I often have to kind of laugh at the fact that I am living proof you can’t indoctrinate gender or sexuality. I was raised in an extremely religious environment. Went to church every Sunday. Bible study every Wednesday. Went to Christian schools from 1st-10th grade. Vacation Bible school. My adopted father was in Promise Keeper’s. Consumed Focus on The Family content. I wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music. Deep in purity culture. All of it.

Still came out gay, atheist, and trans lol

Honestly what all that did do is just give me a ton of things to deconstruct and unlearn. When I transferred to public school I was behind in science, history, and geography. I had to unlearn young earth creationism to pass biology. And as a kid who loved science being behind there hurt. I was raised and groomed to be in and perpetuate toxic abusive relationships focused around obedience and punishment. I had to deconstruct homophobia and sexism. The constant toxic guilt and shame.

I still say things like 25 years later that I heard Emeril Lagasse say on food network as a child. Like whenever food is resting or marinating I say it’s getting happy. I love that haha. Cooking is love and that phrase just embodies that spirit to me
