I can't get over how wonderful these molecular machines animations are.

But more pressingly, I can't get over how mindboggling and fascinating this stuff really is. These are molecules, swarms of atoms, that just happen to "do certain work" following the laws of physics and chemistry, which after "some time" turned out to become Life.

I'm often looking for analogies to explain this emergence. Conway's Game of Life is clearly one.

Do y'all think of this stuff?

I got SO frustrated at one point at #amaze2024. There was a great panel about how we don't have control over the engines and tools we use. About how small, open source engines are the way to do that.

They lamented the closure of walled gardens like Flash (I fear for Dreams in a hopefully far future), and how much culture is lost to the whims of the market.

They mentioned the contradiction of user vs corporate interests. They mentioned open source as an example to follow.

But when I asked...

When I asked (or rather, nervously rambled) about whether making engines and games Free (libre) and open source is a way to protect and preserve that culture, they had terrible misconceptions about what that means!

All came to say that making their games open source would require managing a repository, a community, and they didn't have time for that.

But that's completely optional!! Just release your game with a folder that says "source code k tx bye" and a txt with the license and be done!

It was so frustrating that they were talking about the politics and power dynamics of proprietary, corporate-owned tools and didn't stop to think what that means for any cultural work.

One of them even made a proprietary game engine. Which, yeah fine, but doesn't it miss the point?

I should have said something back but the mic was far gone. And honestly I was just disappointed.

Anyhow maybe I should do a little hyper talk about liberating your games at the next A MAZE.? It's an interesting discussion and there's so many myths and misunderstandings.

I've been interested in this for over a decade and I haven't seen the revolution I expected where indie games would be Libre and open source. And I think it's mostly due to misinformation.

Alright let's do it!

I mentioned Pico-8 as an example. I LOVE the thing. And yet, isn't it susceptible to oblivion, being proprietary? Isn't it another walled garden that one day will close?

I guess those games published as HTML or binary will still be playable but how about the ones playable only through splore?

As long as we keep making games in proprietary walled gardens, those games, those engines, won't belong to us and could (and will) disappear.
