Have just found out in English the sheets of pasta in lasagna are called "lasagna noodles" even though they are not noodle shaped at all. I even checked the dictionary definition of noodle which is quite specific about it not including sheets

In Dutch they are called lasagna leaves or lasagna sheets. Cause that's what they are. Cause they're not noodles. Cause they're not noodle shaped

How do you feel about this?

Edit: apparently this is an American thing not necessarily an English thing

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@fen I think this is a reasonable compromise

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@owent can go either way. It's lasagna in English and lasagne in Dutch

idly pondering how hard it would be to convert kitsune tails to an existing 16-bit console despite it being written in C# and using 64-bit float literally everywhere 🤔

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

maybe something like GBA would be a more realistic target...

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@ADisorderlyFashion probably not? but there's really no way to avoid rewriting the engine from the ground up which is the bigger problem

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@gabrielesvelto kitsune tails uses way too many advanced C# things like IEnumerable coroutines so i dont think just interpreting the CIL is a viable path

i'd probably have to write a new engine from scratch

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

mind you kitsune tails was designed for 480x270 16:9 resolution so im unconvinced it would be a great experience at 256 or 320 by 224 4:3 let alone the GBA's 240x160

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@gabrielesvelto yeah. even if i could just interpret the .NET code it was never made with the kind of efficiency you'd need to run it interpreted on a 35 year old CPU in mind >_>

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

to be clear its not really a question of "can it be done", kitsune tails in terms of design doesn't really do anything a 16-bit console can't, it's more like "how could i do this realistically without it taking multiple years of development"

maybe im overestimating the amount of work involved in recreating a game from the ground up when all the design and content creation has already been done though

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@RavenLuni jesus

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

of course my own fantasy 16-bit console has a resolution of 240x135 16:9 which is exactly half of kitsune tails' so i could theoretically make it run perfectly on that if i just

you know

reduce the size of all art in the game by half >_>;

EDIT: behold, micro yuzu!

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@justafrog tbh i could probably clean it up and make it pretty legible by just adding a couple pixels to the height

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@justafrog tbh reworking from the ground up is probably a better idea. small yumi from kitsune zero looks a lot better despite being basically the same size >_>

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@kojack yeah but on GBA i could at least have 32-bit fixed point. division wouldn't be fast but it should be fast enough given people have made entire 3D engines for GBA

Just got caught up on The Discourse of CPU design and this article: https://hackaday.com/2024/03/21/why-x86-needs-to-die/

Let me skip to the chase - it argues that x86 is shit because it's got variable-length encoding, is out-of-order, and does speculative execution. It then says ARM and RISC-V are much better.

Er... except they also do all those things in the fast chips. Which the writer clearly didn't know. So they're not just wrong, they're ignorant.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@aeva @TomF YouTube keeps suggesting a video to me lately about how x86 needs to die. Wonder if it's related

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@TomF @aeva wait so now that im marginally more lucid, the video argues that x86 doesn't need to die?

@unormal said that if your game doesn't let you drop kick people off ledges you aren't a good game designer so i just want the record to show i am a good game designer, actually
