I think my experiment with my Mac Mini as an HTPC is over.

I can't make the setup any simpler right now, so having a keyboard and mouse to control everything is kind of annoying.

clayknight,
@clayknight@mastodon.social avatar

@majorlinux obviously there are Linux options but even us FOSS nerds have to admit Windows Media Center was pretty freaking nice.

clayknight,
@clayknight@mastodon.social avatar

@majorlinux all fully valid options 🙂

We have a mix of devices for OTT consumption in our household, and quite honestly the clear winner here has been Google's little TV + Chromecast puck. Apple TVs are great for "it just works" type setups most of the time but dammit if they aren't getting stale as time goes on.

I'd gladly drop ship you one of Google's kit if you wanna give it a try or tinker with it, just let me know!

    @zackwhittaker update my keyboard firmware? that...that could be a little difficult.

    clayknight,
    @clayknight@mastodon.social avatar

    @zackwhittaker I am actively using this keyboard. Still. And I have two backups when this one fails. This has been my absolute favorite keyboard since I bought my first Tandy... I still have my 1000RLX! I have a hoard of others, including the Magic Keyboard you referenced in your original post... but they just collect dust lol...

    Chrome is testing Tracking Protection, a new feature that limits cross-site tracking: The next step toward phasing out third-party cookies in Chrome https://blog.google/products/chrome/privacy-sandbox-tracking-protection/ What do you think?

    clayknight,
    @clayknight@mastodon.social avatar

    @nixCraft nothing more than security theatre as a stall tactic because many enterprises still allowing chrome’s use will bin the browser when manifestV3 takes hold and adblockers become non-existent/less functional if present.

    How many is too many DNS servers for a home network of two people and circa 40 devices?

    clayknight,
    @clayknight@mastodon.social avatar

    @danieldurrans 1 is fine. You aren’t going to exceed any technical limitations. It’s a home network. If this were for an office or you were concerned about redundancy I’d absolutely say 2 in the event one goes down. Most folks just let their router act as their DNS server though at home.

    Nothing’s iMessage app was a security catastrophe, taken down in 24 hours

    Nothing promised end-to-end encryption, then stored texts publicly in plain text.

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/11/nothings-imessage-app-was-a-security-catastrophe-taken-down-in-24-hours/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

    clayknight,
    @clayknight@mastodon.social avatar

    @arstechnica am I the only one who read “Nothing promised end to end encryption” instead of “‘Nothing’ promised end to end encryption”?

    Anyone who even remotely understands iMessage, and ultimately how all of these beeper/sunbird/whatever solutions work isn’t surprised at all that oh, gee, surrendering control of an account to a third party for a hacky workaround backfires ten out of ten times.
