My new film, 'Primogeniture', is screening with a collection of other shorts at 6pm next Tuesday (the 4th of June) at the Cameo cinema in Edinburgh. If you're local to that, please consider going to see it. I'm really pleased with how this one has turned out. #film #Shortfilm #Edinburgh #movies

Esther McVey has vowed to drive equality, diversity and inclusivity out of government. In my latest piece for Yorkshire Bylines I explain why competent government isn't actually possible without them. https://yorkshirebylines.co.uk/society/equality-diversity-and-inclusivity-at-the-core-of-competent-government/?feed_id=758&_unique_id=66444d0ec930f

Some of the analysis on recent events in Scottish politics is just bizarre, and if there's one thing it shows clearly, it's that the political models that seems to make sense under a first past the post system just don't apply here. In fact, they don't apply well anywhere, which is partly why politics more widely is so messy at the moment. In my latest piece for Bylines Scotland I look at how Scotland's situation provides insights into what's going on. https://bylines.scot/politics/beyond-left-and-right-making-politics-make-sense/?feed_id=1069&_unique_id=66308ac1c21dc #ScotPol #UKpol

The other day I had a chat with Renny Harlin, who may be a legend in the industry but is also super lovely, about his enduring passion for action, making 'The Bricklayer' and his reboot of 'The Strangers'. I have to catch up with him again sometimes because I never did get round to telling him of my abiding love for 'Deep Blue Sea'. https://www.eyeforfilm.co.uk/feature/2024-01-12-interview-with-renny-harlin-about-the-bricklayer-feature-story-by-jennie-kermode

I've just started in my new role as Inclusivity Coordinator at the Bylines Network today and I'm looking forward to bringing fresh voices to national media. Far too much of the British press is dominated by highly privileged people and a lot of important stories are completely overlooked as a result. If you'd be interested in writing for us and in helping to change that, drop me a line.

I'm looking to talk to one or two Scottish LGBTQ+ people about their chosen family structures and, if possible, about how those were affected by Covid lockdowns and how any future lockdown might be run better with that in mind. This would be for a piece in Bylines Scotland. If you have thoughts you'd like to share, drop me a line. #lgbtq

Along with the Flamingoland nonsense at Loch Lomond, we now have property developers after building a gated community at Loch Tay. it's vital not to let them get their claws into Scotland like this of we'll end up like those stretches of the US where every scrap of green land becomes a golf course, every waterway a place for private boats, and ordinary people can't even see them for the wall of gated communities. Here's one of the interviews I enjoyed most at Fantasia - with Steve Adams and Sean Horler on their documentary 'Satan Wants You', which I really cannot recommend enough as a thorough and revelatory investigation of the 1980s Satanic Panic and the book which triggered it, 'Michelle Remembers'. https://www.eyeforfilm.co.uk/feature/2023-08-09-interview-with-steve-j-adams-and-sean-horlor-about-satan-wants-you-feature-story-by-jennie-kermode #Fantasia2023 #documentary #journalism

I'm beginning the process of data entry for this year's Toronto Film Festival (I know, I'm late), and honestly, people put years of their lives into their films - and sometimes millions of dollars too - yet when it comes to the one line pitch which will make or break it with a lot of viewers, many just do not seem to grasp that it would be a good idea to bring in someone capable of constructing a coherent sentence. :(

I hear that Google is now pitching 'AI generated' (i.e. plagiarised) news content to media companies. That's likely another reason why it has been making it harder and harder for journalists to use its tools for research. It has identified us as competition. Where does that leave members of the public who just want to know what's really happening in the world? #journalism #news #AI

jennie_kermode,
@jennie_kermode@toot.community avatar

@ReCursing So what would you call re-using other people's work like that? It's not about the wording used by AIs - that's a separate issue and one on which I suspect we generally agree. I find your choice of words interesting, however, because 'Luddite' is a term which has been muddied a good deal itself. The original Luddites were not against new technology but against the way it was then being used to exploit rather than assist ordinary people.

jennie_kermode,
@jennie_kermode@toot.community avatar

@ReCursing I'm not worried about my job and I do use AI tools (transcription software) - though, as you say, they need oversight. AI can legitimately produce certain types of article, such as timelines, but it's being pitched as a producer of news reports, which is a different thing.
