I noticed recently that an old blog site of mine stopped loading its styles.css and so displayed see as a horrible mess. Nothing has changed on the site, just the browser.

The reason?

Today's browsers (ie anything #Chrome based) are becoming authoritarian about what they will display. This isn't a security issue, but an increasing stringency on something that makes no sense at all.

The solution?

Remove <!DOCTYPE> and pretend you're an old website, so they need to display as it was. 🤷‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️

Apparently #Israel's #Mossad have been using veiled #threats, #intimidation and #psyops to undermine the #ICC for years. Against the prosecutor previously in charge of investigating crimes against #Palestine.

This was personally undertaken by the then head of Mossad who is now rising in Israeli politics.

This isn't just about #Netanyahu or a recent swing to extremism in Israel, these crimes have been ongoing for decades but are now blatant and impossible to hide, support by US/UK governments.

My first computer printer was a #Teletype 33 which I could barely pick up, as it was a big beast made almost entirely of metal. And not flimsy metal, this thing could have taken a bullet and not flinched.

Printing was at an incredible - very noisy - 3ish characters per second, and all UPPER CASE!

Even though I have chosen to disable notifications in @signalapp Messenger, it continually nags me to enable them.

That's in spite of:

• my active choice
• that notifications are a known security risk for those most in need of privacy

That's a dark pattern as well as bad #UX, which undermines my faith in the team and their motives.

t00t! The one last sticking point in migrating my app from #Tauri v1 to #TauriV2 beta is unstuck.

Twas a tricky one, but the demo now works as well as before (I think!).

Next I want to see if it works with Android, at least in the simulator.

Five days since my #Legion9 #i9 laptop arrived and I put #Ubuntu24 on it, then my data, dev tools etc.

Status:

• most things just work: Canon printer, disk mounting, USB devices etc and I figured out how to configure the 🎄 keyboard/led modes. Minor foibles like Dash-to-panel settings missing sometimes.

Boy is it fast. LLM answers instant (no CUDA yet), build flies etc.

• internal speakers not working but I have also a Bluetooth speaker. Trackpad too, so bought USB mouse+TP.

It's hard to find #cargo add-ons. crates.io has very poor search options.

For example, I recall one which I think began with 'b' which sits in the terminal running the build and shows errors in order, unlike cargo build where they scoll off screen and out of view. [EDIT: from replies it is called 'bacon']

But I can't list search results by name, only things like newest etc.

I have had a new laptop for a day, and it's shit-hot!

Clearly aimed at gamers but the best spec I could find for development.

I went #Lenovo #Legion9 (max), rather than #Dell for the first time because the spec, and the fact my last Dell is faulty after 6 years (whereas my previous 15yr Dell is still perfect).

Lenovo support is poor, outsourced, unhelpful and knows less than I do.

Windows 11 was the only option, so no Ubuntu drivers. But ok, except the trackpad so far, USB devices on order.

I just took delivery of a laptop that came with #Windows 11.

After going through setup I felt abused and violated.

Then, doing anything on this top of the range machine was slow, and despite my answering 'privacy' to every option, it appears that every click in Edge is being sent back to Microsoft, slowing the fastest machine I've ever used.

Having installed Ubuntu 24 side by side makes this even more apparent. (I still want #Windows11 for testing).

I pity those who have to use it.

Kidding, scripts is actually fun because all the problems are solved with a quick web search. Well, not fun, but not indescribably painful as some coding process can be.

I have an app in Debian and Ubuntu. 🥳

Ten years ago I thought I'd finished programming altogether, then I stumbled on #Autonomi (then called Safe Network, no actually just MaidSafe then).

That compelled me to learn NodeJS, and after they switched from C++ to Rust in 2015 (this project is lead by a visionary) eventually I had to try that. And my "learn Rust with a little project" app is now in the Debian repositories.

Unbelievable for an old guy. All you young folk have plenty of time. Enjoy!

I read your summary of the We Need to Re-wild the Internet and wonder if you might want to look into a long term project which aims to open it up again.

After eighteen years of work, ten of which I've voluntarily helped with daily, the autonomous internet is set to launch this year.

I'm hoping it will level the playing field and create opportunities for innovation way beyond the 80's and TBL's breakthrough in '94. I was excited then, but even moreso now.

I'm still taking this in.

A couple of years after starting a little project to learn #RustLang, that little app is in the Debian repos and I can install it from the latest Ubuntu 24.04.

I am so chuffed. A very happyborg to have finally given something back to the #FOSS community in the form of an app.

The app, #vdash is very niche, so not of interest to many but has an enthusiastic band of #Autonomi fans using it every day and sharing their observations by posting screenshots online. 🥳

By the #EU's own data sharing standards the #EuropeanParliament has decided citizens' most sensitive data - #health records - can be shared without consent.

Opt-out is not consent according to the #GDPR which means the EU having started well is sliding under the bus of corporate power just like everywhere else.

Without #privacy the can be no freedom.
