@North Can't wait for you to actually produce those, the @FabLabMuc definitely needs one 😁

The argument against nuclear power is ridiculous on a planet with this many nuclear weapons. We have a loaded gun pointed at our heads 24/7 and we can't use it to scratch behind our ear?

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

@North I'll be honest, from the wording of this toot I'm not sure if this is pro or anti nuclear power, lol.
I'm strongly pro nuclear power but anti nuclear weapons for obvious reasons. Power with out weapons can be a thing, but it wouls require strong oversight.
Nuclear power is not a solution for ever, but shutting down nuclear only to raise coal or lng like Germany is doing right now is even more harmful. IMO we need nuclear power until we can get a stable grid using something else.

Because I'm a bit sick at home and don't have enough projects already I started another, albeit small, project. Making a mould to make a mould, to cast some epoxy and to make use of my ZnS:Ag I have here ;-)

Aaaaaand the silicone won't cure in contact with the resin, of course :|
Ah well, a reprint and some clear coat should fix this

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

@stdlogicvector Yep, plenty! 😋

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

@stdlogicvector ...but mostly more surface per surface.

Take a look at what I'm trying to replicate and have a guess what it is!

You know what I love?
Small projects never are just that.

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

Until I figure out my issues with the resin prints an FDM printed mould will have to do. The silicone is cured and the resin is poured, now it's all baking at 80 °C until I have a solid part.

First successful epoxy cast!
Way to many bubbles and I don't like the visible FDM layers, but it's a part!

Also, I finally got a cast from the SLA printed mold, so that's what I'll use from now on. I love how clear this epoxy is!

Bought a plate of slate at the euroshop and got a piece of pyrite with it!

image/jpeg

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark They're everywhere here, used to be 1€ for everything, now it's 1 to 5€ depending on the item. Most of what they sell are household items, snacks and toys

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

In the pyrite community we call gold "Fools Pyrite"

Don't you love it when you watch a video of someone telling their experience with autism and it feels like a biography of your own life...

wellp.

So here's a fun experiment:
Nuclear Track Detectors from the hardware store!
I bought some protective sheets for welding masks which are made from a plastic called CR-39, exposed them to a radium watch face (two sheets, one on the front, one on the back in case there is some coating) and now, if I etch them, they should show tracks / tunnels where alphas hit the plastic!

Now I only need a day off where I can watch a vat of 6M NaOH boil for 6-8 hours...

And in they are!

Another attempt and an ABSOLUTE success!
I am so happy with this, it's really simple and absolutely stunning!

Unfortunately it doesn't image all that well, but the holes are definitely visible!
I think it needs more etching time, they aren't as deep as I would have expected.
Still, amazing to see and to think that every single dot on there is produced by one single helium nucleus!
You're basically counting atoms here ;-)

Ceramics class! I made a trio of mugs, two of which are marbled, and I started on one of these donut shaped jugs that I was reading about on Wikipedia. That donut is hollow

Ohh fun, ATLAS just caught something cosmic!
At the moment there is no beam in the LHC, and it's a straight line through the detector but not the beam collision point in its center.
I wonder how they select events to display here, if this just happened to trigger all the right... well, triggers.

Sooooo
I made a small "investment"

A friend who has supplied me with great scintillators in the past is retiring, so I decided to get a few more before he could not sell them anymore.
This time he really outdid himself and made a perfect NaI / PMT assembly, which will replace the detector in my lead castle. The CsI are perfect for smaller / portable detectors, the rest is for my collection ;-)

It's interesting to see the difference between batches, look at the colors under UV!

gigabecquerel,
@gigabecquerel@chaos.social avatar

@RichiH A good bit, but definitely less than "market value" ;-)
The whole set cost me around half of what a new, off the shelf NaI like that alone would be!

I have poor self control

Worked like this for maybe half a second, then something arced over in the MMC, charred and gave the high voltage a nice and easy path to get through.

But damn, I'm definitely on the right path!
