#WritingWonders Day 28 - Secondary Character POV: what’s the worst thing the MC has done to you?
Brigid: Isis turned away from The Path. She rejected everything she was, everything we, her family, stood for because she was scared, because she felt guilty about Sabrina. But I knew Sabrina. And she got everything she deserved.
Well, it’s funny you should ask because I just happen to have a playlist ranging from goth-rock to black metal for my current witches/vampires/pagan horror novel, #Trinity.
Trevellas Coombe in St Agnes, Cornwall and it’s neighbouring bay, Trevaunance Cove played a massive part in inspiring my dark thriller Badlands.
There’s an old wreckers tunnel running from the cliffs through to the Driftwood Spars in the village, and the pub and the tunnel also feature heavily in the book.
#writingWonders does the media or public opinion play a role in your story?
Judging by others' answers i read this question wrong: meant as an internal aspect of the story rather than a current external influence on me as a writer.
So, no :(
But, yes ;)
Today's news and opinions shape the antagonist's populist-baiting climb to power, and the disregard for the consequences of their own, and their enablers', callous ambition on the lives of ordinary people.
@mike_ie I like your take on the question. Looking at it through the external influence lens, Trinity is probably the least media/public opinion shaped book I’ve written.
One of the big themes of Badlands, and the motivation for the antagonist, was the vampiric nature of tourism on a beauty spot (Cornwall in Badlands’ case), particularly the conflict between local poverty and housing issues and wealthy people buying second homes in the area. #WritingWonders
@mike_ie it does get super busy and I say that as one of the summer horde! I love it, it’s a stunning part of the world, but I also see behind the tourist veneer and listen and read the local view points and the conflict is real.
For my part, I try to respect the area and the locals, leave nothing but footprints on the sand and go home with good memories (and maybe a few new story ideas).
#WritingWonders Day 26 - Does the media or public opinion play a role in your story?
Not in Trinity. The story is very much focused on Isis, Maeve and Brigid’s conflicts.
In Badlands, Willow’s sister was at the eye of a media storm before she disappeared. She’d been caught having an affair with a local businessman and when the businessman turned up dead at the bottom of the cliffs in Perranporth, the media went into a frenzy.
#WritingWonders Day 22 - Do you prefer writing first or last chapters.
Writing last chapters always brings a sense of relief and fulfilment; relief that I managed to take the ideas I had and work them into something resembling a novel, and fulfilment that I’ve told those characters stories.
#WritingWonders day 21. MC POV: if you had to give your younger self any advice what would it be?
Isis (Trinity): Don’t invite Sabrina around to your house. Make sure she never sets foot in your house for any reason. She cannot know what you are. It’s the only way to save her life.
Willow (Badlands): When you run away, make sure Ellie comes with you.
Lily (Bleak Waters): Don’t get close to your father cos one day he’ll break your heart.
