A new publication from the DOERS group, a useful guide for anyone wanting to include OER work in the tenure and promotion policy at your institution.

"This book of case studies is meant to aid faculty, librarians, administrators, and staff members as they attempt to make their work or others' work on Open Educational Resources (OER) matter in the tenure, promotion, and reappointment process at their institutions." https://pressbooks.cuny.edu/tenureandpromotioncasestudies/

I love reading stories about how OER's are being used to power authentic student learning projects - where students take charge in transforming and adapting learning resources to make them more culturally relevant. And to boot those resources are then shared not via a commercial locked-in proprietary platform, but instead via an open source one Commons in a Box. https://www.aacc21stcenturycenter.org/article/using-oer-to-promote-cultural-competency-student-engagement

Oh good. The oil and gas industry is now developing curriculum for high school students in Saskatchewan. Nothing like training students for careers with a really bright future! https://ca.news.yahoo.com/sask-govt-announces-oil-gas-231034279.html

@capnpilot @marendeepwell I always recommend inexpensive things like a mic sock & stand to reduce noise & vibrations. For mics, my personal fave is the Shure SM7B. It has a rich resonant sound, but $$$$. A cheaper option I use often is my cardioid (to reduce bg noise) Audio-Technica ATR2100 that has both USB & XLR, separate headphone jack, & works well in studio or field. I also prefer over the ear headphones - mine are Audio-Technica ATH headphones that are comfortable & fold for portability.

@clintlalonde@mastodon.oeru.org avatar

@capnpilot @marendeepwell Oh and a mic shock mount is a cheap and wise investment - again to reduce the amount of noise from vibrations. But in terms of audio interfaces or separate sound cards, I haven't gone there as I don't really have the need atm. The set-up I have does the job well enough.

clintlalonde,
@clintlalonde@mastodon.oeru.org avatar

@capnpilot @marendeepwell The 440's are a good headphone, especially at the price point. I knew a few Shure aficionado's back in my radio days who swore by Shure.

I've been on a leave from work for the past 3+ months & am so immensely grateful that I was able to take the time to recuperate & recharge as my batteries had gone well beyond low.

I've looked at the time off as a retirement dry-run and am now confident that I'll be just fine come retirement.

I am also about to become the biggest advocate for work sabbaticals & long vacation breaks. No more of this one week here, one week there vacation schedule for this guy.

Human curation > algorithm. With shoutouts to 2 of my favorite online stations - Radio Paradise and Soma FM.

@carpetbomberz really this is what I do, although my algorithm isn't Spotify, it's YouTube music.

clintlalonde,
@clintlalonde@mastodon.oeru.org avatar

@sleslie I tend to take a hybrid approach & use a bit of both for new music - and by radio I don't mean the commercial stations, which are generally dreck. But the internet options and the more freeform stations & campus/community stations have always been a pretty good source of new music for me. I could totally relate to his "sad girl music" rabbit hole story as the YouTube music algorithm (which I use) took me down the same path.

clintlalonde,
@clintlalonde@mastodon.oeru.org avatar

@carpetbomberz I'm a huge fan of Tiny Desk. I've discovered a lot of new music/artists through that particular program.

There are numerous angles to this story, but my first thought is there needs to be more flexible course delivery models available for students in this situation, especially in regions like the lower mainland where rents are unaffordable for most working people let alone students.

My friend Irwin DeVries, who passed away last week, was a leader in our field of Open Learning. He was an associate faculty member with me in the School of Education at Royal Roads University, and he worked for many years at TRU Open Learning.

TRU Open Learning have set up a dedicated scholarship for Open Learning students in his memory with a goal of raising $25,000 this year to enable them to endow the fund in perpetuity.

This is the AAUP's new revised statement on online education:

https://www.aaup.org/report/statement-online-education

Why note that here? Because I'm on the Committee on Teaching, Research, and Publication and was the only person on that committee who had taught online, so I wrote the first draft.

clintlalonde,
@clintlalonde@mastodon.oeru.org avatar

@jonrees has OER always been in the statement, or is that new? Either way, it's great to see clear language about the use & creation of OER

clintlalonde,

@cogdog apropos of nothing and everything, I stuck around for the whole trailer & the next video that played was a deep fake of an Elon musk "interview" about his latest employment opportunity that guarantees I would make $271 an hour tax free. It even had the CBC News logo in the bottom left corner to convey authority and authenticity.
