The Nashville Parthenon has announced plans to return 248 pre-Columbian objects to Mexico. Margaret Renkl offers an intriguing look at how the process unfolded. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/27/opinion/nashville-museum-artifacts-mexico.html?unlocked_article_code=1.vk0.efYO.WiXmVX1VZk53&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cb

Today, Apple TV+ releases the first three episodes of its new series, Franklin. I’ve reviewed the show—mostly positively—for Slate. #EverythingHasAHistory #AppleTVPlus #histodons #VastEarlyAmerica https://slate.com/culture/2024/04/ben-franklin-michael-douglas-apple-show-true-story-accuracy.html

I don't recall giving Weather on my Apple devices notifications permissions. With recent updates, I get Weather notifications on all of them. I finally remembered to turn them all off. Did Apple just decide I wanted them?

jmadelman,
@jmadelman@historians.social avatar

@glennf That is some seriously impressive futility on the first three guesses.

Hey, #histodons, I have the vague impression that historians of the US and/or American historians are less active on Mastodon than a few months ago. You get the same impression too?

@jmadelman, maybe you have a more informed view of things, at historians.social?

jmadelman,
@jmadelman@historians.social avatar

@NBarreyre Unfortunately I suspect that’s a fair assessment. A lot of my community is now on Bluesky, and frankly—despite running an instance—I’ve actually ended up cutting down a lot on my posting overall.

Imagine someone even more ineffectual as Speaker than Kevin McCarthy, should he be ousted—I dare you.

There was buzz when McCarthy was failing vote after vote for the position earlier this year that some Republicans might gang up with Democrats to pick a moderate Speaker. You only need a handful of Republicans to make that happen if the Speaker were 100% acceptable to Democrats.

jmadelman,
@jmadelman@historians.social avatar

@glennf Writing as a historian but with tongue firmly in cheek, right now it sort of seems like all we’re missing from the 2023 bingo card is a bizarre cross-aisle political alliance that no one would have expected or thought possible six months ago.

Fox debate attributes "shining city on a hill" to Ronald Reagan. No, it was John Winthrop in 1630. #history

jmadelman,
@jmadelman@historians.social avatar

@jeffjarvis Plus Winthrop’s city wasn’t shining, and the whole paragraph indicates he was worried the Puritans would screw it all up and end up a cautionary tale…

The expansion of AI, and especially LLMs such as ChatGPT, is … not going well, to say the least. @jeffjarvis offers self-described “unpopular opinions” about where we are and where we should (and will?) head. https://buzzmachine.com/2023/08/21/a-few-unpopular-opinions-about-ai/

For my third #AHAReads of the summer I selected a book by an author with a different background from me (if one significant common interest): My Life with Benjamin Franklin by Claude-Anne Lopez, a former editor with the Papers of Benjamin Franklin. @AHAHistorians #histodons @histodons

But what is the actual PROBLEM with Mastodon?? Said one hundred dozen people over several months of threads here. So I wrote it up.

It's too long, but we got bad doors, stilt-walking French shepherds, water bugs, a bunch of @/shengokai@zirk.us quotations, What The Fuck Is Up With Bluesky, and more.

After a really enriching and enjoyable experience at #SHEAR2023, I’ve returned home to work and apply lots of things that I’ve learned. There are four big takeaways (or perhaps meta-takeaways) from the conference that I want to expand on at some point, but will put down here for starters. The first is a lesson about scholarship, and the other three are about organizations. Here’s goes.

“In such times of institutional crisis, we argue, otherwise unspoken or less obvious normative conventions for the lop-sided, gendered division of academic labor may be rendered more visible or evident, and needs often threaten to outstrip resources in such scenarios.”

Interesting new study on how students perceived support early in the #pandemic—they expected female faculty to be more accommodating, which only worsened the gendered labor divide. #teaching #academia https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10755-023-09652-x
