Just finished Senua’s Saga: and was incredibly disappointed.

We adored the first game, and while this one is gorgeous and has a couple inspired moments, it’s hollow, ineffective, and ultimately tedious in almost all aspects, particularly the gameplay and story, which is pretty damning.

If it tickles your fancy at all, just go play Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade again instead. It’s not even worth playing if you already have Game Pass - it’s just a waste of time.

@SJohnRoss Yeah, we were pretty hyped for it, so it was a huge letdown.

@ivory I can't seem to figure out how to set up a column for a persistent, ideally live-updating search for a hashtag on desktop. I can get another column and set it to the right hashtag, but it resets to the base Hashtag tab every time the app is hidden/shown or closed/reopened.

Not sure if that's a limitation or just how it's currently set, but I would love that option in the future.

Or maybe I should try experimenting with a timeline composed of multiple hashtags and seeing if that works?

Holy shit, I submitted my wishlist for #GenCon the instant the button became available and I'm #12329 for processing. I don't know if that's good or bad. I'd hate to see what it would be if I hesitated.

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@rivetgeek My wife got in the 11,000s and submitted right away, too.

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@rivetgeek you should, submit them when you can - but we are very full for RPGs during the day, particularly Thursday & Friday. Late time slots will be easier to accommodate.

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@rivetgeek Selling early access to event registration would likely generate far more anger and frustration broadly than appreciation from those who could afford it.

It’s a constant request for VIGs, for example.

“Pay more for better” isn’t the approach we want to take everywhere.

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@rivetgeek I getcha. I just always point people toward submission so more folks know about the game, you on you have a table, etc.

playing through Mass Effect 1 the last few days. Man, that game feels somewhat badly designed. It feels like it wants to be both a #crpg and a shooter, and it doesn't quite pull it off.

Also the Legendary Edition I am playing has so many spots that are too dark to see it feels like walking through the game blind at points. If I have to use the map to find the exit of the room there's definitely something wrong.

I assume part 2 will be better.

#gaming

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Yeah, Mass Effect 1 was real rough, but 2 is a huge improvement.

It had magic, but it definitely was not in the gameplay mechanics or level design. The characters, world, and (to a lesser extent) the story carried it through.

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi How far in are you? How many companions have you gotten?

I’ve never bother with BroShep, personally. FemShep was always the right choice for us.

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Hm. I really loved Wrex & Garrus right from the start, and Tali was fun, too. The human woman was grating with her space racism and the human man was actually pretty good, but took time to open up. The only crew member I never really liked was Liara - she was too fan-servicey for me.

looking towards adapting City of Carse for my games. I've had it for ages, but when I last checked it it didn't suit my campaign's mood.
Now I think I am going to have a look at it again.

Will have to remove the Midkemia references though.

By the way, did you know that Reymond E. Feist's Riftwar novels started out with a campaign (which crossed over with ?)

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi i read a bunch as a kid, but not sure how well they’d hold up now. Riftwar stuff was fun but it was the Empire trilogy that I really loved, but was also riskier to revisit and maybe discover it was more Orientalist than I noticed at the time.

My wife has been putting money away to send me to #GenCon this year. She just hasn't gotten the badge or hotel or anything yet. But I have zero idea of what I would actually do at GenCon. I don't know what to plan for really 😅

frequentbeef,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@rivetgeek oh, there are plenty of options. Or you can do the classic move of just running a bunch of games.

    @LeviKornelsen I really wish they had used the primaris introduction to fix gender issues, but that likely would have made that backlash all the worse at the time.

    Not that the fanbass couldn’t use a flushing or two, mind you…

    @LeviKornelsen Ecological or natural disasters. A major attack (either external or internal) or full-blown war, civil or not. Disease.

    If you're going fantasy, a lot of those have pretty extreme analogs that are still basically the same, but having a god fundamentally chnage (or jsut actually die) hits differently in a fantasy setting.

    @LeviKornelsen Are you adding this to the starter pack document, or releasing another one?

    I browsed through the starter set and they were different than I expected, but quite fun. It was an interesting exercise to think about the fantasy races that are typically mapped to these tropes and then thinking of how things would play out when that is shaken up or inverted.

    I also love seeing the connection points when tropes become building blocks.

    frequentbeef,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen Yeah, that's part of the fun I had in D&D 4th edition in particular, figuring out how different power sources and different classes were expressed in the different default cultures. Or in Vampire, looking at how different clans affect various tropes within them…

    Thinking about it now, the World of Darkness probably deeply influenced me (for good or ill) with the “pick from 2+ lists of archetypes/tropes/factions and shake well.”

    When you fully accept that gamers are largely fundamentally competent at having a good time roleplaying, you realize that most design objectives OTHER THAN "save people work" and "get them excited" can be managed with a box of parts and a discussion of how to assemble them.

    But those two, hoo boy.

    frequentbeef,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen @ludopolitics There is definitely a category of games that are more fun to talk about than play, generally.

    I am suddenly possessed by a burning, irrational desire for a Vampire: The Masquerade skirmish miniatures combat game.

    I don't even know where this ludicrous urge is coming from. I think I just had some weird vision of little plastic kits for different clans and the fact that it would be so wildly out of place is part of why I think I would love it so much.

    frequentbeef,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    My meandering thought process was lamenting the mental burden of playing RPGs and appreciating how sustainable the minis hobby is through solo activities and then that got me thinking about how vibrantly distinct factions are so essential to minis games and that leapt to “World of Darkness and L5R have such strong factions" and now we're here, where I want skirmish-level minis games for two of the most classic big narrative-focused RPGs.

    I think the perverse paradox is part of the appeal.

    Poe was one of my favorite artists from the 90s that disappeared & it seems like maybe she's coming back?

    I caught her music in Alan Wake 2 and her YouTube channel re-activated and has uploaded a couple music videos, including one for “Hello" that is either a new recording or a remix/alternate version I've never heard before (much more rock-y).

    It's be great if she's back making music again, her debut album was a ton of fun and her second album was intricately sublime.

    @rivetgeek I read through some of the issues when she popped back up in Alan Wake, but I didn’t hear about any of it before that. Great to see that maybe she’s getting her old stuff back, finally.

    With the new movies, we are re-entering the era where loads of people defend Dune by denying that it's got a White Savior narrative in it, or imperialistic and colonialist themes, or otherwise pretending it doesn't deal in seriously fucked up shit.

    And now I need to resist the urge to shake them and yell "It does! Of course it does! It deals in those to say some shit about them! DID YOU MISS THE FUCKING POINT?"

    frequentbeef,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen if you haven’t seen it, the new movie makes some changes to try to tackle those elements a bit more head-on, so I’d say that should be clearer.

    But at our screening we had some random stranger lean over and exclaim “I have not idea what’s going on!” so I’ve given up all hope.

    frequentbeef,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen yeah, part 2 steers pretty headlong into “chosen one” and savior stories, though I haven’t decided if it is fully successful, it is a nice attempt with some side benefit from the changes.
