This weekend, I managed to storyboard and flesh out the main content for our next major Feature Guide on CoffeeGeek.

What has me excited about this one is it is going to be VERY pretty but also extremely feature rich. No less than 22 different major pieces of content on our website will be referenced in this new guide. Very early stages still, but I think this is going to be a popular one, once published.

As someone with a BA in History, I am a big fan of retrospective articles, like Ars Technica's recent look back at the history of the Palm Pilot.

I have long been thinking about doing similar retrospective pieces for CoffeeGeek, on subjects like consumer coffee grinders, espresso machines, auto drip makers, etc etc. I could go broad (ie, "auto drip makers") or tight focus (ie, braun auto drip coffee makers). But they do take a lot of work, research, and footnoting.

I might tackle them if there's real interest out there. Sometimes, I think it's just me who's interested in the history of coffee and espresso. Maybe I'll do a poll later about this, but if you want, reply and let me know if this kind of content is of interest to you.

Here's the Ars Technica Palm Retrospective:

New grinders in today to test, review and possibly include in our best grinders features.

Also to answer your question, the coffee grinder is by far the most important purchase if quality coffee in the home is your goal. If you spend $50, $70 on a grinder, you'll get that performance. If you spend, for example, $170 on the X-Ultra, you'll get a best in class manual grinder that puts out grind quality that rivals $500 grinders.

And if you want electric, the budget line really starts at $150 if you want decent multipurpose, and $200-$250 if you want good espresso performance included.

You might balk at those prices, but 10yr ago, that same performance started at $400-$500.

If you want to know more about the Turin SD40s, Tom at Tom's Coffee Corner reviewed it's twin, the MiiCoffee D40+, a few months ago.

Here's my first photos of the Turin SD40s

I should note, the SD40s is all metal, feels extremely solid, has a new love/hate (for me) catch cup, and just feels very high end. Even the bellows is improved over the previous SK40 / SD40.

Also how it compares to the Encore ESP

Sort of...

We really need "right to repair" laws in Canada and the USA.

And I fully blame Apple and their long pattern of "planned obsolescence" they've been on ever since they removed the ability to change batteries in their devices. That was a huge part.

Also, appliances in general have become extremely difficult and expensive to repair out of warranty. By design. This has to end. Companies won't do it, so governments have to. For everything: the environment, your wallet, and peace of mind.

But the Canadian government doesn't have the balls to do it. And the US government is bought and paid for, and will never do it. At least Europe is taking the lead here.

EDIT: Some US States have initial right to repair laws, including California. I will be surprised if the US federal govt does it, ever. Link: https://www.theverge.com/23910066/right-to-repair-law-newsom-california-sb-244

Barista Magazine (who are not in the #Fediverse, but really should be - contact them via other socials and suggest it!) continues to get into reviewing consumer coffee gear. The latest is for a hand grinder that wasn't previously on my own radar:

We don't spend enough time talking about the quality of water for your coffee and espresso at CoffeeGeek; it's my fault, because a) we have really good water in Victoria for coffee straight from the tap, and b) I have an under-the-sink commercial water filtration kit for coffee.

Well, I'm changing that. We're going to be reviewing water filtration kits designed for coffee soon. First up is BWT's innovative kits. Like this retro-grade kit for espresso machine reservoirs.

Got my hands on a Turin SK40, can anyone recommend a starting setting to start dialing in a light roast. Timemore CS3 is 7 clicks for most. Thanks in advance.

Current setting; paired up with the Profitec GO at the moment. Light to medium roasts used.

@justforfun @coffee @espresso They all seem to be calibrated differently at the factory but keep in mind the burrs need breaking in. IIRC, when I started, it was around 5ish.

Plus I've taken this grinder apart and put it together a half dozen times. Could factor into how it seats for adjustment.

I AM EXCITED. I always seem to get great news late in the evening.

1Zpresso wants our website to review all their major products, so they are sending us the latest K-Ultra, J-Ultra, and X-Ultra grinders to put through the ringer at CoffeeGeek.

In their email, they know we're tough but fair, and they fully expect their products to be put through the ringer, but also will score very highly.

Our blog contributor @natiasees is a major 1Zpresso fan, owning the J-Max grinder. I am looking forward to these tests.

New up on CoffeeGeek: our quick take and look at the new Able Brewing Black Titanium KONE filter. Great for that complete cup of coffee, and perfect for those who don't like the "metallic" taste some steel filters impart to the cup.

Really liking this scale from DiFluid.

It's the same price as the Acaia Pearl ($150) but IMO, has a lot more functionality and a way, way better (and frequently updated) app.

It's more how the scale interacts with their R2 refractometer, how it charts and has a lot of super advanced features in the app for both brewing and espresso, and little things (maybe big things?) they add like the new functionality to fairly accurately estimate the particle size of your grinds via just a photo from your smartphone.

What I like about this scale is it offers a ton of complexity, but can also just be used very simply as well.

coffeegeek, to coffee
@coffeegeek@flipboard.social avatar

This is, officially, AWESOME

DiFluid lets you visually analyse and identify the micron size of coffee grinds, using it's app, your smartphone camera, and a printable disk. And they offer it more or less free of charge (you can download and use the app at no charge, but you really should also buy their scale).

Do you KNOW the work I go through now with a Kruve sifter to check grind sizes for our reviews? It is wasteful, it takes forever, and it isn't terribly accurate either. This cannot be any less accurate, and it's WAY easier.
