PDX folks, do any of you have daytime dogsitting services you'd personally vouch for? Deets in following post.

I have a very sweet and human-adoring but also quite large and very unused-to-cities puppy I may need to bring in for a few days in late summer and I'll need a wrangler who can chill with him in a park for a few hours at a time.

(We're socializing him as much as possible with other dogs but he's pretty afraid of them still and will often try to cower under the nearest human butt to hide.)

Huge fan of all people, especially kids. Currently afraid of most dogs, all chickens, some delivery trucks, the neighbor’s driveway light fixture, and the moon.

Cats and crows are okay. Deer are gods.

@nk We will probably want to go full-on pro for this for a few reasons, but offer much appreciated!

@ramin His mum's an English Golden with red hair and his fence-climbing dad's allegedly a New Zealand Sheep Heading [sic] dog, which is basically a border collie with long legs, as far as I can tell?

@jasonsantamaria I think he may know things we do not

After weeks of planning, waiting, scouring, four-step protein mordanting, and dye extraction, the first batches of our kid’s summer market project are in production. Want to guess the (botanical) dye source?

Fell into a weekend rabbithole on social defeat stress and woke up thinking about social media as a structurally contagious form of it, like tin pest but with human sociability

@ted I think what I’m reaching for is the ahhhh maladaptive crystallization (?) of individual psyches causing everyone and their behavior to become incomprehensible to one another. Social defeat stress, moral injury, just a ton of individual creeping breakdowns in response to each other but at scale.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@mibwright I think I’m less interested myself in trying to engineer purportedly pro-cohesion behavior via user interfaces and more in trying to figure out how scaling relatively intimate exposure to each other so dramatically can ramp up existing models of social stress, but I’m kind of an anti-nudge person so idk

The robins and varied thrushes here are bad at glass detection so we have iridescent stickers on our unscreened windows to keep them alive—we use the ring-and-circle ones and a lot of them per window and they've zeroed out strikes on every window they're on.

Unexpected side benefit: The local hummingbirds like to zoom up examine them, so every day now the same crew of teeny warlords comes up very close and peers in through the windows behind my computer.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

Two notes for fellow bird lovers: you may need different stickers or patterns depending on your local birds, and also the iridescent ones have to be on the outside of the window to work. They stay on through window washing so it's pretty easy.

(Hummingbirds, for those of you who don't have them as neighbors, are comically aggressive and also I always wear hats outdoors since one got stuck in my hair a few years ago when I was wearing it curly. But I still love them.)

I just heard a dog owner describe her greyhound as ‘dorky, bouncy, emotional and communicative’ and I’m like, me too

@skinnylatte every time someone says their dog is "food-motivated" I'm like MA'AM ME TOO

Finally had the time to rent this book (yeah for the orders open to all at the University of Luxembourg!).

That's what I like about research, the space to explore different ways of communicating and discussing results.

Final part of the book ‘Small Data is Beautiful’, a musical score composed by Rowan McNaught, titled ‘Coda’.
