Fairphone sent me the Fairbuds to test about a week ago. My thoughts:

✅ Replaceable battery in both the buds & the case!
✅ Active noise canceling & decent sound quality (to me, not an audiophile)
✅ 149 eur, not bad
❌ Buds & case both quite bulky
❌ Almost symmetrical design means I never know which way is R/L, or up/down
❌ BT range seems a bit lower than usual

More about this later

homo_particeps,

Don't know what to think of the price. I willing to pay more for repairability, fairness and "LTS".
But i don't know why such things would be in the 100€ range in the first place.

Are tws in the 30€ range that bad?
I would like them much more as a referenc point, pay 130% repairablility tax and end up at 70€...

Serious question: Which do you consider to be the least unethical among very-big-tech companies (let's say top 10 only), and why?

No judgement, just for statistical purposes! :ablobcatattention:

Probably Google tbh🙈

At least from the top 5, im not sure what are the top 10...

For PINE64 Community Quarterly Q&A (Q1 2024), place your questions in comments here!

homo_particeps, (edited )

@PINE64

  1. What haplend with the plans for a buetooth-audio development board?

  2. What has become of the DevZone?

  3. Wouldn't it be promising to put some resources in development, community organisation and up to date documentation even if you would need to increase product prices by 10%?

  4. Do you share the the observation that the number of half-baked/unusable products is quite high? What do you do/plan aigainst this?

Long awaited community update is here! Introducing PineVox and bone conduction headset (help us find a name!), IronOS progress, PineNote insights, and PineTime news! We also cover cluster failure, state of services, and the future of the community updates. See you in the upcoming Q&A!
https://pine64.org/2024/03/17/march-update-making-waves/

homo_particeps,

@PINE64
These updates where once driver of a prosperous community. Now they only come when new poducts are announced?

I think #pine64 should focus more on supporting development for their existing line-up than developing new niche devices. Or they will face the same fate as the many existing unsuccessful products!

What has become of the DevZone? It could really help overcome hampers in dev. which would have great impact on maturity, comunity and trust!
+In the end sales and thus finance itself

For fun, I've generated a 4096x4096 image, that contains all existing 8bits/channels RGB colors (and each only once), so:
256x256x256 = 4096x4096 = 16777216 colors.

Still, the image looks like something!
(almost 50Mb .png file, cannot be previewed).

homo_particeps,

@gmic fascinating!
how did you do that?

Why are there so few reviews about the mnt (pocket) reform?
I know its a niche product but i would guess there are many youtubers/bloggers that would be happy to review a unit if they would get one lend.

Or am i wrong?

I already explained the main differences between most packaging formats, but now, it’s time to look at them in a more critical manner:
Performance benchmarks, missing features, advantages and drawbacks, for #Snaps, #Flatpak, #AppImage and regular good old packages:

#Linux #OpenSource

Are you sure that the firefox (and all its dependencys) versions where exacly the same for all installation methods?

Ireally don't know how the results of the speedometer benchmark could be explained differently...

Remember Glimpse NX, a project that tried to reimagine @GIMP UI? Their mockups looked interesting but didn't have a good answer what to do with features in the main menu. Well, a new 3D CAD program called Dune 3D by @karotte might just have a solution for that missing piece. Which poses an interesting question: could that redesign be revived?

homo_particeps,

I like the idea of this searchable floating spacebar-menu really much!
It would enable a much faster and lower brain-load workflow. And at the same time be relatively discoverable.

homo_particeps,

@Bundesregierung please, don't try to flex with this.

Thinkpad 13s standby battery test:

23:00: closed lid at 15% battery
13:00 (14h later): woke up at 13%.

I think the computer goes into more of a hybernation mode, since turning on takes a while, but that's pretty nice. I really want this Windows on ARM thing to work out!

homo_particeps,

What Microsoft has done in the past is: Keeping a half baked product as long as it keeps the makret from considering a alternative.

They never invested to make their Poduct as good as possible. They only invest to keep a monopoly. So it will may take a while...

Would be a great chance for Qualcom to mainline their drivers into Linux. They are interested too to become more independen from us corps, right?

Every time I mentioned a Fairphone in a Friday Checkout we got great views. Clearly there is a lot of interest, so I got a review unit. What would you like to know about either the phone or the company behind it?

homo_particeps,

@Techaltar

  1. Usb-c analog audio-out ("Audio Accessory Mode")?
    Sacifice of audio jack might be understandable, when you dont need a dac-chip in every headphone/adapter you use, because the cables breake and its e-waste^10.

  2. Why costs the usb-c replacement 20€? In fact its 33% more than the (simmilar?) fp4 replacement, as pricy as the whole bottom-mod. of the fp3.? Is a seperate replacable plug even sensible under that circumstance?
