I'm always tickled when an algorithm I'm used to seeing in one context is used in another. For instance, an algorithm typically used for BLAST (https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi) is also used to determine where a cursor should be put after its region gets modified (https://github.com/radian-software/apheleia). They're both just 'fuzzy string matching', but for very different problems.
