Choosing a travel backpack is really hard, and I still haven't found one I love, so mostly for my own reference I wrote a long post with thoughts on pretty much every travel backpack out there https://christianselig.com/2024/04/choosing-a-backpack-is-hard/

If you have other recommendations gimme

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Kinda interesting that you use packing cubes/tech pouch for most things but also want a built in laptop/ipad holder. Why not go full modular and get a laptop sleeve like the Tom Bihn cache? Seems like most bag makers either lean towards black hole or modular. Finding one in the middle seems tricky.

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I get that. Though I use the cache and I just unzip the top to get my laptop in and out on the plane. It functions like a laptop compartment but with the added benefit of removing it when I don't bring my laptop.

@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig That would be a good improvement. I'm a huge fan of my pilot messenger bag. The separate water bottle compartment in the middle of the bag is everything I didn't know I needed

@christianselig crazy timing but Western Rise just launched a new Kickstarter today and their bag looks exactly like what you're looking for https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/westernrise-bags/voyager-travel-collection

Does anyone other than Anker make a Qi2 battery yet? Looking for something slimmer than Anker’s but still with Qi2

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Belkin announced theirs at CES but haven't released them yet. Looks possibly slimmer but not by much https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/belkin-new-qi2-gan-iphone-chargers-ces-2024-news/

This was a shitpost but I’ve cancelled a lot of stuff this spring and three really is the number. (Regional newspapers have been the absolute worst.)

If I have to say NO JUST DO IT more than three times, steam rises from my brain. If I have to say it only twice I feel grateful, which is also terrible.

Anyway—I used to subscribe to a bunch of smaller papers for a few months at a time to support their work but this last round has been so bad that I’m done. https://mas.to/@kissane/112270240074896605

@kissane I once told Comcast I was going to jail and it was amazing how fast my subscription was cancelled.

@marcel This is great. I love that you went straight into showing instead of telling. Really demonstrates the flow well.

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@marcel I'd keep it. It's a good intro, but it isn't too long. Maybe consider a variation that says hey then auto transitions into the first question.

Has anyone of you worked with Relume yet? It looks well-designed but I’m always skeptical if something sounds too good to be true (“Effortlessly generate sitemaps and wireframes for marketing websites in minutes.” “Watch AI turn your wires into polished designs with a ready to use design system ready for dev.”).

Because it is usually not true.

https://relume.io

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott my evolving approach to AI tools is to think of them as a shitty first draft generator. It gives you something to start with and helps you galvanize what you do and don't want.

Still very WIP, but I am revamping the #obsidian UI for right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Dhivehi, Hebrew, Farsi, Syriac, Urdu.

So many little questions I had never thought about:

  • Which way does a "back" arrow go?
  • Do progress bars fill right-to-left?
  • Are slashes in paths reversed?
  • Do window buttons get mirrored on major OSes?

This has been an eye-opening experience. Using start/end values rather than left/right is something I will think about with every project going forward.

I'm starting to think people that claim to like the fediverse dont understand the point. We want to be able to follow Threads accounts here without having to have a Threads account. That's the whole point.

No single entity is in control of social media. That's the glory of federation.

Blocking major companies from the fediverse will be the death of the concept. Don't silo yourselves in fits of hate and segregation or you're no better than the things you claim to protest.

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@Jonathanglick @AAKL

I think it's a very strategic play from Meta. How the fetiverse is structured right now, they are the most frictionless way to get started and changing instances later on fairly hard. I think they're banking on people getting started on Threads and staying there because moving to a different instance will be too difficult.

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@AAKL @Jonathanglick I wouldn't rule it out.

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@o_simardcasanova @Jonathanglick @AAKL Absolutely. I think it's an easy way for them to fulfill the requirements of EU regulators without much risk of losing users. If Mastodon ever adopted architecture like Bluesky's PDS that allowed users to change servers easily, Meta would be fight it hard.

Meyerweb, to random
@Meyerweb@mastodon.social avatar

The Mastodon “personal note” feature is really great. I was able to leave future me the reminder “Holier-than-thou anarchist wanker” on an account I blocked, just in case I one day notice the block and wonder why it’s there.

(To be clear, the “anarchist” part is a clarifying associative descriptor, not a pejorative. Got no quarrel with anarchists, just plenty of quarrel with smug jerks.)

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@Meyerweb I had no idea that was a feature. That's nifty.

I found out today that Dune (the actual book from 1966) is available copyright-free from Archive dot org as an ePub / PDF for digital reading (https://archive.org/details/dune-saga-collection/Dune%20Saga%20Collection/Brian%20Herbert/House%20Atreides%20%28278%29/House%20Atreides%20-%20Brian%20Herbert/), and I naturally went on a hunt for the nicest cover to add it to Apple Books.

There’s a LOT of awesome Dune cover art! Here's a fantastic history on Dune art through the years: https://t.co/khptGz4Pbi

kissane, to random
@kissane@mas.to avatar

Ozone, Bluesky's stackable moderation system is up and open-sourced.

https://bsky.social/about/blog/03-12-2024-stackable-moderation

I think it's interesting in obvious ways and risky in some less obvious ones (that have less to do with "O NO BILLIONAIRES" or "O NO LIBERTARIANS" and more to do with placelessness), but we'll see.

I hope good things emerge from/grow on top of this framework.

[I recognize that mentioning this is widely considered to be an invitation to explain capital like I am a tiny baby. You could also not.]

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort @leitmedium @kissane

That's my exact question too. I still have to dive into Bluesky's full implementation, but it seems like they have an additional layer of an actual trust and safety team, where Mastodon does not.

After over a year of using Mastodon almost exclusively for social media—it’s still a shock to go back to visit an algorithmically-driven social network.

Scrolling and reading on other sites feels like eating a candy bar while drinking a soda—the candy bar has very little flavor—your taste buds are already overloaded by sugar.

And yet sugar is the algorithmically incentivized form of content, so sugary posts are the only ones that get traction.

joshwayne,
@joshwayne@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat I can literally feel my cortisol spiking. Algorithms are sometimes nice for discovery, but it's something I wanna dip into occasionally not something I have to use.
