computing, Linux, macOS, etc.)

  2. I appreciate the tranquility of having a website that is completely devoid of an algorithm, ads, pop-ups or other nonsense.

Looking at different distro options and I came across - does anyone use this distro? If you've used it before, is it worth diving into? The small footprint of this distro appeals to me. https://maboxlinux.org

@verge A highly tone-deaf ad. I bristled while watching it. What was Apple even thinking?

Of whom I am very proud for catching this.

I need an app that I can quickly trigger a phone ring after 1 minute, so I can get out of a face to face conversation. Please and thank you.

Is there a terminal command that will list my five last installed terminal apps? I tend to install such apps and, later, forget what the name of the app is that I installed.

I need an AI art generator that'll let me do stuff involving living people and copyrighted things.

Because developing an array of really good images of Billy Joel as a Sontaran has recently become very important for me.

It's for my work.

Name a software company you wish were still around, making cool things.

For me, it’s Broderbund.

@amoroso I remember them well. Our engineering labs used Quattro Pro when I was in school. By my memory, it was a solid spreadsheet calculation tool.

krishnadraws,

@scops good one! I agree. Having BeOS around in strong form would definitely shake up the status quo.

Nothing is what it seems:

Here’s a Mac SE/30 shell with a Pimoroni display (HDMI out), with two gutted Apple 3.5” floppy drive shells, holding assorted SSDs.

(The internals of both floppy drives are toast. The SE/30 logic board, picture tube, etc are safely stored in tupperware in my garage, looking for a new home.)

krishnadraws,
@krishnadraws@mastodon.social avatar

@paulrickards Will do. I have the whole kit and kaboodle (analog board, SE/30 logic board, floppy drive, PSU, picture tube). The picture tube has some slight burn-in. I also have the ROM and some (untested) sticks of RAM. Would like to see it being used somewhere instead of just sitting.

In February 2023, I helped @mwichary run what became the #1 tech book campaign on Kickstarter for his massive tome, Shift Happens. How did we raise over $750,000 in the campaign (and sell more copies later)? How did we deal with the expected—and surprise problems? I've detailed all that in this essay: https://glennf.medium.com/how-we-crowdfunded-750-000-for-a-giant-book-about-keyboard-history-c30e24c4022e Hard-won advice from this weathered campaign veteran.

@glennf @mwichary @a2_4am I appreciate how thorough and informative your article was.

Your article is bound to help other folks who are interested in starting their own Kickstarter campaigns. Thank you!

I don't care about your growth hacks.

I don't care what time you wake up in the morning.

I give no fucks about how many followers you have today or how many you had 6 months ago.

I don't care about your master-class, your playbook or your chatGPT PDFs.

I couldn't possibly give less of a shit about whether or not you work weekends.

I want to talk to real humans. Who talk like real humans.

The Hustle bro crap is over. It has no place in 2024.

I'm looking for recommendations for a Linux-based media server that I can use primarily for sharing photos / family movies to the TV in our house. Thanks!

krishnadraws,
@krishnadraws@mastodon.social avatar

@DigitalKrampus @adamsdesk I haven't been able to get it to work properly on Linux. I have a few options to try to get it to work, but I honestly expected it to be much easier to get up and running than what I experienced.

krishnadraws,
@krishnadraws@mastodon.social avatar

@adamsdesk @DigitalKrampus I ran into a few issues with installation. I googled around to make it through the install. But then there were other issues where my photo folder wasn't being recognized as a valid path. Turns out, I have to give my jellyfin user permissions to access said folder.
