Mastodon.social is a menace and is going to do more harm to Mastodon than good.

e33io,

@thelinuxcast what happened?

e33io,

@RL_Dane @thelinuxcast i haven't noticed any issues like that.. ..not sure i have the energy to switch instances again if it does become an issue for me

  • e33io,

@passthejoe NICE! ..full-size desktop towers are becoming less relevant as CPU efficiency is getting better and better

i'm still tinkering with #spectrwm (on #debian 12) and i think i figured out the audio volume display in the #baraction script that i want to use.. ..now on to other aspects of this config.. ..is there an elegant way to add a system tray?

    https://gitlab.com/e33io/dotfiles/-/blob/main/.config/spectrwm/baraction.sh#L6

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 how do you place it on the default bar?

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 i want to add a system tray to the default bar.. ..i've read something about trayer but i haven't dug that deep into it yet

    e33io,
    e33io,

@dekkzz76 i just want to add a section at the end that is for applet indicators for apps that display system tray icons

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 i'm not sure how to do that for apps like synology-drive-client that i need on laptops (it shows when a file is syncing and verifies it's connected)

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 not that i can find.. ..but there's other apps that i like the applet indicators for too, like remmina and vlc, so i'm gonna dig into how to setup trayer (https://github.com/sargon/trayer-srg) to see if that works with the default bar

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 makes sense, but i'm a heathen at times (haha) and can't fully break away from all proprietary software

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 i think i found a way to at least check if the synology drive client has established a connection, so i can make a conditional function to display the active/inactive state from here

    lsof -i | grep 'cloud-dri' | grep 'ESTABLISHED'

    e33io, to random

i'm working on my baraction script.. ..is using ping an expensive/excessive way to check if (and which) network interface is connected?

    https://gitlab.com/e33io/dotfiles/-/blob/5ff2e527decec573d0b336b37aa1914c2c5e550a/.config/spectrwm/baraction.sh

    e33io,

ok, i think i found a cleaner solution within ip a to check if (and which) network interface is connected..
..using grep state UP in the function seems to work (tested by physically unplugging/re-plugging the network cable)

    https://gitlab.com/e33io/dotfiles/-/blob/main/.config/spectrwm/baraction.sh#L11

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 only using on my secondary workstation at the moment, but so far it's not too bad.. ..once i dialed in some of the keybindings to control the workspaces it got a lot better

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 i think i want to figure out the default bar if i can.. ..it's kinda fun to work through the functions.. ..plus i only need workspace indicators, active window name, date/time, audio volume level and network connection status

    e33io,
    e33io, to random

i'm testing based on it having a simple plain text config.. ..for some reason when the policy kit agent window pops up (for apps that need root access), the pop-up always goes to the first workspace, not sure how to get it to pop-up on the workspace i am actively using.. ..the only other odd thing is that it doesn't have a system tray

    e33io,

@dekkzz76 it's really easy to configure and use, but i'm not sure i like the dynamic tiling.. ..i've used i3 so long that i'm used to manually tiling and having more control of the workspace layouts

    Nice, 3.18 released with Kernel 6.1 :D

Gotta do some release updating tomorrow

    https://alpinelinux.org/posts/Alpine-3.18.0-released.html

    e33io,

@kzimmermann the 6.1 LTS kernel has proven to be really great so far (from my use in debian 12)

The influx of users on reminds me of the invasion of the in the mid-90s.

Except that they're generally totally awesome, unlike the AOL/Usenet culture clash.

    Welcome, guys!! :D

If you’re using social networks to find news about the things you’re interested in (yes, that includes Mastodon), it’s time to stop and use something that was actually made for that: RSS!

So I made a quick video about this old tech, and how it’s still the absolute best way of curating what you read, watch, receive, or listen to:

    https://youtu.be/_7LTwnAaQ3k

    e33io,

@thelinuxEXP i love too.. ..i've been using @feedbin for a few years now to maintain all my feeds

So I've been using SpaceFM in a VM for a day now and it is awesome.

Unfortunately, it's abandoned. Can't really recommend it since it looks like it will never have another update.

Anyone know if someone has forked it?

    e33io,

@thelinuxcast is it still having the drag and drop crash/issue you mentioned yesterday?
