First thoughts coming back from #PyConUS #pyconus2024: Do you know anyone who works hard but is unrecognized in your #Python community? Nominate them for stuff at the @thepsf ! Don't know what or how? I've written a README here:
https://iqbalabdullah.net/en/posts/2024/05/nominating-pythonistas-at-the-psf/

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@hugovk @Thepsf Ah yes. I was first made aware of the Award myself when Naomi received it. For some reason I had the impression it's something that the Board decides upon not through public nominations unlike the rest.
Will add it to the list on my blog.

@brainwane Utmost welcomed! Thanks for your keynote! I noticed the 2024 Mar resolutions after the PSF's Members Lunch but since Deb mentioned during her closing that there was no CSA to give away during the conference, I'm assuming the resolution didn't come in time for operational cutoff time.

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@sabderemane @brainwane That email address is correct. I sent an accepted CSA nomination once to that email address and received a response (perhaps because it was accepted).
I don't know how the process is, but because everyone is just working during their free time on the PSF board, I believe they might just not respond if it's something they are not taking any action upon, or they just missed it.
I guess you can always send a follow up "sup?" email if you're keen for a response. 🤷🏾

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@sabderemane @brainwane Yes, I can emphasize that. If it helps, usually I just send out one "sup?" email after a few weeks when I remember and if there is still no response and if I feel really determined I will join one of the office hours that the Board people are on (they are in fact everywhere) or just DM them here or on 🐦. @kwonhan even has a Calendly invite open for people to ask him questions ね!

Okay as we jump into our final days of PyCon. I want to share we raised $11,000 in the first two days for @blackpythondevs

This is amazing and will rapidly fast-forward our plans including starting an open source contribution program and establishing our first local groups (while supporting some others)

Our stretch goal is $15,000!!

We're about $3,250 away. There are still about 2200 people at #pyconUS that haven't donated and $2-5 each would obliterate that goal!!

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@kjaymiller @blackpythondevs

Glad I'm helping out. Get that goal!

@mariatta If there is a skill I would like to have, is to immediately tell if someone is a Pythonista just by looking at them when I land at an airport where we're going to have our PyCon.

@ThePSF Hey, when is PSF Member Lunch?

The topic came up, and only one person out of eight (including your next PyCon US Chair) didn't get one. I didn't have it either. We also looked on the schedule and didn't see it?

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@webology @ThePSF Yes, I missed this one too. I didn't see it on the schedule and the next thing I noticed it was sold out.

Is the PSF Members Lunch by invitation in the first place?

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@hugovk @webology @ThePSF Thanks. Unfortunately that mailing list is private, and I have missed the announcement on Discourse because I wasn't expecting events happening at the conference will be announced there.
I believe it will be helpful if the PSF Member Lunch event is also included in the usual announcement for the conference , since it's also an event at the conference?

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@hugovk Thank you. I can't finish the checkout and see the error "Voucher SPNS_COMP_M6WSYYJX is no longer available".

I'm assuming that there are no more places then. Anyway, thanks for the help!

Started experiencing BPPV again after about 3 months of no symptoms 🥺

BPPV: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

Inside your ears are otoconia crystals that sends signals to your brain about movement and motion, gives you a sense of balanced.

These crystals can become dislodged, and as you move around they send incorrect signals to the brain, and the eyes, causing illusions of movements or spinning, which then cause dizziness and nausea.

This condition is called BPPV.
🤢😵‍💫😵💫

I spent multiple years to say "everybody pays".
even keynote speakers.
it will make community healthier

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@jonafato @darjeeling I am also a supporter that "everyone" pays. Of course, there are levels of affordability and not everyone has to pay the same amount. Having bigger grants and knowing there are grants for you will definitely help.
But of course this is just a technical issue. If the organizers can afford it, they should do what they think works the best for their community.

How much does it bother you when people talk about "open source" language models (like Llama 2) which are released under licenses that don't meet the OSI definition for open source?

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@simon Well, I don't get fiery angry about this, but it does bother me and it bothers me enough that I will talk about it to the people around me who are interested in the subject.

@mariatta@fosstodon.org avatar

My kids' school wants me to fill in some Student Emergency Release form.

They emailed me the form in a Word doc file, with like tables and checkboxes here and there.
When I open the file and fill it in, some table borders got shifted and things look weird 😵

I guess they didn't expect people to actually open the word file, but expect us to print it out, fill it in with actual pen, and then scan it back to them. 😵‍💫
And I guess they actually print it out one more time on their end 😰

iqbalabd,
@iqbalabd@mtd.pythonasia.org avatar

@mariatta What's your take on why they have to do this? I mean, a form online with a link or even Google Forms could do the same thing. Do they need you to sign it physically to make it legit?

Can someone help solve this mystery..
Why do some people put their mobile phone on loud speaker and walk around holding it in front of their face having a conversation instead of using the normal speaker and holding it against their ear? This has puzzled me for years.

@kjaymiller I second that Jay. Judgemental in more ways than one. But in the end it sorts of boils down to "if you're not with us, you're against us".
Anti-thesis to someone who works with and for the community where we have to focus on similarities than difference to get people to work with and enjoy each other.

🤔 I am sure it will take me a while to update my various email and social media footers, but my ~5-year term as @ThePSF director and vice chair ended today.

🙏 It was an honor to serve, work with everyone, and leave a small mark on the community and our direction.
