In 1997 and 1999, #SuperMarioBrosDX was praised for being a good SMB3 graphics hack for SMB1. Years later, it was criticized for being that. Since then, I've replaced a large amount of the SMB3 graphics with my own pixel art.

With the optional customization patches included in the next version, people will be able to put most of the SMB3 graphics back in if they want to.

If you end up having to repair that controller, I highly recommend the replacement flex board from Best Electronics. I was having to take mine apart and clean them before every use until I upgraded them.

The Best replacement flex boards fix the reliability issues with the controllers, thankfully.

The system really shines when a game is well suited to the controller, like Missile Command or Centipede. Unfortunately the library consists mostly of Atari 800 versions of games that were already on 2600 and play much better with a CX-40. If they'd made the CX-40 an option, I think the system would be a lot more fun

Soot reacts badly and demands a sniff if you reach towards her head, even more antsy than her brother who was super nerotic when I first got him

Did she have previous owners? She could just be a naturally skittish cat, but it could also indicate she used to get bopped on the head a lot. Or even just one time and it really stuck with her.

But yeah, some cats are just really nervous about stuff, especially if they haven't inspected it.

Compared to PC Doom or PlayStation Doom? I could especially see the latter.

On PC you can move a lot more nimbly, which makes surviving with just a pistol inherently more possible even in unfair situations.

I know Id Software is supposed to have tested every level of the originals on every difficulty to make sure a pistol start was possible. Reasonable may not have been a goal though 😅

Random, but one thing I find interesting in the world of fan game/mod/ROM hack development nowadays is that pretty much all big projects seem to be team projects now.

In the olden days there would be lots of insanely ambitious projects where one random person would try to make a whole 100 level game by themself. That seems to have mostly died out by this point.

Possible. But my personal guess is that it's because the bar for quality and scale keeps getting raised. Being somewhat better than okay at all aspects of a project doesn't amaze anymore. That's going to encourage picking a specialty in one area and handing the rest off to other specialists.

John Romero is notable for being proficient at programming, game and level design, art, AND music. But could he have made Doom all by himself?

Might have to ditch alcohol more or less completely with the new med sounds like (welbutrin) but eh, if it works, small price to pay. I get drunk like 1-2 nights a week for streams these days and that's it.

If you do still drink (not that I'm recommending you do so), it'll at least be more cost effective. It basically cut my alcohol tolerance in half when I was using it.

Well actually if life were just there wouldn't be 'games' to play. I don't get how people can think that shit is cute or acceptable.

Just read a reddit post about a woman who had been the "reserve pick" he kept putting off bc he was dating multiple "better options". And they somehow thought it was okay to say that and that she'd say yes, woof.

I hate people why would I want to date one

My favorite is the ones that drop you but then try to string you along in case the new guy doesn't work out. Kinda the same idea, but doing it to someone who's already hurt and emotionally invested.

I don't think this tradition was ever good. But even when it was normal, I don't think it would've been normal for a teacher to do it.
